Former NL Rookie of the Year Tommy Helms dies at 83
April 14 - Former National League Rookie of the Year Tommy Helms, a two-time All-Star for the Cincinnati Reds, has died at 83.
The Reds Hall of Fame and Museum announced his death. Cathy Helms, wife of Tommy, said he died Sunday in Cincinnati.
Helms played 14 seasons, primarily for the Reds (1964-71) and Houston Astros (1972-75).
Helms won top NL rookie honors in 1966 and was named an All-Star in each of the next two seasons.
Helms also won two Gold Gloves (1970-71) for his stellar defense as a second baseman.
After his sixth season as a Cincinnati starter, Helms was dealt to the Astros in a huge eight-player blockbuster trade in November of 1971. Among the players the Reds acquired was second baseman Joe Morgan, who went on to win two NL MVPs in a Hall of Famer career.
Helms finished his career by playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1976-77) and Boston Red Sox (1977).
Helms was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 1979.
In 1,435 games, Helms batted .269 with 34 homers and 477 RBIs. He led NL second baseman in fielding percentage three times.
Helms served two fill-in stints as Reds manager (12-15 in 1988, 16-21 in 1989). The first was while Pete Rose was serving a 30-day suspension for physical contact with an umpire and the second came after Rose was suspended for life for gambling on baseball.

WREXHAM AFC: Hislop's praise for 'great guy' Parkinson
There's been success after success for Parkinson at the helm at the Racecourse, with him leading the club to back-to-back-to-back promotions from the National League all the way to the Championship. Hislop, the former Reading, Newcastle and Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper, says a fourth consecutive promotion is a possibility. Asked if the Reds can go up again, Hislop told ESPN FC: 'Yes, they can. I'm forever hopeful. 'I know Phil Parkinson well. Parky and I signed for Reading at the same time. 'Great guy, great guy. I don't think I've played with anybody who's more different on the field than off it. 'That's Parky, nicest man you've ever seen off the field. On the field, he just turns into some(one) totally different.' Looking at any potential business the Reds will make over the summer, Hislop said: 'If he has any say (in recruitment), it's not going to be any kind of big-headed superstar, because... there's nothing about Parky that says that and I'm not sure that Parky would go for anybody who, kind of, in any way emulates that.' Added problems will be coming the club's way with another step-up and Hislop says this is something that Wrexham will relish. 'They've been having to build this squad for some time,' he said. 'You just wonder how much more they need to do to be able to compete. But these are problems that players, managers, the ownership group want to have, want to try to figure out. 'We know all eyes will be on them, not just because of who they are and what they've done, but also, I think a lot of people have bought into this story. 'Bought into how they've progressed through leagues and want to see where they go, and maybe they are able to put together the kind of financing that will see them compete with the big spenders. 'They've shown that they can compete physically with those from lower down. So, it's an interesting prospect for them at this point.' Ben Foster has also been bragging up his former boss Parkinson claiming the best changing room he has been inside is Wrexham. Former England keeper Foster had two spells at the Racecourse to bookend his career, helping the Reds to win the LDV Vans Trophy at the Millennium Stadium during a loan spell back in 2005 and he returned in 2023 as Wrexham clinched the National League title in record-breaking fashion. Foster told Fozcast: 'The way the manager is... allowed total autonomy, total freedom to identify and sign a player. You don't get jobs like that anymore. 'Managers don't get jobs like that where you are the manager, you get to manage everything about the football club. 'Every player that comes in, he has identified them. He knows that person. He knows what their character is. 'He knows they're good at football, obviously, first and foremost, like he's done with everybody he's brought in. 'The best changing room I've ever been in, because everybody is just so down to earth and so respectful, and... I feel like that's the football club in general.'

Liverpool draw up fresh Florian Wirtz plan after completing transfer U-turn
Liverpool are closing in on announcing Florian Wirtz as their third summer signing, with the final stages of the deal with Bayer Leverkusen expected to be wrapped up this week Florian Wirtz will undergo his medical at Liverpool on Friday after the Reds finally reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen. The Premier League champions have been pushing to sign the playermaker all summer. With two years to run on his contract, Leverkusen could afford to hold out until the price was right for them. After knocking back Liverpool's opening two bids, a deal was agreed last week. The Reds will pay a total of £116million to the Bundesliga side, £100m of which is due upfront. It marks a U-turn for Leverkusen, who had initially been seeking a fee in the region of £124.6m. If all add-ons are paid out, it will be a new British transfer record. Even the baseline £100m smashes Liverpool's current club record, which was set when they bought Darwin Nunez from Benfica. Having helped them to win the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal double in 2024, Wirtz will make his first move outside of Germnay. He is expected to sign a five-year contract upon his arrival at Anfield. According to The Athletic, a major step towards completing the deal will happen on Friday when Wirtz undergos his medical. The 22-year-old will arrive in the United Kingdom later this week ahead of the tests. Liverpool have beaten off competition from Bayern Munich to complete their move for Wirtz. It is the English club's third signing of the summer, following Jeremie Frimpong's move from Leverkusen and the arrival of young keeper Armin Pecsi from Hungary. Reds boss Arne Slot is keen to push his side on following this year's title win. Speaking after the final game of the season, he hinted that they would be busy in the transfer market over the summer. "We just want good players and ideally you sign them as soon as you can. But it's not always easy to sign good players, let alone to sign them early in the window. But this club doesn't start working from today onwards," he said. "There is so much hard work being done behind the scenes already this season to find out which targets we have and try to sign them. I have all the confidence that if we've addressed the right player that we try to sign that player. "But let's see when that's going to happen and if that's going to happen because I'm very happy with the squad we already have. Radical changes you will probably not see because that would be a bit weird if you won the league. Liverpool make Darwin Nunez transfer U-turn with message on potential exit
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is among a handful of players who are expected to leave the club this summer with two big Serie A clubs weighing up a move for the frontman Liverpool are said to be willing to accept an offer in the region of €60million (£51m) to sell Darwin Nunez this summer - just months after they rejected a more lucrative proposal for the striker from Saudi Arabia. Nunez, 25, is expected to leave Anfield after a disappointing campaign in front of goal for the newly minted Premier League champions. And there have already been discussions over a potential move away, according to reports elsewhere. The Uruguay international is known to have suitors in the Middle East with Al-Nassr making a £60m bid for the frontman back in January, only to be rebuffed. Interest in Nunez from the Saudi Pro League has resurfaced this summer but the former Benfica man has no interest in making such a move at this stage of his career. Fortunately for Nunez, he also his suitors in Italy with AC Milan and Napoli both keen on a deal for the striker, who Corriere dello Sport claim is now valued at €60m. Liverpool 's current valuation of Nunez, which is similar to the initial fee they paid for him before add-ons back in the summer of 2022, indicates a softening of their stance in regards to selling their No.9, who they were understandably reluctant to lose mid-season. The Reds have also set their sights on signing a new striker of their own this summer with Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike a target. But with a club-record £116m deal for Florian Wirtz in the works, outgoings will likely be needed to finance a move for the Frenchman. After starting just eight Premier League games under Arne Slot last season, Nunez is ready to pursue a move this summer to get his career back on track. And though it remains to be seen if a move to Serie A would appeal to Nunez, a move to either side would allow him to continue playing at an elite level in Europe. Slot praised Nunez for playing his role in the Reds title bid and not throwing his toys out of the pram despite his lack of league starts, saying: 'I don't know exactly what is going to happen. One of the main strengths we had this season is that everybody accepted his role. 'And his role sometimes could be to start every single game, hardly be taken off, sometimes be taken off. It could be sometimes not starting every single game, sometimes not playing hardly minutes.'
