We humans are a messy bunch. Where we dwell, there accumulates evidence of our nesting. We have fossilized garbage piles dating back more than 100,000 years. It's a whole thing.
Putting aside its potential for harm, anthropogenic pollution can be a useful archaeological tool. We can see when people started using certain technologies, and trace the evolution of culture based on the unthinking imprint left behind thousands of years after the people who made it.
It's in such traces that archaeologists from Germany and Greece have now found the oldest known evidence of lead pollution from human activity – and even linked its rise to the emergence and establishment of advanced monetized society in ancient Greece.
"Because lead was released during the production of silver, among other things, proof of increasing lead concentrations in the environment is, at the same time, an important indicator of socioeconomic change," says paleoscientist Andreas Koutsodendris of Heidelberg University in Germany.
Lead as a byproduct of human activity first emerges in the archaeological record at around the time we started to produce silver via smelting and refining of lead ores around 5,000 years ago. It can be found in ancient human teeth and bones; and, later, in environmental samples preserved in archaeological layers, concurrent with the emergence of coins about 2,500 years ago.
To study the trajectory of lead pollution in ancient Greece, Koutsodendris and his team made a study of the bottom of the Aegean Sea and its coastline. The team used an excavator to carefully extract a long, vertical section of the seafloor, which provided layers of material deposited in sequence over millennia.
These layers can be dated and analyzed for clues to determine what was falling onto the seafloor at any given epoch. Koutsodendris's team looked not just for signs of pollution, but also for pollen – a tracer for agricultural activity that reveals a broader picture of the human society inhabiting the region.
Their analysis of the core samples revealed the oldest anthropogenic lead pollution to date, coinciding with layers deposited around 5,275 years ago. This is about 1,200 years older than the previously earliest known anthropogenic lead pollution of the environment, and coincides with the advent of the Bronze Age in the region.
Curiously, the researchers detected no signs of lead pollution in layers associated with the entirety of the Bronze Age itself. But then they found a dramatic uptick around 2,225 years ago – not long after a similar rise was detected in Ancient Roman skeletons.
"The changes coincide with the conquest of Hellenistic Greece by the Romans, who subsequently claimed for themselves the region's wealth of resources," explains archaeologist Joseph Maran of Heidelberg University.
Meanwhile, changes in pollen identified shifts in economy as Ancient Greece transitioned from a largely pastoral society to one that was increasingly monetized. This transition seems to have had a profound impact on the environment, marked by widespread deforestation, agricultural expansion, and a significant increase in environmental heavy metal deposition.
This was because the Ancient Romans pushed mining and smelting of metals like silver, gold, and lead itself, which lined Roman plumbing. Such activity not only leached lead into the environment, but required an increase in production of wood to fuel smelting facilities, in addition to land clearing for agricultural purposes.
"The incorporation of Greek regions into the Roman political sphere provided the new rulers with the opportunity to benefit from the natural resources of the recently acquired provinces," the researchers write, "which led to an unprecedented increase in the exploitation of Greek mining districts in order to extract gold, silver, and other metal resources."
And probably a rise in lead poisoning for the poor Ancient Greeks, to boot.
The research has been published in Communications Earth & Environment.

The ruins of the ancient Minoan Palace at Knossos, Crete A stone's throw from Heraklion's ancient city walls, a modern-day McDonald's stands at the crossroads of a busy urban thoroughfare here on the Greek island of Crete. Four thousand years ago, however, Crete was also a crossroads dominated by a mysterious and largely still poorly understood Bronze Age culture that predated classical Greece. For those familiar with Star Trek: The Next Generation, it's hard not to compare Crete's ancient Minoans with the Ferengi, the fictional 24th century traders so savvy in dealing across space, time and civilizations. Not only were the Minoans adept at trade, but they were likely well ahead of their time when it came to celestial navigation. It's even arguable that their celestial prowess paved the way for the same sort of stellar navigation still in use at sea and now even in space. According to at least one researcher, the Minoans were using stellar navigation to trade with partners via all four cardinal points of the compass. I hypothesize that the Minoans employed a form of sidereal navigation similar to traditional Polynesian techniques—using star paths as directional guides across the sea, Alessandro Berio, an independent archeoastronomer, who holds a masters in cultural astronomy from the University of Wales in the U.K., told me via email. This is supported by archeoastronomical evidence of Minoan palatial alignments toward the rising or setting points of key stars, corresponding to trade routes to major Bronze Age port cities across the eastern Mediterranean, he says. In a new paper that Berio is preparing for journal submission, he argues that his most significant finding is the proposition that Arcturus—one of the