Police officer made racist comments, panel says
A former police officer made racist comments to colleagues on multiple occasions, a misconduct panel found.
PC Oliver Gobey would have been sacked had he not resigned as a Hertfordshire Police officer on the morning of the misconduct hearing, the panel concluded.
The panel was told, that on 2 July 2023, he directed a "racially motivated" comment at a police sergeant to suggest they had been recruited after 9/11 because they were Asian.
Mr Gobey denied making the racist comments, but the panel concluded on the balance of probabilities, that both incidents had taken place.
After that first incident, Mr Gobey was immediately challenged by PC Wallace, an experienced officer who had been a tutor constable for 20 years.
Days later, on 8 July 2023, Mr Gobey was in a police vehicle in Hitchin town centre with three colleagues.
A man described as being Asian, and his friends, approached the officers and spoke to PC Wallace. The man said that he was from Birmingham and asked for recommendations on places to visit.
After the man had walked away, Mr Gobey allegedly said: "Or you have come down here to escape the honour-based violence you have caused."
Mr Gobey was again challenged by PC Wallace, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Assistant Chief Constable Nicholas Davison, who chaired the panel, said: "They were discriminatory comments and they were his own.
"They were unprovoked. No-one encouraged him.
"Any indication of a racist and discriminatory attitudes in an officer's behaviour is always harmful to public confidence."
The panel also concluded that Mr Gobey "chose to lie" about a business interest in July 2023.
He repeatedly failed to submit a proper application to continue part-time work for a private ambulance service and voluntary work for St John Ambulance, but continued with the latter regardless.
When a senior officer asked if he had submitted a business interest form, he told her that he had, which was untrue.
The panel met in April this year, and found all the allegations against Mr Gobey to be proven on the balance of probabilities, and concluded that they amounted to "serious gross misconduct".
The decision was published last week.

Buona Forchetta reopens following workplace enforcement operation
SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI) — Buona Forchetta in South Park was back to business on Wednesday following a brief closure as a result of a workplace enforcement operation that was carried out by immigration officials last Friday. 'We came to support Matteo. I mean, we've been a customer of Buona Forchetta since 2014 when we first moved to San Diego,' said Dale Haas, a long-time customer. 'They've invited us for Christmas, we've spent special occasions, birthdays…I would say hundreds of times we've come here…holidays,' they said. 'We always feel like this is a family place. Anytime we have guests in town, we always bring them to Buona Forchetta.' Outrage and solidarity after ICE raid shakes South Park restaurant The search warrant released this week shows the investigation dates back to 2020, when Homeland Security Investigations received a tip that the restaurant's owner was hiring immigrants in the country illegally and asking them to work long hours. Homeland Security Investigations received another tip in January, accusing the restaurant of hiring people in the country illegally and using fake names on work schedules. Investigators say that the restaurant submitted fraudulent green cards when asked to turn over employee I-9 forms. As a result of the raid, at least two employees were taken into ICE custody. 'We believe in what Trump is doing and his message is, 'We're not going to stand for it,'' said Pedro Gonzalez, a customer. While Gonzalez said he supports the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, he was thinking of the restaurant while in town and wanted to support it. 'Every business has an overhead cost and just because unfortunately, they had people working they maybe or maybe not…we don't know…shouldn't have been working here, we don't know that,' he said. 'Of course, that's going to be determined at a later date, but we're still going to support the business. It has amazing food.' In a statement released Monday, Buona Forchetta said it received a copy of the warrant and is in the process of reviewing it with its legal counsel. DMPD ends 30×30 initiative to comply with state law banning DEI
DES MOINES, Iowa — A bill signed by Governor Reynolds to remove DEI initiatives, policies, and programs is impacting law enforcement agencies in Des Moines, as the city announced it's withdrawing from a national initiative aimed at recruiting and retaining more women in law enforcement. To comply with House File 856, which was signed into law on May 27, Des Moines is eliminating its 30×30 program. A national initiative to improve and grow the representation of women in law enforcement. The Des Moines Police Department joined the initiative in late 2021, with the goal of growing women in police recruitment classes to 30% by 2030. The change comes just after the police department celebrated its most diverse class of recruits yet in 2024. Increasing the number of Asian, Black, and Hispanic officers and increasing bilingual officers on the force. Currently, the City of Des Moines said that the Des Moines Police Department has 43 sworn female officers, representing roughly 11% of sworn officers. Father, daughter found dead after days-long search in Maine national park
The body of a 28-year-old New York woman was found in a wooded area in a Maine state park on Wednesday, a day after her father's body was found near the summit of Mount Katahdin. The pair were the subject of intense searches over multiple days this week, after disappearing on Sunday as they hiked up to the summit of Katahdin. Esther Keiderling, 28, was found dead around 1 p.m. on Wednesday in a wooded area, Baxter State Park officials wrote in a social media post. Her father, Tim, 58, was found dead a day prior, around 2:45 p.m., near the summit. Both Keiderlings, of Ulster Park, New York, left Abol Campground on Sunday to hike to the summit. They were last seen at around 10:15 a.m. A search for the pair began Monday morning after finding their vehicle still in the day-use parking lot. Park rangers searched several trails, including the Katahdin Tablelands, and found no sign of the father and daughter. The search expanded Tuesday with more than 30 game wardens looking for the pair. The Maine Forest Service and Army National Guard used helicopters to aid in the search. Tim Keiderling was found dead on Tuesday by a game warden and his K-9. Game wardens, park rangers and K-9 teams resumed the search for Esther Keiderling Wednesday. 'We understand that many of our social media followers share in our profound sadness for the family and friends of Tim and Esther Keiderling,' officials wrote in the Facebook post. 'We appreciate your support for their loved ones and the members of the search teams during this incredibly difficult time.
