Special treatment for Real Madrid? RFEF extend invite to refereeing reform committee
Real Madrid have been the loudest and most virulent with their complaints about officiating in Spain, and they will get a seat at the table as reform of the system is decided. Despite facing disciplinary action for their incendiary letter to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Los Blancos appear to be mending bridges with them.
Three weeks ago it was decided that the clubs would participate with the RFEF, CTA (Referees Committee) and La Liga in deciding how to reform the refereeing system, amid consistent and widespread complaints, albeit none openly making accusations of corruption and manipulation against one club as happened with Real Madrid. It was decided by a majority vote from Primera and Segunda that Real Betis, Sevilla, Albacete and Granada would be the clubs representing their interests on the Referee Reform Committee.
This was the first step in the 'structural changes' promised by RFEF President Rafael Louzan the previous week. Real Madrid did stand for that committee, but received just four votes compared to the nine for Sevilla and twelve for Real Betis. However Marca are now reporting that Real Madrid will be present in those discussions alongside the elected representatives from Seville.
In a decision taken by the RFEF and La Liga together, and agreed by Louzan and President Javier Tebas, Real Madrid have been invited to participate in the discussions. Sevilla Femenino, Tenerife Femenino from Liga F, and Antequera and Fuenlabrada from Primera RFEF will alos be present, as will Racing Santander. The Cantabrian side have also been invited rather than elected, although no reason is given.
In the case of Real Madrid, Louzan is reportedly keen to improve dialogue with Los Blancos, and wants to extend the hand in order to improve relations. The invite was suggested while Real Madrid executives attended the Federation headquarters to discuss Jude Bellingham's red card against Osasuna.

There were some upsides to the first serious layoff of Bukayo Saka's career that enabled him to return with 'a bit more of a balanced head about football and life'. I was really positive and put in all the work I needed with my diet, in the gym, on the pitch, and the physios would say the same. I feel I've come back in a good place.' His Champions League performances against Real Madrid and Paris Saint‑Germain in particular brought reassurance at the highest level following several months on the sidelines. They also vindicated his decision to have surgery as soon as possible after tearing the hamstring against Crystal Palace on 21 December. Christmas 2024 was not the best. 'It was horrible,' Saka says. 'Normally you get more time to make a decision [about surgery] but it was Christmas and the surgeons want to be with their families so I decided on the spot that we were doing the surgery. It doesn't sound the worst thing [but] when everyone got up to go to the dining room, it took me about 10 minutes to get there.' Advertisement For the first time in more than five years as a fixed part of the Arsenal forward line, Saka was off what he describes as 'a conveyor belt of games, training games and training'. He says: 'I got to spend more time with my family and got to do more of the little things around the house that I wouldn't have even paid attention to when I was playing. On that note it was nice and I've come back with a bit more of a balanced head about football and life, and I'm trying to balance them better. It definitely helped me mentally.' Tucker the cockapoo arrived while Saka was rehabilitating from surgery. 'It was a bit tough at first because he's a puppy and I couldn't really get after him. But it was a good experience.' There was also more time for reading. One book in particular, Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment, struck a chord. 'I read nonfiction,' Saka says. 'One of the books I was given by Carlos [Cuesta, Mikel Arteta's assistant coach] was called The Power of Now. A really good book. It's about not thinking about the past, not thinking about the future, just being in the moment and always asking yourself what's necessary right now. 'Sometimes I'd think: 'Oh, am I going to come back in the best shape?' Or, in the past: 'What could I have done to prevent injury?' But all that is not necessary. It's only going to bring bad energy, negativity to your body. One of the best things I took from the book is always ask yourself: what's necessary in this moment right now? And try to live that way.' Advertisement It is a philosophy Saka intends to apply to Arsenal's attempt to win silverware next season. Watching Tottenham and Chelsea win European trophies last month hurt. 'Of course, naturally, because you want that to be you.' On Arsenal's campaign, Saka says: 'I was not happy with last season, how it went, how it ended. But the only thing I can do now is look forward and try to be the best version of myself and help my teammates be the same.'

Incoming Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso is planning to make use of the talents of Arda Güler in a deeper role next season and beyond. That's according to Diario AS, who have on Monday provided an insight into the situation. This comes with Los Blancos having tied up a deal for River Plate sensation Franco Mastantuono. Brazil could reach World Cup with a win on Ancelotti's home debut; Ecuador also close
SAO PAULO (AP) — Two more South American teams could qualify for the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday. Second-placed Ecuador will do it by winning in Peru. Fourth-placed Brazil or third-placed Paraguay could secure a berth with a win in Sao Paulo as long as Venezuela loses at Uruguay. The most anticipated match of the round is in Sao Paulo, where Carlo Ancelotti will make his home debut as Brazil coach. The host, which drew Ecuador 0-0 last Thursday, is two points behind Paraguay. Only World Cup champion Argentina has qualified from South America. Lionel Messi's team takes on Colombia in Buenos Aires in a match in which coach Lionel Scaloni will continue deepening his squad. The two final rounds of South American qualifying are in September. The top six teams earn direct spots for the World Cup next year in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
