
New Fish and Wildlife campaign urges Californians to "Save a swamp, Sauté a Nutria"
SACRAMENTO – It's National Invasive Species Awareness Week and the US Fish and Wildlife Service wants people to know that nutria can be delicious.
The large, semi-aquatic rodent is considered an invasive species along the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Originally brought to the US from South America for fur, wildlife officials say the large rodent is destroying marshland.
In California, wildland managers have been raising concerns over nutria for years – warning that the giant rodent poses not only a threat to natural habitats but also to levees critical to agriculture.
Noting that eating invasive species is one way people can help protect native wildlife, Fish and Wildlife started a new campaign for this National Invasive Species Awareness Week by highlighting a number of pests that can make for a nice meal.
With its meat being lean, mild, and similar to rabbit, wildlife officials say nutria would make for a mean gumbo.
According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, nutria are considered a nongame animal and thus can be taken at any time by any legal means by property owners. However, officials also warn that care should be taken so that nutria isn't mistaken for other similar animals like native beavers and muskrats.
Other invasive species highlighted as possible menu items by Fish and Wildlife include the Northern Snakehead, the Green Iguana, Invasive Cap, and Feral Hogs.

There are numerous species of plants in the U.S. that can be found in Louisiana that are poisonous, or contain substances that produce allergic reactions of the skin. Many plants that are commonly found in Louisiana can cause allergic reactions of the skin or are harmful to ingest and, in order to avoid these plants, it's important to know what to look out for. Poison hemlock is an invasive plant in North America that is native to Europe, Africa and Asia. Poison hemlock can be found in Louisiana, and all parts of this plant are highly poisonous to people and animals, as ingesting even small amounts of this plant may result in death. The plant typically measures three to eight feet tall and has stems that are hairless and hollow with ridges and purple spots, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Spotted water hemlock is a widespread, native plant to North America that can be found in Louisiana, and it's often called the most deadly plant in North America. All parts of this plant are highly toxic to humans and animals, and ingestion may cause abdominal pain, convulsions, delirium, nausea, seizures and vomiting, often resulting in death. The plant usually measures three to six feet tall and has stems that are smooth and hollow, with stems varying in color and pattern, from solid green or purple to green with purple spots or stripes, says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Poison oak is distinguished by leaves that have three leaflets, like poison ivy, with rounded tips, and the undersides of the leaves are fuzzy and lighter in color than the top. Poison oak contains an oil called urushiol, which causes an allergic reaction in most people when it comes into contact with skin. Poison oak rashes are characterized by redness, itching, swelling and sometimes blisters, according to Cleveland Clinic. Poison ivy is a common poisonous plant that also contains urushiol, which causes an irritating, itchy allergic reaction when you touch the plant or an object that's been in contact with the plant's urushiol oil. Poison Ivy is characterized by each leaf containing three leaflets, and there is a popular saying that goes, "leaves of three, let them be," says Cleveland Clinic. Wild parsnip is an invasive plant that's native to Asia and Europe, but it can be found in Louisiana. This plant usually measures two to five feet tall and has stems that are hairless and grooves. Coming into contact with wild parsnip may cause skin irritation, blistering rashes and skin discoloration, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Queen Anne's lace is an invasive plant native to Asia and Europe that can be found in Louisiana. While some may not experience any negative reactions, those with sensitive skin that come into contact with Queen Anne's lace may experience skin irritation. This plant usually measures one to two feet tall and sometimes has a small reddish flower in the center, and its stems are fuzzy with small grooves, says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Poison sumac thrives in wet, swampy regions in the Northeast, Midwest and parts of the Southeast U.S. Leaves of a poison sumac plant have clusters of seven to 13 smooth leaflets arranged in pairs, and a full-grown poison sumac tree can reach up to 20 feet tall. This plant also contains urushiol oil, which causes severe skin inflammation and dermatitis, according to LSU AgCenter. Leadwort is a shrub that thrives in the climate of the Southeastern U.S. and it can be found in Louisiana. This plant has shiny green leaves and blue flowers that bloom from spring until fall, and turn a deep shade of red over the winter. Coming into contact with this plant can cause blisters to develop, says Healthline. Stinging nettle is found throughout the U.S., including in Louisiana, and often grows in dense patches near streams, in ditches, along hiking trails, and on farmland. This plant has singular stems with green or purple branches that grow up to eight feet, with dark green leaves that have a pointed tip and are two to four inches long. The plant's branches and leaves can have stinging hairs, that feel like a sharp sting and produce a burning or itching sensation and hives that can last for up to 24 hours, according to Healthline. Poachers hunting rare ‘ghost' flowers, near extinction
(WJW) — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fears if action isn't taken, the rare ghost orchid could soon be extinct. The FWS is now proposing to list the swamp-dwelling plant as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. It is described as a leafless plant that attaches itself by its roots high up on trees, making its white blossoms appear to hover in the air and look ghost-like. 'It is one of the most famous flowers in Florida, but its population has declined to fewer than 1,000 plants in the United States. Less than half of those are mature enough to reproduce,' warned the FWS in a press release. Ground beef sold nationwide possibly contaminated with E. Coli Experts report the plant is at risk of extinction due to multiple threats, including habitat loss and habitat degradation. However, poaching is its biggest threat. Mexican gray wolf Asha gives birth to litter of pups
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Asha, a Mexican gray wolf caught wandering around New Mexico in 2023, gave birth to her first litter in mid-May, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced. Asha (wolf F2754) and her mate (wolf M1966) welcomed five Mexican wolf pups. She came to fame as a wandering wolf, making multiple trips outside the Mexican wolf recovery area. Asha was captured and paired with her mate at the Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility in New Mexico in December 2023 — a decision that some environmentalists disagreed with, saying it would have been better for the wolves to roam. 'Asha' the Mexican grey wolf featured in children's book The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said there are plans in place to release the full pack onto private land in New Mexico this summer. The announcement of Asha's litter came just days before the Arizona Game and Fish Department reported that the Mexican wolf fostering efforts for 2025 wrapped up. A total of 17 wolf pups were placed into wild dens across New Mexico and Arizona, six of which were fostered into a single den in Arizona and 11 into three different dens in New Mexico. 'The fostering program is achieving these goals faster than was predicted, with 21 of the 22 required fosters having reached breeding age,' Clay Crowder, assistant director with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, said in part in a news release. 'Also of note from the foster program is that we now have at least 13 fosters having produced 31 litters, all of which are important to contributing to the genetic health of the wild population. With these successes, we are approaching the criteria to begin evaluating potential downlisting of Mexican wolves.' The Mexican wolf is listed as endangered, and efforts to grow the population have been ongoing since 1998 in the two southwestern states. A 2024 population survey revealed a minimum of 286 Mexican wolves were distributed across New Mexico and Arizona. Fostering Mexican wolf pups from captivity into the wild helps manage the genetic diversity of the wild population and allows the pups to learn how to live successfully in the wild from an experienced pack, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Since 2016, a total of 146 fostered pups have been introduced into wild dens The goal for 2025 was to place a larger number of pups into dens in Arizona, which was relatively successful, with twice as many pups going to Arizona compared to last year, the Arizona Game and Fish Department said in the news release.
