South Carolina shooting leaves at least 11 hospitalized in Horry County
A shooting in eastern South Carolina left at least 11 people hospitalized over the Memorial Day weekend, police say.
Shots rang out near a boat dock in Little River, South Carolina, late Sunday, May 25, the Horry County Police Department confirmed on Facebook at 9:30 p.m. local time.
The shooting seemingly resulted from an argument on a docked charter boat during a private Memorial Day weekend gathering, the Horry County Police Department told USA TODAY.
First responders transported 11 victims to local hospitals while others reportedly arrived via personal vehicles, according to Horry County Police. At least 10 of those victims suffered gunshot wounds with the worst of the injuries being in critical but stable condition.
Police called the shooting an "isolated incident" adding that there is "no risk to the community at this time."
Horry County Police did not confirm whether any arrests were made in connection with the shooting but said it will work to "identify the person or persons responsible."
A North Myrtle Beach Police Officer's leg was injured Sunday evening after accidently discharging their weapon while responding to a separate call in the Little River area.
The officer was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition, according to the North Myrtle Beach Police Department.
"No other individuals were injured, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety," North Myrtle Beach Public Information Officer Lauren Jessie told USA TODAY. "We are grateful for the quick response of medical personnel and assisting agencies."

Mother of 5-year-old girl killed in Franklin crash by accused drunk driver has also died, DA says
A vigil is planned for the mother of a 5-year-old girl killed in a crash by an accused drunk driver in Franklin over Memorial Day weekend who has also died. Minaben Patel, 38, of Franklin, has died days after the May 24 crash that killed her daughter, Krisha Patel, 5, according to the district attorney and a Facebook post by the SAFE Coalition on Tuesday afternoon. 'The Norfolk District Attorney's Office and the Franklin Police Department are saddened by the loss to Minaben's family and we extend our heartfelt condolences,' Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey and Franklin Police Chief Thomas Lynch said in a statement Tuesday. A vigil for Minaben Patel is planned for 6 p.m. Thursday at the crash site on Grove Street in Franklin, The SAFE Coalition, a Franklin-based nonprofit group, said in its Facebook post. Another vigil was held for her daughter, Krisha Patel, at the site last Wednesday. 'We would like to share, through the families wishes, that Minaben Patel, mother of sweet Krisha, has passed away,' the SAFE Coalition said in its post. 'Minaben's family is again deeply thankful for all the love and support shared over the last week,' the group said. 'They invite the community to honor this amazing Mother, Wife, Family Member and friend this Thursday for a service of remembrance.' The driver accused in the fatal crash, James Blanchard, 21, of Franklin, was ordered held on $250,000 cash bail following his arraignment on May 27. A not guilty plea was entered on Blanchard's behalf. He is charged with motor vehicle homicide while driving negligently and under the influence of alcohol, three counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury, negligent driving, driving a motor vehicle with an open container of alcohol, and marked lanes violation, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey. It was immediately unclear Tuesday if Blanchard would face additional charges in the case. Boston 25 has reached out to Morrissey's office for comment. During his arraignment, prosecutor Christopher Meade said Blanchard told police he had two beers while at a landscaping job on Saturday, May 24 after working that morning at his job as a mechanic. When he left his landscaping job, he opened a 1.75 liter bottle of Tito's vodka. He began drinking straight out of the bottle and drove home in his truck, Meade said during the arraignment in Wrentham District Court. Investigators later found a second, empty 1.75 liter bottle of Tito's in his truck that Blanchard told police was 'from the night before,' Meade said. While driving home around 6:22 p.m. Saturday, May 24, Blanchard crashed into a Honda Accord carrying a family of four on Grove Street in Franklin, Meade said. They were going to Blackstone for a family birthday party. The 5-year-old girl died following the crash, Meade said. Her mother and brother were taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The brother's condition was not known on Tuesday. Her father, the driver of the Honda, was treated and released. Defense attorney Timothy Flaherty had asked the court during Blanchard's arraignment to impose a lesser amount of $10,000 cash bail, with conditions for his release to include electronic monitoring and that he enter an alcohol rehabilitation center. 'It's probably the right place for this young man at this time,' Flaherty said during the arraignment. 'It's a significant case but significant penalties. But I can tell the court that this young man is not a risk of flight.' An autopsy will be performed to determine a cause of Minaben Patel's death, the district attorney said. Meanwhile, services were held for Krisha Patel on May 31, according to the girl's obituary. 'Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to such a precious little soul. In her short time with us, she filled the world with laughter, wonder, and love,' her obituary states. 'Her smile could brighten the darkest day, and her kind heart touched everyone she met.' 'Though her time here was far too brief, her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who loved her,' her obituary states. 'We will carry her memory with us always - like a beautiful, shining star in the sky. May she rest peacefully, wrapped in love and light.' The crash remains under investigation by Franklin Police, the Norfolk District Attorney's Office and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. ‘Get away from the boat!' 911 calls depict panic, chaos after Memorial Day boat explosion
Panicked passengers diving into the water. Others waiting on the smoking boat, desperate for rescue. People passing out. Children burned. A pungent smell of gas. These were the harrowing scenes following the sudden explosion of a 39-foot motorboat at a sandbar in the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale on Memorial Day, according to five newly released 911 calls. A father of four died of his injuries. Eleven people were injured, and many remain hospitalized with severe burn injuries, including two children, ages five and seven. The boat explosion, which took place about 5:45 p.m. near Ninth Street, was caused by fuel vapors igniting, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. Investigators have not yet said what caused the vapors to ignite. A fireball erupted, then quickly burned out, sending 15 people flying and leaving a smoking boat in its wake. Those who could swim dove into the water to escape, while others returned to the boat to wait for help from nearby boaters, according to the calls. One woman called 911 while still on the boat herself, the screams of other passengers audible in the background. 'I need a full address or a closest intersection,' the dispatcher said. 'Mami, I'm in the water, this is a marine emergency,' the woman replied. 'What's going on?' 'There's a burn, there's a fire on the boat,' the woman said. One of the passengers had passed out, she added. Nearby boaters were helping, throwing out lifejackets. A few minutes later, she said the passengers had all managed to evacuate onto other boats. 'We have kids on board, please,' she told the dispatcher, adding that they had been burned, along with at least six other people. In the background, someone yelled, 'get away from the boat!' Another woman on a nearby boat witnessed the explosion and worried that the boat might explode again. She saw people jumping off of the boat and screaming for help. The boat was smoking, and she could see something that looked like oil, she said. 'I don't know if it's going to explode,' she told the dispatcher. '… There's still people on the boat. There's people that can't swim.' She watched as one remaining girl on the boat spoke to someone on the phone. As the boat moved closer, the air became warmer. 'It smells like gas,' the woman said. 'It smells horrible.' Meanwhile, two callers at the nearby Lauderdale Yacht Club also witnessed the explosion from land. Both men said they saw the explosion, then people jumping into the water and several other boats driving up to help. Then they saw some of the people who jumped into the water get back onto the boat. One of the callers said he saw kids on board and people 'flying' before they jumped into the water. 'They were all panicking,' he said. Ten of the boat passengers, including the two children, were later taken by ambulance to the Miami Burn Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. A dog was on board but was not injured. The father who died was identified in a GoFundMe as Joshua Fifi, 29. He was hospitalized with third-degree burns covering 70% of his body, and died days later. Four boat explosions have taken place in Fort Lauderdale in the last six months, a high number for the amount of time. A second boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale left a man hospitalized two days after the Memorial Day one, according to Fire Rescue. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the explosion. This is a developing story, so check back for updates.
