Djokovic cruises into Geneva quarter-finals
Geneva, May 22 (UNI) Novak Djokovic cruised into the quarter-finals at the Geneva Open as he began his latest bid for a 100th ATP title with a straight-set victory over Marton Fucsovics.
Djokovic, who turns 38 on Thursday, won 6-2 6-3 to record his first win on clay since completing the career Golden Slam at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last summer.
The Serb will return to the scene of that triumph - Roland Garros - for the French Open in pursuit of
a record-breaking 25th major title from Sunday.
Finalising his preparation for the second slam of the year, this opening victory in Geneva ended a three-match losing streak for Djokovic following first-round exits in Madrid and Monte Carlo since losing the Miami Open final in March.
Seeded second in Switzerland, behind world number four Taylor Fritz, the sixth-ranked Djokovic will meet Italy's Matteo Arnaldi for a place in the last four.
"It's great to break the ice in a way," Djokovic said on court after ending his wait for a win on clay on Wednesday.
"It's a very demanding surface. We all know how tricky it is to play on clay compared to the other surfaces. You always have to expect to play another one or two shots.
"I'm very glad to be able to play the best tennis when it was most needed. All the way through I was quite focused and pleased with the level of tennis, so hopefully that can continue."
After he chose to part company with coach and former rival Andy Murray earlier in May following six months working together, Djokovic told media on Wednesday that he felt he "couldn't get more" out of their partnership.
That decision was announced after Djokovic suffered a second consecutive first-round exit in a disappointing start to his clay court swing, losing to upcoming opponent Arnaldi in Madrid in late
April.
The former world number one admitted after that loss that he was facing up to a "new reality" amid his early tournament exits in the twilight of his career.
This was therefore an important confidence boost at the start of his latest bid to become only the third man in the Open Era to win 100 tour-level titles - and just four days before chasing a fourth French Open.
Djokovic outclassed the 134th-ranked Fucsovics, sweeping the Hungarian aside in just 77 minutes.
He did so without facing a single break point, settling the first set with a double break of serve and delivering the decisive blow in the sixth game of the second.
Cameron Norrie reached the quarter-finals in Geneva after opponent Tomas Machac retired with injury in the third set, but fellow Briton Jacob Fearnley lost 6-4 6-3 to Australian Alexei Popyrin.
In Paris, several of Wednesday's French Open qualifying matches were suspended by rain, with Britons Dan Evans and Fran Jones among those to see their second-round matches postponed
until Thursday.

Gael Monfils hits back at angry bettors: We both know I'm s**t, yet you bet on me
Gael Monfils hit back at angry bettors who flooded his social media with abuse after his loss in the first round of the Stuttgart Open. The 38-year-old was the underdog in his match against Alex Michelsen, the No. 7 seed, but put up a good performance before losing 6-4 4-6 6-3. The loss didn't sit well with some of the punters and they decided to abuse Monfils on social media, with some even saying that they wished that he suffered a leg break or a career-ending injury. The Frenchman decided to go at the trolls in an Instagram story and launched a scathing rant on the bettors. Monfils said in hilarious fashion he knew he was 's**t' and yet people decided to bet on him and questioned their wisdom. advertisementTennis news: Full coverage 'Hey guys, it's not financial advice, but really, you're still betting on me? First tournament on grass, I play Alex Michelsen, 20 years old, and you wanna bet on me?' Monfils started.'You are writing that I'm s**t. I know I'm s**t. We both know I'm s**t and you still bet on me? Who is the dumbest between you and me, to be honest? No, come on."'By the way, my legs already cracked many times. I've played with a broken leg already. So don't pray for that, but the thing is, I'm not suffering, sorry!'Monfils also brought out the racial abuse bit and asked what does his skin colour have to do with his performance. The Frenchman claimed that he knows he is pretty as his mother and wife Elina Svitolina have told him the same. advertisement'Again, I'm going to mention it, we are in 2025 and you give me the skin colour. What does my skin colour have to do with my tennis performance?'I know I look pretty. I mean, I say that because my mom and my wife tell me I look pretty. Maybe I look really awful for you. Open some books, do something. This time, you know with skin colour, you know it's finished, vanish it from your mind.'Of course, if you want to look a little bit like me, yes, stay a little bit in the sun. Please use some sunscreen, you know, for protection. I mean, I have to help you with that. And open some books, please.'monfils calling out bettors in his comments, i never want him to retire freya (@_endlessfigure8) June 10, 2025'Leave the family away'Monfils also told the trolls to keep his family out of their rage and just come at him only. 'Also guys, things on family, come on, leave the family away. It's just me, you know,' he continued.'My mum, my wife, no one has to come on that. It's just me. If you want to put your rage on someone, just me, don't pray for someone else. It's better. I mean, although if you add people, karma will be really bad. Trust me.'Monfils recently made it to the second round of the French Open.

Indian Men's Hockey Team handed narrow 3-4 defeat by Argentina in FIH Hockey Pro League
Amstelveen, June 12 (UNI) The Indian Men's Hockey Team put on a very spirited display against Argentina, but went down narrowly with the scores at 3-4 in their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 (Men's) game, at the Wagener Hockey Stadium here in Netherlands. For India, Harmanpreet Singh (12', 33') netted twice whilst Abhishek (42') added a third. For Argentina, the goals came from Matias Rey (3'), Lucas Martinez (17'), Santiago Tarazona (34') and Lucio Mendez (46') on Wednesday night. With all to play for, it was Argentina who came out of the blocks quicker than India. And the early pressure paid off as Matias Rey (3') was on hand to fire the Argentine side into the lead. After that, the Indian Men's Hockey Team absorbed the pressure and started to build in attack, causing their opponents some moments of worry. India continued to push for the equaliser, and just before the break, it was Harmanpreet Singh (12') who smashed it home, to end the quarter at 1-1. The Indian Men's Hockey Team were looking to build momentum in the second quarter, but Argentina had other plans. Lucas Martinez (17') scored an early goal to put India under some pressure. However, the Indian Men's Hockey Team fought back as they went on the hunt for a second equaliser. But Argentina managed to hold on despite the waves of attack from India, and went into half-time with the lead. Early in the third quarter, Mandeep Singh earned a penalty stroke for India, and Captain Harmanpreet Singh (33') stepped up and hammered it into the bottom corner. India were back on level terms with Argentina. However, within a minute, Argentina responded with a third goal of their own as Santiago Tarazona (34') found the back of the net. From then on in, India started to up the ante, and pushed Argentina back into their own half. The continued pressure eventually paid off, as Abhishek (42') hit it into the roof of the net to make it 3-3, just before the end of the quarter. The final quarter also had a quick start, as Argentina found a way through India's defence and Lucio Mendez (46') finished it off from close range. In the final phase of the match, India gave it their all in attack, as they marched on in the hunt for another equaliser. The Indian Men's Hockey Team though could not conjure up a fourth goal, and came away with a 3-4 defeat. India is currently fourth in the points tally having accumulated 15 points from 11 games.
