Aston Martin has become the first manufacturer to offer the second generation of Apple's in-car smartphone mirroring system.
Apple CarPlay Ultra dramatically expands the amount of screen space that the Apple interface can occupy, entering the car's instrument display as well as its infotainment screen.
This means users can display maps or media alongside the rev counter and speedometer. They will also be able to select one of various designs for the instruments, as well as personalised colours, backgrounds and screen layouts. Chinese consumers have exhibited robust purchasing power for home appliances and intelligent electronic products during this year's '618' shopping carnival, a weekslong sales event that culminates on 18 June, as e-commerce platforms have ramped up efforts to offer steep discounts and shopping subsidies amid the country's pro-consumption policies, such as the consumer goods trade-in programme. Experts said the midyear promotional event is expected to play a vital role in further stimulating people's purchasing appetite, expanding domestic demand and promoting the recovery of the consumer market, given that boosting consumption is a top priority for China's economic growth this year. Data from e-commerce giant JD, which initiated the '618' shopping extravaganza, showed that the turnover, order volume and number of shoppers placing orders on the platform all increased more than 200 per cent year-on-year in the first hour of the shopping gala, which officially started at 8 pm on 30 May. More than 20,000 brands saw their sales surge more than threefold year-on-year during this hour, and the turnover in the electronics categories soared over 380 per cent from a year earlier, JD said. Meanwhile, over 500 home appliance and home lifestyle brands recorded over tenfold growth in turnover compared with the previous year. The transaction volume of Apple, Xiaomi, Midea, Huawei and Haier each surpassed 100 million yuan (£10.3 million) very quickly within the first hour of the promotion, while the sales of more than 10,000 popular electronic products such as gaming laptops, high-end earphones and intelligent robots skyrocketed over tenfold year-on-year. According to Tmall, Alibaba Group's business-to-customer platform, 217 brands saw their sales exceed 100 million yuan (£10.3 million) between 8 pm on 16 May and 9 pm on 30 May. The turnover of home appliances, mobile phones and digital products participating in the country's trade-in programme increased 283 per cent compared with last year's Singles Day shopping festival, a weekslong sales event that peaks on 11 November. The overall sales of home appliances, home decorations and electronic gadgets registered double-digit growth year-on-year, Tmall said. Consumers increasingly prefer to snap up bargains via livestreaming on the e-commerce platform, with the turnover from 419 livestreaming rooms surpassing 10 million yuan (£1.03 million) as of 9 pm on 30 May. 'Consumption has become the main driving force boosting China's economic growth, and the 18 June online shopping extravaganza is pivotal in terms of unleashing consumers' purchasing potential, driving domestic demand and shoring up the economy amid external uncertainties,' said Wang Yun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research. Stephan Patton, from the United States, who works for a multinational company in Shanghai, recently bought a new refrigerator and outdoor sports equipment on Chinese e-commerce platforms. 'I am delighted to stock up on products that I am keen to purchase without spending too much money during the shopping festival.' He said there are some pretty decent discounts if people can catch them in time, and he enjoyed a discount of about 20 per cent with shopping coupons. China's efficient delivery services have also greatly impressed him. 'Most items can be delivered to my doorstep the next day after placing an order. It is quite convenient.' The country announced a raft of measures to expand the scope of the consumer goods trade-in programme in January, increasing funding from 150 billion yuan (£15.4 billion) last year to 300 billion yuan (£30.8 billion) through ultra-long-term special treasury bonds, and offering subsidies for more home appliances and electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. 'The policy measures to encourage trade-ins of consumer goods have not only motivated consumers' enthusiasm to purchase and bolstered the sales of consumer electronic products and household appliances on online marketplaces, but also propelled the popularity of green and energy-saving commodities,' said Mo Daiqing, a senior analyst at the Internet Economy Institute, a domestic consultancy.

This is how the UK is trying to become an EV battery powerhouse
The UK's ambition to become a major centre of EV battery manufacture is one step closer as work begins on its first integrated lithium-ion battery recycling and refining facility that is capable of producing the key ingredients of battery cells on an industrial scale. The new plant in Plymouth is the penultimate stage in British company Altilium's four-part plan, which will culminate in the creation of a refinery on Teesside. When it goes live at the end of 2027, this is slated to produce highquality, recycled cathode active material (CAM) for UK gigafactories. Until then, the Plymouth plant will produce recycled nickel mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) and lithium sulphate – critical intermediate materials for domestic production of battery cathodes used by a range of industries. Creating the CAM used in EV batteries requires expensive refining. Efforts in this direction have been boosted by rules governing new EV batteries sold in the EU that state they will need to have minimum levels of recycled lithium, nickel and cobalt from 2031, with further increases in 2036. Altilium has developed a process for extracting and processing these metals to the required quality and earlier this year announced it had produced, at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, the UK's first EV battery cells using recycled CAM and complying with those regulations. Why domestic battery recycling is 'vital' The news comes in the wake of a report by the government on battery recycling in the UK. It says a secure supply of critical minerals – such as lithium and cobalt – is vital for economic growth and security. However, the country is currently reliant on the international market, especially China, to supply most of these minerals. One solution, it says, lies in the recycling of lithium ion batteries from the growing volume of endof-life EVs, which, it claims, 'could supply between 39% and 57% of the demand for lithium, cobalt and nickel by 2040'. However, the cost of such work can be prohibitive. Altilium says its approach underlines the sector's fi nely balanced economics. 'We're always looking to optimise our processes to make them cost-effective,' said Altilium spokesperson Dominic Schreiber. 'We're scaling progressively and, crucially, validating everything to ensure we de-risk the business at every stage. Until our Teesside plant comes on stream, our intermediate material will be a necessary income generator.' When that day dawns, Altilium's customers for its Teesside product are likely to include Nissan's current and forthcoming gigafactories in Sunderland and JLR owner Tata's site in Somerset.

However, former F1 star Ralf Schumacher has tipped the 51-year-old to take up an improved position at French constructor Alpine. According to Schumacher, 49, Horner could be tempted to leave Red Bull if controversial Alpine boss and majority owner Flavio Briatore offered him shares in the team. A similar deal took F1 design legend Adrian Newey from Red Bull to Aston Martin last year. Speaking on a podcast with Sky Germany, Schumacher said: "Briatore is looking for a good new team boss. "And he and Horner know and respect each other. "I believe this is what he has always wanted and never achieved at Red Bull Racing. "It's something he couldn't get anywhere else. Red Bull's reigning world champion Max Verstappen is 49 points off the pace after losing his head at the Spanish Grand Prix when he crashed his car deliberately into rival George Russell. Verstappen's actions put him on the cusp of a race ban after the FIA slapped him with three penalty points on his superlicence. One more point before June 30 means he will face a race ban, so the Dutchman will need to be on his best behaviour for this weekend's race in Canada and the following weekend's Austria Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton has rubbished retirement talk after declaring his last race with Ferrari was one of the "worst he had ever experienced".
