
The God Squad: Forgiving the DC shooter
How strange and chilling it is that my introduction last week of the issue of unconditional forgiveness this week has a tragic echo in the news of the brutal murder of two staff members of the Israeli Embassy in Washington – Sarah Milgrim, 26, and Yaron Lischinsky, 30, who were attending an American Jewish Committee event on Middle East cooperation.
I brought up the issue of unconditional forgiveness as a remembrance and tribute to Father Tom who believed deeply in it as a foundational belief of Christianity. I would push back at him with the contrary Jewish belief that only repentant sinners need to be forgiven. Now we have a bloody and agonizing test case for what had been just an abstract and theoretical topic. Now we have the issue before our souls. Do we have a spiritual obligation to forgive that clearly unrepentant murderer who was dragged away screaming his hateful antisemitic slogans?
Not only can I not forgive him, I want his soul to rot in hell, and this has nothing to do with the fact that I am a rabbi and he killed Jews. I felt the same thing after the 2015 murder of nine Christians at a church Bible study group at the Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, S.C. and yet the families of those victims found it in their hearts to forgive that predator. Tommy admired them. I was bewildered by them. What does it mean, I must ask, to forgive someone who was happy to murder? Doesn't it mean on some level that you are forgiving not just the murderer but also the murder? How can one forgive the killer without also forgiving the killing? I just cannot fathom what it means to forgive someone who luxuriates in their sin. That is where I am at. That is what my faith teaches.
However…
Interfaith dialogue of the type that forged my friendship with Father Tom requires that you remain open to the possibility that you are wrong or at the very least open to the possibility that viewing things from another perspective might bring you a wisdom that has eluded you in your inherited teachings and could nourish you in your future spiritual growth.
So I can say that I am open to at least considering what it would mean to transform vengeance into love? I am open to the argument that unconditional forgiveness deprives the sinner of exactly what he or she wants most and that is to crush your spirit and poison your soul? Seen in that way, forgiveness becomes the best revenge. The forgiveness allows you to swim in the waves of the world without also trying to hold onto a heavy rock of anger, hatred and vengeance that will surely pull you down under the waves unless and until you just let it go.
Where do you stand, my dear readers, on this bloody dilemma?
Like so many of you, a reader named J wrote to me with her eloquent beliefs about unconditional forgiveness:
Dear Rabbi Marc, with regard to your piece On unconditional forgiveness, I shall quote a saying that's on my refrigerator door. 'Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could be any different.' I'm on the side of the repentant with a look toward the future where perhaps one would sin no more. As imperfect human beings, that probably won't happen but my prayers are always full of hope!
Well said. God bless you, dear J. As for me and as for now, I am willing to consider the possibility that such unconditional forgiveness might be an aspirational value. That is, it might be a belief you could hope to embrace someday, even if you are unable to embrace it now. That is as close as I can get to Tommy's saintly love.
However, now I am furious and frightened at the rise of antisemitism in our world, our universities and our culture. I am consumed by trying to figure out how our country can find a balance between free speech that must be protected and hate speech that must be contained and confronted. Wiser minds than mine must put an end to this.
I want to be able to enter a classroom or a synagogue or a meeting hall without having to first encounter an armed guard. I want to be able to write back to the college kids from my synagogue who wrote to me during some campus demonstrations, 'Rabbi Gellman, should I wear my Jewish star necklace in public?' I want to write back to them, despite my fears for their safety, 'YES. Wear your Star of David and wear it with pride!'
While we debate forgiveness let us find a way to live together in peace.