brightest stars in the northern hemisphere—may have served as a primary navigational anchor in a Bronze Age sidereal system. That is, one that linked some of the most important cultural and political centers of the Aegean and the Mediterranean. I argue that the palace of Malia—one of Crete's major Minoan complexes—had a deliberate alignment with the rising of Arcturus, guiding seafarers along a star path toward Miletus, the principal Minoan outpost on Asia Minor's Anatolian coast, says Berio. Arcturus, the fourth brightest star in the night sky is an aging red giant only 36.6 light years away. It's also the brightest star in the northern constellation of Bootes, a constellation known to be used for navigation by the ancient Greeks. Berio wonders whether Arcturus functioned as a celestial beacon across multiple cultural spheres—Minoan, Mycenaean, and Egyptian. In a 2022 paper published in the journal Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry, Berio argued that the Minoans aligned their palaces with the stars Spica, Castor, Betelgeuse, Markab and even Sirius to navigate on imaginary lines to all points around the Mediterranean, including the Greek mainland, Asia Minor, Cyprus, the northeastern Nile delta, and even further west along North Africa. The Minoans were cosmopolitan people who traveled across the Mediterranean exporting olive oil, wine, cereals, textiles, and leather goods while importing precious materials like gold, silver, and ivory, Kostis Christakis, an archeologist and director of the Knossos Research Center of the British school at Athens, told me in his office on Crete. The Minoans knew how to trade and produced various goods for the Egyptian, Levantine, and Cypriot markets, Sue Sherratt, an archeologist at the University of Sheffield in the U.K., told me via email. In the Early and Middle Bronze Ages silver from further north in the Aegean destined for the east may have been channeled through Crete, she says. How did the Minoans use celestial navigation? Similar to traditional Polynesian and Micronesian navigators, the Minoans may have mapped the rising and setting of stars to specific angles on the horizon, says Berio. By following these 'star paths'—linear constellations rising at known azimuths—and combining this with seasonal knowledge of winds and currents, they could reliably sail to distant ports across the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean and expand their trade network, he says. Berio used OpenCPN, an open-source software, to plot likely Minoan navigation routes between two distant points. The correct altitude at which a star was visible on the horizon he determined by using Stellarium, a free software planetarium, as noted in his new paper. To mimic the naked eye observations of the Minoans, Berio limited the stars he plotted to only a magnitude of six. To achieve this kind of navigational accuracy, the Minoans would have needed to calculate course angles across hundreds of kilometers of open sea; we don't know how they did it, says Berio. The possibility exists that they developed some form of proto-coordinate system, perhaps using celestial zenith stars for latitude, and/or comparing simultaneous lunar and solar eclipses for longitude, he says. They likely first arrived on Crete from what is today southwest Anatolia in Asia Minor. Even though this civilization has been dubbed Minoan, in truth, no one knows what they called themselves, much less what they called the island of Crete. Yet the center of their society was clearly their palaces. Used over six centuries from roughly 2000 B.C. until 1450 B.C., the Minoan palaces were the main administrative, economic, religious and ideological centers of Crete, says Christakis. Standing atop the ruins of the palace at Knossos, I'm surrounded by semi-arid, wooded mountains that envelop this complicated maze. It's hard to imagine what it must have looked like in its full glory, but clearly this was a very sophisticated civilization that predated classical Greece by some five hundred years. On the muggy afternoon I was there, a real-life peacock perched on a much-degraded stone wall seemed to perfectly fit this place in time. My first thought was that great ancestors of this peafowl must have paraded their plumage when the palace itself was in all its splendor; delighting the residents with their haunting calls. The upper echelons of their society, at least, seem to live in high style. As for their celestial prowess? The biggest enigma is whether we're seeing evidence of lost mathematical knowledge, or a navigational system so embodied in ritual, architecture, and oral memory that it never needed to be written down, says Berio. What puzzles me most is how the Minoans could have measured the angle of a sea route between two distant locations with such precision — especially without known instruments or a documented system of trigonometry, he says. A devastating infestation of microbugs is damaging the treasured underground frescoes that decorate the labyrinths of ancient catacombs beneath Rome. A vast network of tunnels, dug into the soft, porous tufa rock that underlies much of the city, was created in the early Christian era for the burial of the dead. They were also used as clandestine meeting places at a time when Christians were persecuted by Rome's emperors. But the colourful frescoes that adorn the ceilings and walls of the catacombs are being eaten away by microorganisms, a phenomenon that experts say is being accelerated by climate change. Rising temperatures have increased humidity levels inside the underground burial sites, encouraging the growth of bacteria, moss and fungus. The alarm about the rampant art-eating fungus has been raised by a Vatican department, the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology. 