Pakistan's anti-polio drive suffers a blow after a northern enclave reports first case in 7 years

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan efforts to eliminate polio suffered another blow on Monday after a northern enclave reported its first case in seven years. Overall, it was the country's 11th case since January, despite the launch of several immunization drives.
The virus was detected in a child from the district of Diamer in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, according to the country's polio eradication program.
Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan remain the only two countries where the spread of the wild polio virus has not been stopped, according to the World Health Organization. There are ongoing outbreaks of polio linked to the oral vaccine in 10 other countries, mostly in Africa.
The new case was reported after Pakistan on Sunday wrapped up its third nationwide polio vaccination drive of the year, aiming to immunize 45 million children.
Mohammad Iqbal, a director at the polio program in the northwest, said local health officials were still trying to determine how the poliovirus that was found in the southern port city of Karachi had infected the child in Diamer.
During the summer season, thousands of tourists from Karachi and elsewhere visit tourist resorts in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Pakistan's polio eradication program has been running anti-polio campaigns for years, though health workers and the police assigned to protect them are often targeted by militants who falsely claim the vaccination campaigns are a Western conspiracy to sterilize children.
Since the 1990s, attacks on polio vaccination teams have killed more than 200 workers and security personnel.

Reds ace Hunter Greene to undergo MRI after feeling groin discomfort in win over Brewers

CINCINNATI (AP) — Reds ace Hunter Greene will undergo an MRI on his right groin Wednesday morning after being pulled after five innings during Tuesday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said after the 4-2 win that Greene felt discomfort on his last couple of pitches in the fifth. Greene has made three starts since a 15-day stint on the injured list last month due to a groin strain he sustained May 7 during a start in Atlanta. He was warming up for the fourth inning when he summoned a trainer. 'It's not as bad (as what he felt in Atlanta) but it still grabbed,' Greene said. 'It's not concerning, it's frustrating. I want to be out there and compete. I feel like as a pitcher, you do your best when you're in a groove and you're going out there every fifth or sixth day. It just makes it a little bit more difficult when you're trying to overcome some stuff.' Greene — who made his first All-Star appearance last season — is 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts this year. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed two runs and five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in five innings. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Greene faced 23 Milwaukee batters and threw first-pitch strikes to all of them. According to Sportradar, Greene is the second pitcher to have a 100% first-strike rate when facing 23 or more batters since tracking began in 2000. Detroit's Michael Fulmer went 23 of 23 against Minnesota in 2017. Only seven pitchers have had a first-pitch strike rate of at least 95%. Cincinnati's Nick Martinez was 23 of 24 during a start against Atlanta last season. 'I wish I could have finished some guys a little bit more. I've faced these guys so many times,' said Greene, who made his seventh start against the Brewers. 'I still made some really good pitches, and then they hit it. It's probably because they've seen it a million times, but that's the competitive part of the game and you've got to embrace that.' ___ AP MLB:

Brewers' Brandon Woodruff leaves rehab appearance after a line drive hits his right elbow

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff took a line drive to his throwing elbow during a rehabilitation appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. Woodruff left the game after getting struck by a batted ball from Gwinnett's Cade Bunnell that had a 108-mph exit velocity. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said after the Brewers' 4-2 loss in Cincinnati on Tuesday night that his understanding was that X-rays on Woodruff were negative. Murphy added that Woodruff would undergo a CT scan on Wednesday. The incident could cause one more delay in Woodruff's long-awaited return to the majors. The two-time All-Star last pitched in a major league game on Sept. 23, 2023. Woodruff missed the Brewers' 2023 postseason with a shoulder injury that required surgery and prevented him from pitching last year. He was pitching for Nashville and getting ready to get back to the big leagues last month when tendinitis in his right ankle slowed his return.
