Halifax police continue to investigate 2009 murder of Tanya Jean Brooks
Halifax police are continuing to investigate the murder of Tanya Jean Brooks, 16 years after her death.
Brooks's body was found beside the former St. Patrick's-Alexandra School on Maitland Street the afternoon of May 11, 2009.
Investigators were able to trace her movements up until 9 p.m. the night before.
Police say they believe the 36-year-old Brooks knew her assailant or assailants and that someone may have information that could help solver her murder. They ask anyone who witnessed anything in the area of the school between 9 p.m. on May 10 and 2:20 p.m. on May 11, 2009 to contact police at 902-490-5020.
Brooks' case is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers cash rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible in certain cases.
'Callers must contact the Rewards Program at 1-888-710-9090, must provide their name and contact information, and may be called to testify in court. All calls will be recorded. The amount of the award will be based on the investigative value of the information provided,' reads a news release from the Halifax Regional Police.

Body of suspected homicide victim Miguel Mack located, family says

The discovery of Miguel Mack's remains also comes one year after investigators revealed they believe the young man was the victim of a homicide. The update was shared late Monday night by Elijah Mack-Stirling, the deceased's brother. 'This is not the outcome any of us had hoped for,' Mack-Stirling wrote on social media. 'Please keep our family in your thoughts as we navigate this unimaginable loss.' The RCMP's Southeast District Major Crime Unit has not confirmed the discovery of Mack's body, but told CTV News it would be providing an update on the case soon. Mack was last seen alive on Feb. 27, 2023, and his family reported him missing days later. A large-scale search was launched in the Merritt area involving volunteers, police dogs and drones, but turned up no sign of the missing man. On the first anniversary of his disappearance, RCMP said they believe Mack met with foul play.

Former Edmonton police officer charged with breach of trust

A former Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer is facing charges for unlawfully sharing confidential and investigative information to media outlets. Staff Sergeant William (Bill) Clark was charged with breach of trust on Tuesday, EPS said in a news release. The investigation has oversight from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) and was reviewed by the Alberta Crown Prosecution Services in Calgary to determine if charges were warranted, EPS said. With the case before the courts, EPS says it can't provide additional information during the investigation. Clark was a member of EPS for 44 years and retired in May 2024.

Authorities asked the public Tuesday for help finding Travis Decker, 32, who is wanted for three counts of murder and kidnapping, according to police in Wenatchee, about 100 miles (160 kilometres) east of Seattle. Police said it was unknown whether Decker, a former Army soldier with 'extensive training,' was armed. On Friday the mother of the girls, ages 9, 8 and 5, reported that their father did not return them after a planned visit, police said. Over the weekend authorities looked for the children and for Decker, who was believed to be living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup with Washington plates. Decker's unoccupied truck was found Monday near a campground, police said, and officers found the girls' bodies during a search. Anyone who may have seen Decker since Friday or knows his current location was asked to call 911. 'Due to safety concerns do not attempt to contact or approach Decker,' police said. The Wenatchee School District said the girls were students of Lincoln Elementary. Counseling services were available, and the district asked people to respect the privacy of students, staff members and families and come to the campus only for regular school business. It was not known how long the girls were with Decker before their mother contacted police, according to Capt. Brian Chance. 'What prompted her to call us was that ... he was late returning the girls and had not communicated to her that he was going to be late, which was his typical fashion and so this was out of the ordinary,' Chance said. Decker and the girls' mother are divorced, Chance said. He did not have details on how the girls were killed or on Decker's employment. In addition to living out of his truck, Decker is known to occasionally stay in motels, Chance said. Chelan County Sheriff's Office, which found the truck, was leading the search in the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest area while other teams followed up on 'potential credible information and tips' regarding Decker's location, the agency said in a statement.
