Dubois replaced by Bakole for Parker heavyweight fight in Saudi Arabia

Al Jazeera21-02-2025

World heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois has withdrawn from Saturday's title defence against Joseph Parker after falling ill.
The 27-year-old, who holds the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title, underwent a medical examination in Saudi Arabia and missed a news conference on Thursday evening, prompting the decision overnight to pull out. Details of his health status have not been released.
'If he is ill, I hope he gets well soon, and I'm looking forward to Saturday and a great show,' said Parker, who will now face last-minute replacement Congolese fighter Martin Bakole.
British-born Dubois took the interim belt in June by beating Filip Hrgovic and was upgraded to champion when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the title due to his rematch clause with Tyson Fury.
Dubois then defended his title in September with a knockout win over fellow Briton Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in London.
Former world champion Parker, 33, claimed the World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight title in 2016 by defeating Mexican Andy Ruiz. He lost the title to Joshua in 2018.
Bakole was 'on his way' to Saudi Arabia from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bakole promoter Ben Shalom told Sky Sports in England.
Promoter Frank Warren confirmed at Thursday's news conference in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, that the no-show by Dubois was because of a medical exam.
'Unfortunately at this moment in time, Daniel is being evaluated by a doctor, and when we have more news, we will share it with you and update you,' Warren said at the news conference.
The first title defence by Dubois – a brutal fifth-round knockout of Joshua – was staged in front of a record 96,000 fans in the English capital.
Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
Beterbiev became the undisputed champion after a contentious points decision over Bivol in October.

Amorim's blunt approach will benefit club: De Ligt

agencies Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has praised Ruben Amorim's blunt approach and feels it will benefit the club in the long run. While Amorim has found winning matches difficult since he arrived from Sporting in November, he has delivered some of the most withering statements about United during his short time in charge. After the 3-1 home defeat by Brighton in January he claimed his side were 'probably the worst in Manchester United history'. In the aftermath of the Europa League final defeat by Tottenham, he said he would walk away without talking about compensation should either the club's hierarchy or the fans feel it was the best way forward. On the recent post-season tour of Asia, Amorim accused his players of being 'chokers' after their shock defeat by a South-East Asia select XI. De Ligt, who skippered Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, feels that, because of his nationality and the Dutch reputation for blunt speaking, Amorim's words are positive. 'I'm from Holland so I like it,' he said. 'I can understand the media are in shock because normally this doesn't happen. 'But I think you can also be really happy that finally someone speaks out, says what he thinks and speaks the truth. 'I really appreciate him in our conversations personally. It gives me a feeling I can trust him and he can trust me.' United are reeling after their worst season domestically since the 1973-74 campaign. There was no backdoor entry to the Champions League thanks to the Tottenham reverse, meaning United miss out on European football and the finances that come with it next season for only the second time since English clubs returned to Uefa competition in 1990. After delivering just seven Premier League victories after arriving at the club in November, Amorim will start the new campaign under intense pressure. However, De Ligt feels the work Amorim is doing around the first-team group will pay dividends. 'I've experienced many managers and he's one of the most easy to talk to as a player,' he said. 'He's really into details. Before signing new players, first he's looking at the culture, what needs to change and what can be improved to become a better football club. From next season we will see more of that. 'I think he wants to build a team of players who are together, fighting for each other and making the most out of what they have. 'Maybe before, you had the best players, but you're not a team.'

On the margins of this forum, Al Attiyah met with HRH Governor of Asir Region Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed bin Aqeel Al Khateeb, and Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology Eng Abdullah bin Amer Al Swaha. The meeting addressed avenues for boosting cooperation between Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the areas of urban development, as well as investment and municipal integration. He discussed Qatar's experience in organising the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as a quintessential model of sustainable urban planning and integrated infrastructure. The Qatari economy has remarkably flourished over the past years, especially in the real estate sector, driven by strategic projects and attractive investment legislation within a holistic vision that is based on quality of life and infrastructure sustainability, he noted. ‘Fab four' reunited at Roland Garros as Nadal is honoured

PA Media/DPA Paris Rafael Nadal was joined by old rivals Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray as he returned to the French Open for a ceremony in his honour. The 'fab four' were reunited as Nadal, the 14 time-champion, was presented with a special 'legend' trophy, while a plaque bearing his footprint was unveiled on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the scene of all his triumphs. Nadal, who retired last year, broke down in tears as he gave an emotional speech but then burst out laughing when he realized he had misplaced one of the pages, with a ball kid rushing on to hand him the missing sheet. It was one of the only times he forgot his lines at the Paris grand slam during almost two decades of dominance in which he won 112 of his 116 matches. Nearly every member of the 15,000 crowd was given a clay-coloured T-shirt to wear, bearing the message 'Merci Rafa'. Those who were not instead wore white tops, creating a mosaic in the stands spelling out 'RG 14 X', and 'RAFA' between two love hearts. The 38-year-old, known as the 'King of Clay', walked out to stadium announcer Marc Maury's famous introduction, listing every one of the 14 years he won the title. Wearing a black suit and shirt, Nadal stood alone in the middle of the scene of his greatest triumphs as a video montage of those victories played out on the big screen. Afterwards, he addressed the crowd in French, English and Spanish, saying: 'This is tough. I've been playing on this court for last 20 years. 'Where I am standing I enjoyed, I suffered, I won and I lost, I lived many emotions on that court - without a doubt the most important tennis court of my career. 'In 2005 I played for the first time aged 18, my first major experience. From that day on I fully understood what Roland Garros meant. 'I've experienced everything over this 20 years, I've had incredible rivals like Andy, Novak and of course, Roger, and many others who pushed me to my physical and mental limits. 'Roland Garros is unique, a fundamental part of tennis history. Many thanks, for everything.' The big screen then cut to Federer, Djokovic and Murray, who said: 'Hi Rafa. After after all these years, and all these fights, we couldn't let you leave like that. 'We really wanted to leave you a message and let you know your old pals will always be with you.' The three of them then walked out, Djokovic and Murray next to each other despite the recent, unexpected end to their player-coach partnership. As current defending champions Carlos Alcaraz, and Iga Swiatek watched from the stands, Nadal hugged his former adversaries - the four of them boasting a combined 69 major titles. 'You gave me a hard time on court but I really enjoyed competing with all of you,' he told them. 'We can be good friends even though we had the best rivalries.' It was certainly a more celebratory occasion than his last appearance, when a clearly unfit Nadal suffered a three-set first-round defeat by Alexander Zverev last year, and a fitting way for the Majorcan to say a proper farewell.