Hamas to release 10 alive hostages in response to U.S. cease-fire plan

File photo by Mohammed Saber/ EPA-EFE May 31 (UPI) -- Militant Hamas said Saturday it would release 10 living hostages and 18 bodies in return for Israel's release of Palestinian prisoners and ending the war that began in October 2023. Steve Witkoff, who is President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, on Thursday submitted his proposal to mediators from Qatar and Egypt. "As part of this agreement, 10 living Israeli prisoners held by the resistance will be released, in addition to the return of eighteen bodies, in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners," Hamas said in a statement obtained by CNN. The group said it came to the decision "after conducting a round of national consultations." "This proposal aims to achieve a permanent cease-fire, a comprehensive withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and ensure the flow of aid to our people and our families in the Gaza Strip," Hamas said in a statement also obtained by The Guardian. The Hamas response is similar to an earlier proposal to release 10 hostages, as well as a number of hostages' remains during the cease-fire in exchange for 1,100 Palestinian prisoners. An unidentified Israeli official told Israeli reporters in Saturday that they are treating Hamas' response as an "effective rejection." Fifty-eight hostages are believed to still be alive. A total of 146 Israeli hostages have been freed or rescued from Gaza, including 25 during the truce. The U.S. proposal called for a 60-day pause in fighting and renewed efforts toward long-term peace, as well as guarantees from Israel that it will not resume its offensive after Hamas releases hostages. Negotiations toward a permanent ceasefire would begin immediately on the first day of the 60-day truce, according to the proposal. Israeli negotiators accepted the deal, but Hamas has not backed it. On Thursday, Hamas official Basem Naim said the U.S. proposal "does not respond to any of our people's demands," including lifting the humanitarian blockade on the Gaza Strip that has led to famine-like conditions among 2 million. Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz on Friday threatened Hamas if it did not accept. "The Hamas murderers will now be forced to choose: accept the terms of the 'Witkoff deal' for the release of the hostages -- or be annihilated," Katz said. A cease-fire lasted from Jan. 19 to March 1. Israel refused to move to a planned second phase that could have led to a permanent end to the war. Israel began fighting, including airstrikes. In a ramped-up offensive, at least 60 people have been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza over the last 24 hours, Hamas-run health officials said. And 72 were killed on Thursday. Negotiators have made little progress. "Negotiations are ongoing on the current proposal," Qatar's ambassador to the United Nations, Ayla Ahmed Saif al-Thani said Friday. He noted the mediators from Qatar are "very determined to find an ending to the horrific situation in Gaza." For three months, Israel's blockade has stopped virtually all humanitarian aid into Gaza. "After nearly 80 days of a total blockade, communities are starving - and they are no longer willing to watch food pass them by," the World Food Program said on Saturday. The United Nations aid agency was allowed to bring 77 trucks loaded with flour into Gaza overnight, but the trucks were stopped by crowds of hungry people. Lindsey Hutchison of Plan International said "having the military control aid and choose who they distribute it to in limited ways completely violates the way humanitarian operations are supposed to be conducted." She said the situation is not working. "We saw chaos and despair at the distribution site, which is frankly masquerading as a humanitarian aid scheme. That's not what this is," she told Al Jazeera from New York. More than 54,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the war began Oct. 7, 2023. UN agency says 77 trucks with aid goods were stormed in Gaza
A large number of starving people in the Gaza Strip have stopped, stormed and looted 77 trucks carrying aid goods from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) on their way to distribution centres, the Rome-based agency posted on the platform X on Saturday. "After nearly 80 days of a total blockade, communities are starving - and they are no longer willing to watch food pass them by," the statement said. "To restore hope, ease fear and prevent further chaos, we must flood the communities with food - now. Only consistent large-scale aid can rebuild trust," the WFP wrote. The WFP stated that it is capable of doing so: "WFP has enough food to feed all 2.2 [million] people for 2 months," the post on X further stated. However, this requires safe transport routes in the Gaza Strip, faster approval procedures on the Israeli side and ultimately a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, which has been ongoing for almost 20 months. After a blockade of aid deliveries lasting several months, Israel has been allowing a small amount of goods into the sealed-off coastal strip for a few days. The blockade was intended to increase pressure on the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement to release the remaining hostages it is holding in the Gaza Strip. Additionally, the government accused Hamas of stealing aid goods to make money, which Hamas denies.

Hamas seeks amendments to the US ceasefire proposal for Gaza
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Hamas is seeking amendments to the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal for Gaza, a senior official with the group told The Associated Press on Saturday, as hungry Palestinians in Gaza stopped and emptied dozens of trucks carrying aid. The Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks, said proposed amendments focused on 'the U.S. guarantees, the timing of hostage release, the delivery of aid and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.' A separate Hamas statement said the proposal aims for a permanent ceasefire, a comprehensive Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and an ensured flow of aid. It said 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 others would be released ' in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners.' Israeli officials have approved the U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire in the nearly 20-month war. President Trump has said negotiators were nearing a deal. A ceasefire would pause the fighting for 60 days, release some of the 58 hostages still held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and much-needed food aid and other assistance, according to Hamas and Egyptian officials who earlier spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Palestinians in Gaza blocked and offloaded 77 food trucks, the U.N. World Food Program said, as hunger mounts following Israel's monthslong blockade of the territory. The WFP said the aid, mostly flour, was taken before the trucks could reach their destination. The U.N. has said 600 per day were entering under the previous ceasefire that Israel ended with new bombardment. The WFP said the fear of starvation in Gaza is high. 'We need to flood communities with food for the next few days to calm anxieties and rebuild the trust with communities that more food is coming,' it said in a statement — adding that it has over 140,000 metric tons of food — enough to feed Gazans for two months — ready to be brought in. The United Nations said earlier this month that Israeli authorities have forced them to use unsecured routes within areas controlled by Israel's military in the eastern areas of Rafah and Khan Younis, where armed gangs are active and trucks were stopped. An internal document shared with aid groups about security incidents, seen by the AP, said there were four incidents of facilities being looted in three days at the end of May, not including Saturday's. The U.N. says it has been unable to get enough aid in because of fighting. On Friday, U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said it only picked up five truckloads of cargo from the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom crossing, and the other 60 trucks had to return due to intense hostilities. A new U.S- and Israeli-backed foundation started operations in Gaza this week, distributing food at several sites in a chaotic rollout. Israel says the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation eventually will replace the aid operation that the U.N. and others have carried out during nearly 20 months of war. It says the new mechanism is necessary, accusing Hamas of siphoning off large amounts of aid. The U.N. denies that significant diversion takes place. The GHF works with armed contractors, which it says are needed to distribute food safely. Aid groups have accused the foundation of militarizing aid. Israel continued its military campaign across Gaza, saying it struck dozens of targets over the past day. Gaza's Health Ministry said at least 60 people were killed by Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours. The ministry said three people were killed by Israeli gunfire early Saturday in Rafah. Three others were killed — parents and a child — when their car was struck in Gaza City. An Israeli strike hit another car in Gaza City, killing four. And an Israeli strike hit a tent sheltering displaced people in Khan Younis, killing six, said Weam Fares, a spokesperson for Nasser Hospital. Israel's military said several projectiles from Gaza fell in open areas. The war began when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and taking 250 hostages. Of those taken captive, 58 remain in Gaza.
