CAFA Nations Cup Platform To Sharpen Harimau Malaya's 'Big Match Mentality'

Barnama9 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) – Malaysia's participation in the 2025 Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup in Uzbekistan this August is seen as an opportunity to sharpen the Harimau Malaya squad's 'big match mentality'.
Local football expert and analyst Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin said the participation is not merely an invitation, but a high-level competitive arena that will comprehensively test the Harimau Malaya's (national team's) physical endurance and mental resilience.
The former Head of Sports Science and Performance Analyst of Sabah FC said the challenges awaiting national head coach Peter Cklamovski's men are real and complex, with two Asian giants – Iran and Uzbekistan – having already qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

'Realistically, the performance gap between Malaysia and these opponents lies not only in the technical aspects of the game but also, more deeply, in the psychological dimension – the ability to perform fearlessly in high-profile matches.
'Statistics and previous match history show that Harimau Malaya often struggle when facing teams with the status of 'Asian powerhouses',' he said.
'Thus, the CAFA Nations Cup can be seen as an exclusive platform to cultivate a 'big game mentality' – the kind of tournament mindset that maintains focus, confidence, and tactical ability under maximum pressure,' he told Bernama.
The Senior Lecturer in Sports and Recreation at the Faculty of Education, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), said the main difference between top-tier Asian football and Southeast Asian football lies in the higher tempo of play, consistent physical intensity and the ability to attack and defend with rapid transitions in repeated phases.
'Teams like Iran operate with a 'high pressing and fast recovery' approach, which not only tests physical endurance but also the cognitive ability of players to make decisions in very limited time and space.
'Uzbekistan, on the other hand, are known for their clear tactical structure and speed in combination play – a form of threat that cannot be neutralised without peak cardiovascular fitness and dynamic tactical literacy,' he said.

Soccer-German Court fines FA over 2026 World Cup-related payment

FILE PHOTO: A German Football Association (DFB) logo is pictured on a backdrop prior to a DFB news conference in Frankfurt, Germany March 4, 2016. REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach FRANKFURT, Germany (Reuters) -A German Court on Wednesday fined the German Football Association (DFB) just over 100,000 euros in relation to a World Cup 2006-related payment which had been at the heart of a years-long scandal that tarnished the reputation of the tournament. The DFB said it took note of Frankfurt Regional Court's decision on Wednesday, adding that an appeal was possible but it would first study the written verdict once published. The case regarding a payment of 6.7 million euros ($7.8 million) made two decades ago damaged the image of the global showpiece event held in Germany. At the heart of the case that dragged through the legal system and involved several other separate investigations is the payment linked to a 2006 World Cup-related event that never took place. The tax return included a 6.7 million euro payment from the DFB to world soccer's governing body FIFA for the 2006 World Cup, although the funds were actually used for another purpose and should not have been offset against tax, prosecutors had said. "According to the ruling, the court assumes that the DFB fully declared and taxed its income from the 2006 World Cup. However, it believes that the 6.7 million euros should have been deducted for tax purposes in 2002, not in 2006," the DFB said in a statement. "The Regional Court imposed a fine of 130,000 euros on the DFB because it ruled in isolation on the year 2006 and did not take into account the excessive tax paid for 2002," the DFB said. "The DFB only has to pay 110,000 euros because the court deducted 20,000 euros due to the excessive length of the proceedings. In April, the same court had discharged former DFB President Theo Zwanziger after ordering him to pay a 10,000-euro fine. The payment in question had triggered investigations over allegations it had been used as a slush fund to buy votes in favour of Germany's bid to host the 2006 tournament. A DFB-commissioned investigation in 2016 had said the sum was the return of a loan via FIFA from former Adidas chief Robert Louis-Dreyfus. The German tax office ordered the DFB in 2017 to pay more than 20 million euros in back taxes related to the year 2006. The tournament was nicknamed the "summer fairytale" because of the home team's run to the semi-finals, and the sold-out stadiums and outdoor viewing areas across the country which attracted hundreds of thousands of fans. Neymar extends Santos stay, eyes Brazil World Cup comeback

SAO PAULO, June 25 — Neymar on Tuesday extended his contract with Brazilian club Santos until the end of 2025, as he attempts to recapture his form in time for next year's World Cup. 'I made a decision and I followed my heart. Santos is not just my team, it's my home, my roots, my history, and my life,' the 33-year-old forward said in a statement from the club. Neymar started his career at Santos before moving to Barcelona and then Paris Saint-Germain. After an injury-hit spell in Saudi Arabia, he returned to Santos in January on a contract that was due to expire on June 30. The injury problems that restricted him to just seven matches in 17 months at Al-Hilal persisted. He has played 12 matches in five months across all competitions for Santos, scoring three goals. In his last appearance in the domestic league, he was sent off for a second yellow card after scoring with his hand against Botafogo. After 12 matches in this season's Brazilian championship, Santos are only clear of the relegation places on goal difference. Since his return to Brazil, Neymar has drawn criticism for partying at the Rio Carnival and for appearing in the gimmicky seven-a-side Kings League while nursing injuries. Neymar is the Brazil national team's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, two more than another Santos product, Pele, but his quest for a World Cup winner's medal has repeatedly ended in disappointment. Neymar was recalled to the Brazil squad in March for two World Cup qualifiers, but withdrew with a thigh injury. In May, new coach Carlo Ancelotti left Neymar out of his first squad. 'I selected players who are in good shape. Neymar has just returned from injury, everyone knows he's a very important player and we're obviously counting on him,' said Ancelotti. — AFP
