Abu Dhabi unveils groundbreaking life sciences cluster
Abu Dhabi has launched the groundbreaking life sciences cluster, reinforcing its position as a global hub for biotechnology, MedTech, and digital health.
Developed by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the Health, Endurance, Longevity, and Medicine (HELM) cluster is designed to drive healthcare innovation, attract international investment, and deliver lasting benefits to global populations.
Announced during Abu Dhabi Global Health Week, the HELM cluster will serve as a platform for the research, development, manufacturing and commercialisation of advanced health and life science solutions.
From AI-powered diagnostics and pharmaceutical manufacturing to gene therapies and precision medicine, the cluster is poised to enable global companies to transform breakthrough science into scalable and accessible, patient-focused solutions.
With its world-class infrastructure, progressive regulations, and strategic geographic location, Abu Dhabi offers unparalleled access to global markets.
The emirate's multicultural talent base, advanced biomanufacturing facilities, and commitment to innovation make it an ideal launchpad for life sciences companies looking to scale globally.
Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, said: "The Abu Dhabi HELM cluster will provide global and local stakeholders with a wide range of benefits, including access to cutting-edge technologies, world-class infrastructure and progressive regulatory frameworks."
"By creating a globally competitive life sciences hub, we are not only accelerating economic growth and diversification, but we are also ensuring that Abu Dhabi remains at the forefront of developing breakthrough healthcare solutions that will benefit humanity at large," he stated.
Built to meet the rising global demand for advanced healthcare, the cluster is designed to tackle some of the world's most pressing health challenges, including chronic and non-communicable diseases, which account for over 70% of deaths globally, as well as the healthcare needs of ageing populations.
It is tapping growth opportunities in the global healthcare market, which is projected to reach $25.3 trillion (AED93 trillion) by 2045.

t follows the successful launch of the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) cluster in 2023, which addresses smart urban mobility across air, land, and sea– and the AgriFood Growth and Water Abundance (AGWA) cluster in 2024, which addresses food security and water sustainability challenges.

Burjeel Holdings to manage Adnoc's new Das Hospital

Burjeel Holdings will oversee all clinical and administrative functions of the hospital. The facility includes a broad range of outpatient specialties—such as general surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, occupational health, ENT, dental, ophthalmology, and cardiac and pulmonary unit. It also houses a fully equipped emergency department with a minor operating room, licensed pharmacies, and a dedicated blood bank. Abu Dhabi completes gas systems remediation in buildings
The Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi (DoE) has announced that it has successfully completed the gas systems remediation project in buildings with a 100% completion rate. According to DoE, over 200,000 safe working hours were recorded during the implementation of the programme, which began in August 2023, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of gas systems across the emirate. The work was successfully completed on over 2,400 buildings, including more than 200 buildings classified as high-risk, which were addressed urgently, said the DoE in a statement. Additionally, 550 previously undetected gas leaks were identified and repaired, and all gas filling lines were relocated outside the buildings as part of the programme. It also involved the replacement of more than 450 gas tanks and control panels, as well as the installation of over 10,000 gas leak detectors inside kitchens. Dr Saif Saeed Al Qubaisi, Acting Director General of Regulatory Affairs at DoE, said: "Safety is a collective effort and a shared responsibility among all stakeholders in this sector. Building owners play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of the community." "We began our inspection and remediation project in August 2023 and have successfully inspected over 3,100 buildings across the emirate," he stated. Eng Ahmed Alsheebani, Executive Director of the Petroleum Products Regulatory Affairs Sector at DoE, said: "Abu Dhabi continues to lead in ensuring the safe use of gas systems, recognising gas as a vital resource that impacts various aspects of daily life and plays a key role- alongside clean and renewable energy sources - in supporting the stability of the energy sector." According to the Executive Regulations for Gas Works in Buildings, property owners are required to sign an annual maintenance contract with a gas operator permitted by the DoE.

Over the next 12 months, the partnership will enable liquid biopsy testing access across select leading hospitals across the UAE, providing patients with faster, less invasive biomarker insights compared to traditional tissue biopsies, while also strengthening testing infrastructure and capabilities for a wide range of cancers in the UAE. The new testing programme will initially target lung, ovarian, breast, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers, among others, addressing some of the most critical cancer burdens in the region. Validation studies are set to commence shortly at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, marking a key milestone toward the full clinical launch planned for the latter part of Q2 2025. Over time, the collaboration will serve as a foundation for broader expansion across the Middle East, excluding Saudi Arabia, delivering world-class precision oncology solutions to a wider population.
