This late in the offseason teams usually have most of their roster set but the Buffalo Bills have found one more piece to plug into Sean McDermott's defense, adding veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson to the fold. originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Shaq Thompson spent the first 10 years of his career with the Carolina Panthers. When the team released him back in February, not only was there uncertainty about the next steps of his career, but any new destination would be a major change for him.

Thompson came off two serious season-ending injuries in the last two seasons, allowing him to only play a total of six games in that time. However, some deep-rooted connections would point him toward his next move.
The Panthers drafted Thompson back in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, move orchestrated in some part with the help of Brandon Beane, Sean McDermott and Al Holcomb. Those three now hold roles with the Buffalo Bills.
So it should not come too much as a surprise that the Bills finally claimed Thompson off the market this week, giving him another chance in the middle of their defense. Thompson called back to those connections in his initial conversations with reporters this week.
"Man . . . got released from Carolina—that's the first step," Thompson said. "But just stayed in connection with [Sean] McDermott, with [Brandon] Beane, with Al Holcomb. Just staying in connection with them, updating them just on surgeries and rehabs and where I'm at and stuff like that. I've been there with them in 2015, in Carolina. So kinda just always had that bond there."

Thompson's last full season of football in 2022 was arguably one of his most productive, totaling a career high 78 solo tackles that contributed to a tally of 135 tackles overall.
He joins a defense already operating at a high level, forcing the second-most turnovers in football last season with 32. Buffalo's +24 turnover margin was by far the top rank across the league.
The Bills have a trusted core in place at linebacker already with Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard leading that charge. Yet, Thompson's addition could make for some needed depth if needed down the line and assuming he rids himself of the injury woes that cost him the last two seasons.
Regardless, his connections certainly helped him make enough of an impression to earn a spot for the time being. His old Carolina pals would certainly enjoy him making a clean return to the field and impacting their defense in a positive way this season.

One of Phillies' Top Hitters Joins Mariners and Cal Raleigh in Trade Idea
One of Phillies' Top Hitters Joins Mariners and Cal Raleigh in Trade Idea originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Right now, the Philadelphia Phillies are entering a crucial point in their season that will determine whether they "buy" or "sell" at the MLB trade deadline next month. Advertisement The timing is unfortunate because Bryce Harper just went on the 10-day injured list last weekend with the same wrist injury that has hampered him during the 2024 season. His return date is unknown at this time. If the 39-29 Phillies want to stay in the National League's final wild card spot, they will have to keep winning. But if they slump without Harper, The Athletic's Jim Bowden proposes Phillies' third baseman Alec Bohm as a player who could become a trade piece with the Seattle Mariners. Bohm has a .280 batting average this season and has been one of Philadelphia's most consistent hitters over the course of the last four seasons, where he has had more than 500 plate appearances and is on track to do the same in 2025. Philadelphia Phillies infielder Alec Bohm (28) reacts after hitting a fly ball against the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth inning at Citizens Bank Ross-Imagn Images Right now, Bohm is third on the team behind Trea Turner (.299 AVG) and Nick Castellanos (.287). Advertisement Bohm would also place third on the Mariners in batting average, and Bowden believes that would fill a much-needed hole as a corner infielder who can hit. The 28-year-old Phillies veteran and former No. 3 overall pick in 2018 does not bring a ton of pop to his bat, but the Mariners have Cal Raleigh to do that for them. For a Mariners team that has been platooning between the hitting of Jorge Polanco and the defense of Ben Williamson at third base, Bohm fits somewhat of a happy medium between the two. If the Phillies keep playing good enough for a playoff spot, their willingness to deal Bohm may not be there. After all, Bowden named Philadelphia as a team that could chase after a bullpen arm. However, the MLB insider did not directly correlate a trade for a bullpen arm with moving Bohm. Buccaneers' Star WR Makes Subtle Name Change to Honor Father
Buccaneers' Star WR Makes Subtle Name Change to Honor Father originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers star wide receiver Chris Godwin has had quite a journey the last couple of seasons. Advertisement And it doesn't have anything to do with football. Godwin lost his father a little over a calendar year ago, and is now honoring him as Father's Day approaches. He's also heading into his first Father's Day from the other side of it ... as a father. It's no doubt an emotional journey for Godwin, who issued a press release announcing that he's adding Jr. to be back of his jersey in honor of his late father. "As I kid I enjoyed an amazing relationship with my dad, Rod Christopher Godwin, Sr. From youth football through high school, I always knew that he was there because I would hear him yelling in support of his son. He instilled in me early that I could achieve anything I wanted if I worked hard enough and treated people with respect. I always appreciated and valued the immeasurable impact he had on my life, and I made sure to let him know that every day, not just on Father's Day. I lost my Pops in January of 2024, and Father's Day last year was a time of reflection and introspection. Advertisement "This year, Father's Day represents a full circle moment in my life journey as I get to celebrate being a first-time dad with my son, Ace. Fatherhood has already been an unbelievable experience and has changed me in so many ways. I can only hope that Ace feels the same way about me as I do about my dad. "As a professional athlete, you are always recognized for the name on the front of your jersey, but I also play for the name that's printed on the back. That's why I have chosen to add 'Jr.' to my name in honor of the man who gave so unselfishly of himself to others and helped mold me into who I am today. "Love you, Pops!" As Godwin is coming off a horrible injury last season that could affect his readiness to play in Week 1, he'll no doubt be proud when he does finally take the field with "Jr." after his name on his Buccaneers jersey, after honoring his late father, Rod Christopher Godwin Sr. Advertisement Related: Ex Bucs QB Tom Brady Offers Post-Draft Advice to Shedeur Sanders Related: Buccaneers Have Clear Focus for 2025 Improvement This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 12, 2025, where it first appeared.

WNBA Turns Heads With Paige Bueckers Message on Friday
WNBA Turns Heads With Paige Bueckers Message on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Even after ending her record-setting career at UConn, No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers still has a learning curve in the WNBA. Advertisement Ahead of Friday's matchup between the Dallas Wings and Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA Commissioner's Cup, the league shared a video on X of Bueckers talking about what she's learned so far through a month in the league. Bueckers said there's been a lot to pore over as she learns a new system with the Wings. "Learned a lot, I think there's a lot of new terminology through the system that we have that has been very new and I'm trying to process it all and get all the terms right," she said. Bueckers added that some of the concepts are the same as what she learned in her time at UConn, but the physicality in the WNBA is on another level. Advertisement "You have stuff that you used before, but now there's new terminology here in the W, and then the pace and physicality is something that I'm learning every day," Bueckers said. This season has been a struggle for the Wings, dropping to 1-10 after a loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Bueckers said afterward that she believes her team is setting the right culture and believes the success will follow. "It's challenging but very rewarding in a sense of you being super process-oriented and not result-oriented," Bueckers said. "How we want to have a set of standards, build a culture and have a way we do things and stick to that regardless of wins or losses. "... Then the results will follow and will come as we continue to stay disciplined in who we are every single day."
