BFI, ACG unveil India's first pro basketball league for men and women
India has taken a major leap in its sporting journey with the launch of its first-ever professional basketball league, a joint effort by the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and ACG Sports Private Limited. The league, which will host competitions in both 5x5 and 3x3 formats for men and women, is designed to offer athletes across the nation a legitimate pathway to pursue basketball professionally. By creating a full-fledged league ecosystem, the organisers aim to shift basketball from a niche sport into the Indian mainstream. The initiative also includes international expertise and a plan to build a high-performance residential academy. With strong structural backing and a bold vision, the league is expected to lay the groundwork for India to compete globally and, eventually, pursue podium finishes at major international events. India's Basketball Dream Finds Structure With the launch of the new league, Indian basketball finally has a structured, year-round competitive platform. ACG's Managing Director, Karan Singh, highlighted the project as a milestone for Indian sport, saying the long-term goal is to ensure that children who dream of playing basketball see a clear professional path ahead of them. He believes the sport has the power to develop character and leadership in addition to athletic skill. Global Expertise at the Helm To ensure the league meets global standards, former Australian NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger has been brought on board as Director of ACG Sports. He will oversee the league's strategic planning and operations, introducing international best practices in league management, athlete development, and commercial partnerships. Building a Pipeline of Talent As part of its broader plan, ACG will establish India's first fully residential high-performance basketball centre. The facility will offer advanced coaching, mental and physical conditioning, and academic balance, helping young athletes evolve both on and off the court. Laying Foundations for Future Glory BFI President Aadhav Arjuna stressed that this is not just about visibility, but about momentum and building real capability to succeed on the global stage. The Federation's Secretary General, Kulvinder Singh Gill, echoed those thoughts, adding that the league will give young players the chance to grow through exposure to international coaches and competition. What Lies Ahead The league's detailed framework including team formation, player eligibility, venues, and operational rules is still being finalised with input from basketball experts. In the months ahead, a League Council will take over operations, while scouting camps, athlete development pathways, and fan engagement initiatives are set to roll out. The long-term aim is to foster an inclusive, commercially viable, and globally respected basketball culture in India.

Indian Junior Women's Hockey Team continues International Tour with Five-Match European Leg
Antwerp, June 7 (UNI) The Indian Junior Women's Hockey Team is set to continue its international campaign with a five-match European tour from June 8 to 17, where they will take on Belgium, Australia, and the Netherlands. The team, which recently concluded a promising outing at the Four Nations Tournament in Rosario, Argentina, has now reached Europe for the next leg of international exposure. India will begin the tour with three matches against Belgium at the Hockey Center of Excellence, Wilrijkse Plein, in Antwerp. They will then face Australia at Beerschot Tennis Hockey Padel Club, in Kontich, before wrapping up the tour with a match against the Netherlands at Hockey Club Kampong, in Utrecht. In Argentina, the Indian side delivered strong performances against quality opposition. They registered a 2-1 win and a 2-2 (2-3 SO) loss against Chile, earned a 1-1 (2-0 SO) win and a 2-4 loss against hosts Argentina, and defeated Uruguay twice — 3-2 and 2-2 (3-1 SO). The tour served as an important step in the team's preparations, offering valuable lessons in handling high-pressure scenarios and adapting to different playing styles. Notably, these matches are also a key part of India's preparation for the FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in Santiago, Chile, in December 2025. Facing strong international opponents in varied conditions will help fine-tune the squad's combinations, build match temperament, and instill the confidence required to perform on the world stage. Speaking ahead of the European tour, Indian Junior Women's Hockey Team Coach Tushar Khandker said, 'This extended tour is an excellent opportunity for our team. We had a valuable learning experience in Argentina, and now moving straight into matches against Belgium, Australia, and the Netherlands will allow us to build on that momentum. These are high-calibre teams that will test our tactical and technical depth, as well as our consistency. For many of these players, this is a critical phase in their development, and such tours give them the kind of exposure that can't be replicated in training sessions alone.' 'Most importantly, this tour plays a crucial role in our preparations for the FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup 2025 later this year. Every match we play now helps us get one step closer to being ready for that challenge,' he added. UNI BM

Ajinkya Rahane to Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Indian players who might retire from T20 International cricket
Image credit: X (Formerly Twitter) After performing poorly in IPL 2025, 5 Indian players can say goodbye to T20 International cricket. These include 2 batsmen, an all-rounder and 2 fast bowlers. It has been a long time since these players played their last T20 International match. Deepak Hooda's name is among the few Indian players who have scored a century in T20 International cricket. His performance in IPL 2025 was also not good. He scored only 31 runs in 5 innings of 7 matches. He played his last T20 International match against New Zealand in February 2023. In such a situation, he can say goodbye to this format. All-rounder Vijay Shankar's name is also included in this list. In IPL 2025, he scored 118 runs in 6 matches. He played his last T20 International match against Australia in 2019. He too can say goodbye to this format. Rahane played his last T20 International match against West Indies in the year 2016. However, some good innings were seen from his bat in IPL 2025. In IPL, Rahane scored 390 runs in 13 matches this season, which included 3 half-century innings. The fourth name is Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwar, the most successful fast bowler in IPL, has taken 198 wickets in this league. This time also he took 17 wickets in 14 matches. He played his last match against New Zealand in the year 2022. In such a situation, his return to T20 international cricket seems difficult. The 5th and last name is of fast bowler Ishant Sharma. This season he took 4 wickets in 7 matches and proved to be quite expensive. He played his last T20 international match against Australia in 2013. Ishant can also leave this format. This season 14 year old Vaibhav Suryavanshi gave 28 runs to Ishant Sharma in one over. No one could digest the fact that this experienced bowler who has played more than 100 tests was beaten like this by these young players.
