Former Mauritanian president jailed for 15 years

NOUAKCHOTT : Mauritania's former president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday on corruption charges following an appeal to a Nouakchott court by both the state and Aziz's defence against a sentence imposed in 2023.
Abdel Aziz led the West African country for a decade after coming to power in a 2008 coup, followed by an election a year later. He was an ally of Western powers fighting Islamist militants in the Sahel region.
Abdel Aziz, who has denied corruption allegations, was found guilty of economic crimes and abuse of power. He was initially handed a five-year prison sentence in Dec 2023 before the state appealed against the leniency of that punishment and Aziz's team appealed the ruling, saying only a high court of justice was qualified to try a former president.
'It is a decision that reflects the pressure the executive branch exerts on the judiciary,' defence lawyer Mohameden Ichidou told Reuters, adding that the defence would appeal against the decision to the Supreme Court.
Brahim Ebety, one of the plaintiff lawyers for the Mauritanian state, welcomed the ruling.
'All the evidence has established that the former president, who single-handedly ruled the entire country, is the perpetrator of illicit enrichment, abuse of power, and money laundering,' he said.
Abdel Aziz was elected on a five-year mandate in 2009 and for a second term in 2014. An election in 2019 led to a peaceful transfer of power to Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, initially an ally of Abdel Aziz, but whose parliament later brought charges against him.

The Penang island city council called for an investigation into two viral videos alleging bribery for allowing foreign nationals to operate businesses, Bernama reported. The videos, circulated on TikTok, also allege that council enforcement officers applied double standards in their operations. Separately, the Seberang Perai city council said that it has launched an internal investigation into another viral video in which a man alleges that council officers abused their powers at his friend's business premises. The viral video, which runs for two minutes, includes claims of extortion, threats against customers, wrongful detention of foreigners, and even an incident in which a local man was allegedly slapped after being mistaken for a foreign national. The Penang island city council said two videos circulated on TikTok contained 'numerous false and biased claims which amount to slander and misrepresentation of the council'. It called for an investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. The council said city councillors Tan Soo Siang, R Harikrishnan, Muhammad Khairul Mohd Ali, and Abdul Razak Rahman had also lodged police reports against the person who posted the videos. The Seberang Perai council said an internal investigation has been launched and a meeting held with the business owner involved to gather detailed information about the incident. The council urged the business owner to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if there was genuine evidence of corruption involving council staff.

(AP pic) BRUSSELS : The EU 'deeply regrets' the US sanctions imposed on four judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the European Commission said Friday, voicing full support for the Hague-based court. 'The ICC holds perpetrators of the world's gravest crimes to account and gives victims a voice,' Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen posted on X. 'It must be free to act without pressure.' 'We deeply regret the decision to impose sanctions on four additional individuals,' added commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper. 'We will provide the full support and contribution to ensure the protection of the court and its staff,' she told reporters. The sanctions imposed Thursday – in part over the ICC arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – come as Washington ramps up its efforts to neuter the court. Neither US nor Israel are party to the Rome Statute that established the court in 2002, to prosecute individuals for the world's gravest crimes when countries are unwilling or unable to do so themselves. Two of the targeted judges, Beti Hohler of Slovenia and Reine Alapini-Gansou of Benin, took part in proceedings that led to the warrant being issued for Netanyahu last November. The other two, Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza of Peru and Solomy Balungi Bossa of Uganda, were part of proceedings that led to a probe into allegations US forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan. European Council chief Antonio Costa earlier underscored the EU's support for the ICC, which he said 'does not stand against nations – it stands against impunity.' 'We must protect its independence and integrity. The rule of law must prevail over the rule of power,' Costa wrote on X.

OSLO, June 6 — A Norwegian court on Friday sentenced a doctor to 21 years in prison for committing dozens of rapes over a period of almost two decades. Arne Bye, 55, was found guilty of committing 70 counts of rape and sexual assault during gynecological examinations of his patients between 2004 and 2022. He was also condemned for 80 instances of abuse of his position. Bye committed the acts at his medical practice in the town of Frosta in central Norway. The court in the city of Trondelag barred the doctor from exercising his profession indefinitely and demanded he financially compensate his victims. Ninety-four women testified during the trial, describing how Bye committed multiple acts of non-consensual touching and digital penetration without medical justification. The acts all constitute rape under Norwegian law. Bye also filmed the assaults. 'The suspect's actions make this case an extremely serious one. The actions are unacceptable,' the Adresseavisen newspaper quoted judge Espen Haug as saying in court. The sentence matched the one requested by the prosecution. Bye's defense had argued for lesser sentence, recognising only 20 of the rapes. — AFP
