LOS ANGELES - Paris St Germain is drawing inspiration from the success of new state-of-the-art venues in Los Angeles as the Champions League title winners begin the process of building a new stadium for the team, CEO Victoriano Melero said.
PSG has outgrown the 48,000-capacity Parc des Princes, and team officials will spend a year studying potential sites in Massy and Poissy with an eye toward offering a variety of entertainment options, Melero said.
"The next challenge is a new stadium," Melero told Reuters in Los Angeles ahead of PSG's Club World Cup match on Sunday in Pasadena.
"For one year we're going to go into an analysis and make a choice for our future, and we're inspired by what is going on in the U.S. with sports facilities," he said.
"One example here is SoFi Stadium. It's incredible and much more than a sports facility - it really is part of entertainment and shows. So that is what we really want to push to diversify our revenue."
SoFi Stadium, a technological marvel that opened in 2020, is home to the NFL's Rams and Chargers and has hosted concerts by artists like Taylor Swift and Beyonce. It will play a key role in next summer's World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The $5 billion stadium is located in Hollywood Park, a growing commercial and residential area. The 70,000-capacity indoor-outdoor stadium sits next to Intuit Dome, the high-tech NBA arena that opened last year.
PSG is looking at Massy, south of Paris, and Poissy, west of the French capital, as potential sites for a new stadium. The team will play Parc des Princes for the foreseeable future while the new stadium is built.
U.S. fans and investors have played a vital role in the stunning success of the club both on and off the field, said Adrien Frier, the French consul-general in Los Angeles.
"Paris St Germain is what you would call in the tech sector a unicorn, and it's a unicorn that has some American blood in it," he said at a reception honoring the team in Beverly Hills, where the Champions League trophy was on display.
PSG has an estimated five million fans in the U.S. and has benefited from its high-profile partnership with Nike's iconic Air Jordan brand.
U.S.-based Arctos Partners holds 12.5% of the shares of the team, with majority owner Qatar Sports Investments owning the remaining 87.5% for a club that is valued at $4.4 billion.
Melero said the team's ambitions are only growing.
"We wrote the story of the club with that cup," he said, gesturing toward the gleaming trophy.
"And right now the next move is to write the story of football with this very young team." REUTERS

Ferrari worked their way to the front and Fuoco took the lead in the third hour on the run from Mulsanne to Indianapolis with the three Ferraris running 1-2-3 at the quarter distance. The BMW driven by Italy's MotoGP great Valentino Rossi had to retire in the LMGT3 category. The race at the circuit in north-west France features 62 cars shared by 186 drivers from 34 countries, and is the fourth round of the World Endurance Championship, with 21 hypercars in the battle for overall victory. Taylor keeps one eye on Olympics as Australia name world championships squad SYDNEY – Coach Rohan Taylor is confident Australia can challenge China and the United States for dominance in the pool after selecting a team that features a mix of youth and experience for next month's world swimming championships in Singapore. Cam McEvoy will be appearing at a record seventh world championships after the 31-year-old booked his spot on the team with a world-best swim of 21.30 seconds to win the 50 metres freestyle at the Australian swimming trials in Adelaide. He will be joined by Kaylee McKeown, Mollie O'Callaghan and Kyle Chalmers as they look to reclaim their world titles after skipping the 2024 championships, while Isaac Cooper will attempt to defend the gold medal he won in Doha in the 50m breaststroke. Thirty-four swimmers have been selected for the pool events, which will run from July 27 to August 3, while six will compete in the open water disciplines from July 15 to 20 as the team begins their build-up to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. "I am excited by what this team can do over the next four years," Taylor said as the squad was selected on Saturday. "This is the beginning of the third Olympic campaign I have been the head coach of, and this team has a strong nucleus in place. O'Callaghan missed out on making a fifth when she finished fourth in the 50m freestyle, won by Olympic silver medallist Meg Harris in 24.17. Harris is a serious gold medal prospect with Swedish world record holder Sarah Sjostrom, who beat her to the Paris Olympic title, pregnant and not racing this year. 'That's what I was training for,' Harris said. 'I found a new way to motivate myself this year, and I found a new appreciation for the sport.' Olympic 400m medley bronze medallist Brendon Smith punched his ticket with a 4:12.81 swim ahead of Will Petric (4:13.23), who also qualified. A rejuvenated Chalmers will take on three events in Singapore after touching first in 22.89 in the 50m butterfly. Olympic 50m freestyle champion Cameron McEvoy was disqualified after coming second. Taiwan imposes technology export controls on Huawei, SMIC
Taiwan has blacklisted Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), dealing another major blow to the two companies spearheading China's efforts to develop cutting-edge AI chip technologies. Taiwan's International Trade Administration has included Huawei, SMIC and several of their subsidiaries in an update of its so-called strategic high-tech commodities entity list, according to the latest version that was made available on its website on Saturday (Jun 14). It didn't publicly announce the change. According to Taiwan's existing regulations, local companies will require approval from the island's government before they can ship anything to users on the entity list. In 2023, Bloomberg News reported that several Taiwanese companies were helping Huawei build infrastructure for an under-the-radar network of chip plants across southern China. The new restrictions imposed by Taipei are likely to at least partially cut off Huawei and SMIC's access to Taiwan's plant construction technologies, materials and equipment essential to build AI semiconductors, such as those made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) for the likes of Nvidia Corp. In Huawei's case, several of its overseas units including in Japan, Russia and Germany were also captured in the update to Taiwan's entity list. Both Huawei and SMIC – and some of their subsidiaries – are also on the US entity list, which has significantly limited the companies' ability to acquire foreign technology. While Taiwan has for years imposed certain blanket bans on the shipments of critical chipmaking equipment including lithography machines to China, it hasn't included leading Chinese tech companies or chipmakers on its entity list previously. TSMC, the go-to chipmaker for Apple and Nvidia, cut off its supplies to Huawei in 2020 because of US export controls. Huawei, together with SMIC, shocked American politicians in 2023 by releasing an advanced, made-in-China 7-nanometre chip. While the two are struggling to improve their technologies due to various curbs, they are still China's best hope to help fill in the AI chip gap left by a lack of Nvidia's most sophisticated semiconductors. Tensions between Taiwan and China also stepped up a notch earlier this year after Taiwan President Lai Ching-te labelled China a 'foreign hostile force' for the first time and unveiled wide-ranging measures to counter infiltration efforts. China claims the self-governing democracy as its territory and has vowed to unify with Taiwan, using force if necessary. BLOOMBERG