'The survival of frescoes which were created 2,000 years ago is at risk,' said Monsignor Pasquale Iacobone, the head of the department. 'There is an increase in the proliferation of vegetation and the damage is unprecedented. It's the effect of climate change and the increase in outside temperatures.' Ancient Romans, who cremated their dead, banned Christians from burying corpses within the walls of the capital. So the Christians instead dug underground passageways for the interment of their dead, eventually excavating around 300kms of tunnels beneath Rome. They wrapped the dead in shrouds and laid them to rest in rectangular niches that were carved out of the tunnel walls. Among the treasures under threat are striking frescoes in the San Callisto Catacomb, which mark some of the earliest surviving examples of Christian art. San Callisto, the biggest and most famous of Rome's catacombs, was established in the second century AD and contained the remains of about half a million people, as well as seven popes who were martyred in the third century AD. 'Along with the six catacombs that are open to the public, the problem is affecting all 400 of the decorated chambers that exist in Rome's 60 catacombs. We are seeing an unexpected increase in biological infestations,' Barbara Mazzei, an archaeologist and an expert on the catacombs, told Corriere della Sera newspaper. While the problem underground is high humidity, the issue above ground is a lack of moisture – high temperatures and drought conditions mean that trees are sinking their roots deeper, breaking through the ceilings of the catacombs and penetrating the frescoes. The confined, subterranean nature of catacombs and the lack of ventilation mean that it is hard for experts to use chemicals such as biocides to combat the growth of bacteria and mould. Instead, they are experimenting with natural products that are not harmful to humans, including essential oils made from lavender, thyme and cinnamon. The threats faced by the catacombs were revealed at a seminar in Rome organised by the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Many of the catacombs lie beneath the Appian Way, the 'regina viarum' or 'queen of roads' that once ran from Rome to the distant port of Brindisi on the Adriatic coast. In 2010, the earliest known icons of four of Christ's apostles were discovered on the ceiling of an elaborately decorated chamber in a catacomb beneath the streets of Rome. Scientists used advanced laser technology to remove a hardened crust of dirt and calcium deposits in order to bring to light the brightly coloured fourth century paintings of Saints John, Paul, Andrew and Peter. The images adorn the ceiling of a vault, carved out of volcanic rock, which provided the last resting place of a rich Roman noblewoman who converted to Christianity. Archaeologists also found an early image of Christ, a painting of a naked Daniel with lions at his feet and a sketch of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. The catacombs of Santa Tecla, a labyrinth of tunnels, galleries and burial chambers, lie hidden beneath a five-storey office in Ostiense, a residential area of Rome. The camp was located within the forested Veluwe in the Netherlands, near Hoog Buurlo, about 15 miles north of the Rhine, long considered the empire's northernmost border in the area. 'What makes this find so remarkable is that the camp lies beyond the northern frontier of the Roman Empire,' Saskia Stevens, Utrecht University associate professor and researcher, said in a statement. As part of the Constructing the Limes project undertaking by Utrecht University staff and students at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Amsterdam Center for Ancient Studies and Archaeology, and Radbound University Nijmegen, researchers aim to explore the functioning of Roman borders that ran through the Netherlands and western Germany. The newly discovered 22-acre camp features a ditch, a 10-foot-wide defensive rampart, and several entrances. The team believes it was a temporary marching camp, used to shelter troops for no more than a few days to weeks as they moved to new camps. They posit it was a stopover between Hoog Buurlo and Ermelo-Leuvenum, a day's march away. 'Only four such temporary Roman camps are known in the Netherlands,' Stevens said, though dozens have been found in Germany and hundreds in Britain. 'We are particularly interested in these kinds of camps because they provide valuable insights into Roman military presence and operations in frontier regions. They help us understand the routes taken by Roman troops and show how the Romans made extensive use of territories beyond the formal boundaries of their empire.' Finding the camp at Veluwe required LiDAR technology. Coupled with aerial photographs, researchers were able to see subtle variations in the landscape heights. That launched field work that included metal detectors and three different trench examinations at a site owned by the Dutch Forestry Commission, which has ensured it has remained largely preserved. Since the team didn't come away with a bounty of artifacts during the on-the-ground search, Stevens said it is difficult to precisely date the site, although the traces of remnants left suggest the camp is from the second century A.D. 'The feeling of bringing tangible evidence from the past to light was an unforgettable experience for all of us,' student Sabine Boschma wrote in a translated statement. 'With this find, we contribute to the further reconstruction of the Roman Limes and the way in which this history still plays a role in our contemporary landscape.'
