Oscars 2025 winners: Two Welsh nominees take home awards
Two out of three Welsh Oscar nominees have taken home awards in the 2025 Academy Awards. Cinematographer Lol Crawley, who grew up in Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, Powys, won best cinematography for The Brutalist at the 97th edition of the Oscars.Meanwhile special effects artist Rhys Salcombe, from Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, was part of a team that won the best visual effects Oscar for work on Dune: Part Two.In his acceptance speech, Crawley thanked "all my friends back in Wales" and said he had huge affection for the country.
Crawley told BBC News Breakfast it was "extraordinary" and "overwhelming" to hear his name read out when the winner was announced.Asked what it meant for Wales, he said he was "very, very proud". "It doesn't seem that long since I was there, to be honest, and I have a huge affection for that country," he said.Crawley finished audio visual studies at college in Wrexham, followed by media production at university, before moving to Los Angeles in 2019.
Crawley, who was born in Shrewsbury and grew up in Powys, loved watching films with his father.Asked about the film's much-discussed 15-minute intermission, he said he recalled going to the nearest cinema as a child on the Welsh-English border to see BMX Bandits which had an intermission, allowing him to buy an ice cream.The Brutalist, which was nominated for 10 Oscars and won three, tells the story of Hungarian immigrant and Holocaust survivor László Tóth, who is trying to rebuild his life in post-war America through his work as an architect.Trevor Matthews, son of business magnate and Celtic Manor Resort owner Sir Terry Matthews, was among four producers of The Brutalist who missed out on the best picture award.Independent film Anora won five awards including best picture and best actress.

Pembroke Dock variety show in aid of Homeless Pembrokeshire
Peter Kraus of Pembroke Dock is hoping that at least £1,000 will be raised for the event to help the registered charity, which offers crisis support, advice and emergency rough sleeping packs to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. 'It's horrifying to think how many people in Pembrokeshire are homeless, with some living in cars and tents,' said Peter, who has asked for donations to Homeless Pembrokeshire to mark his birthday.. 'I just wanted to do something to help.' The show - billed as 'a night of wonderful entertainment' will take place at The Cricketers, Imble Lane, Pembroke Dock on Friday June 13, with doors open at 7pm. These will include a weekend stay in Kiln Park, Tenby, donated by Bodessa Holidays; tickets for Parc y Scarlets and vouchers for food, beauty treatments and attractions including Heatherton and Folly Farm. However, one question saw an incredible 30 people eliminated in one fell swoop. Presenter Lee asked: "Have a look at this picture. Are there more happy faces or sad faces?" The players were then shown 18 emoji faces arranged in three rows of six. Once the time limit was up, Lee revealed 30 people had answered incorrectly and were therefore out. The right answer turned out to be "happy" - as there were 10 happy faces and eight sad ones. With his trademark quick wit, Lee quipped: "Well, there's 30 sad ones now!" It's not the first time a single question on The 1% Club caught out several people. In a different episode, a savage limerick question took out 14 contestants, The poetic puzzle asked: "Jamil is writing a limerick but needs a word that follows these rules to complete the last line... The 1% Club players stumped on tricky maths question as 13 players pass - but could you have got it right- "Two syllables, only two different vowels, starts with an even -numbered letter and contains at least three letters from the second half of the alphabet. Which of these words would work?" The options were: Doggie, Blades, Hotel, Prizes and Rabbit. The remaining players faces looked puzzled as they tried to figure out the answer within the 30 seconds. Lee then revealed the right answer was Prizes - after 14 people had been knocked out. The episode also saw an 'easy' common sense riddle knock out 23 people earlier on in the show. The answer was the word 'be', as a different writing hand would not change the last word, something which many viewers playing along got correct. The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and ITVX.

Brynmawr food festival is taking place next weekend
The Brynmawr Town Centre Food Festival is returning next weekend on Saturday, June 14. The event is running from 10am to 5pm and promises to have something for everyone. Visitors can indulge in a wide range of offerings from food and drink vendors, serving delicious eats and refreshing beverages. With both sweet and savoury options and tonnes of stalls what's not to love? At the event popular Welsh businesses and local businesses will be on show. Visitors can also take advantage of a free park and ride service at Brynmawr Foundation School, ensuring easy access to the town centre. Live music performances will also be ongoing throughout the day creating a lively atmosphere. Attendees can look forward to performances by The Kiltics, Laura Jasmin, and The Valli Boys. Community radio presenters BGFM who will be hosting the event which will include interactive radio style games for the community to partake in. Food on show at Brynmawr Food Festival (Image: NQ) Alongside this entertainment including face painters, a rodeo bull, and a bouncy castle will also be at the event. Can you imagine falling of a rodeo bull on a full stomach we are sure someone will have that experience next Saturday! The event has been organised by Blaenau Gwent council and funded through the Welsh Government. Local author Kiersten Ward, author of Mindful Monster, will also be signing books at the food festival. With over 20,000 copies sold in just over six months, Kiersten's books are reaching families across the UK. These vibrant and relatable stories explore common feelings and worries in a playful, accessible way, helping children understand and express their emotions. Councillor John Morgan, cabinet member for economy and place, said: "The Brynmawr Town Centre Food Festival is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the diverse culinary talents we have here in Blaenau Gwent. "I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the day." With hundreds of people expected to attend the event the day looks like a very popular day out!
