Kerala woman tests positive for Nipah

Hans India09-05-2025

Malappuram: A woman in Kerala's Malappuram on Thursday tested positive for Nipah, the deadly zoonotic virus that causes infections in human beings and is time and again striking in and around the district in the past few years, officials said.
The 42-year-old woman had been suffering from fever and Nipah-related symptoms for a while.
According to the officials, the first two tests done at a Kozhikode government laboratory came out negative, but with no respite in her health condition, a third test turned positive.
Soon, the sample was sent to the virology laboratory in Pune, and the result, received on Thursday, came out positive.
The woman is now admitted to a hospital in Perinthalmanna near here and has been isolated for a while.
The health authorities were on high alert as Malappuram has been repeatedly reporting Nipah cases since the first outbreak in 2018.
In 2024, two Nipah-positive patients - both youths - passed away, and hence, the health authorities are always on their toes when patients come with persistent fever.
Two immediate family members of the 42-year-old woman had just recovered from a long bout of fever, and the death of their pet dog recently had kept the health professionals on their toes.
The health officials in the district are now working to find out the contact list of the woman. They will also come out with detailed protocols to be followed in the locality.

7-month-old among 60 fresh Covid-positive patients in state

1 2 Kolkata: A seven-month-old baby was among the 60 fresh Covid-positive cases reported in Bengal on Wednesday. The infant, possibly the youngest to get the infection in the state during this current spike, is admitted to Peerless Hospital. Doctors said the child is doing well and does not need intensive care. Since the mother also had mild symptoms, her swab samples were tested and she tested positive as well. With the 60 fresh cases, the total active Covid load in the state has crossed 400. According to sources, the infant was symptomatic with a high-grade fever, sneezing, runny nose, and cough. As she was refusing any kind of feed, including breast milk, and had become increasingly irritable, the parents brought her to the hospital on Monday. "The infant showed noticeable symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. As she refused feed for over eight hours before being brought to the hospital, dehydration set in, and there was decreased urine output," said paediatrician Sanjukta De, who is treating the infant. The upper respiratory samples were sent for confirmation of the type of viral infection via the virus panel test, which can detect 15 odd viruses, including adeno, parainfluenza, RSV, and influenza. The hospital said that the parents of the child, who are residents of south Kolkata, do not have a travel history. However, during the history-taking process, it was noted that the domestic help had a high-grade fever a few days ago, after which the baby's mother developed a mild cough and fever. The child is now recovering with a nebuliser, IV fluid, and other supportive care. "In the past few days, I have come across a good number of children below one year of age with upper respiratory symptoms. But most parents did not want tests to be done. It is alright if the symptoms are mild and simple paracetamol works. But parents should avoid over-the-counter drugs in case the symptoms linger. Instead, they should consult doctors," added De. Doctors said even if Covid-19 largely spared younger children during the pandemic only with mild symptoms, they are seeing some children needing hospitalisation during this current uptick. In fact, there have been reports of at least three other cases of children requiring hospital care in the past two weeks, including a 15-year-old boy in Peerless, a nine-month-old child at Medical College Hospital (MCH), and a two-year-old child at Malda Medical College. While all three have been discharged from the hospital, sources in the health department said a child currently admitted at MCH has also tested positive for Covid-19. Sources in the health department said the child, however, has various health issues, and Covid was an incidental finding. The child is recovering well.

Medical conclave urges stronger push for gender-neutral HPV vaccine for boys

Pune: Boys, along with girls, must be vaccinated against Human Papillomavirus (HPV), doctors at the launch of the "Conquer HPV & Cancer Conclave 2025" last week said. Panelists said that govt backs vaccination for girls under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), but boys and men, who are carriers of the virus, are equally affected by HPV and cancer-causing HPV and hence must also be vaccinated. Speakers emphasised that HPV is not limited to cervical cancer alone. It is also associated with cancers of the sexual organs, affecting both men and women. With peak HPV infection occurring between ages 15 to 25, early awareness and timely preventive action are essential. Medical director of Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College & Hospital Dr Sanjay Lalwani, who anchored the panel discussion, said the indigenous vaccine, Cervavac, is effective, safe and affordable. He added, "It is a gender-neutral vaccine and boys must also get vaccinated. While women can be screened regularly through a pap smear test, as of now men do not have any screening programme. So, boys between the age of 9 and 14 years must also be vaccinated, just like girls." Vaccination can protect partners from HPV-related cancers in adult life. There is no specific way to test directly for HPV in men that is approved for clinical use. The American Sexual Health Association has observed that men are typically screened clinically with a visual inspection to check for lesions such as warts. While still not routinely done, anyone with a history of receptive anal sex may want to speak with his or her healthcare provider about having an anal pap test, the association said. Dr Meenu Agarwal, secretary-general of International Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy, said, she sees young girls and women with genital warts and cervical cancer cases. "Now, when we go to the root of the problem, we realize that it is a sexually transmitted disease and that is the reason we need to vaccinate both boys and girls because we need to take care of the source of the spread." The rationale is to prevent different types of cancers that can occur in men as well, Dr Shirish Kankariya, former president of Indian Academy of Paediatrics, said. Parag Deshmukh, executive director, Serum Institute of India said, "Conclaves across the country will help increase understanding of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and its link to cervical and other cancers." The conclave is part of a nationwide public health initiative led by the institute. 77k Cervical Cancer Deaths India bears a significant burden of HPV-related diseases, particularly cervical cancer, the second most common cancer among women in the country According to the ICO/IARC Information Centre on HPV and Cancer (2023), India reports over 1.23 lakh new cervical cancer cases and more than 77,000 related deaths, annually Up to 90% of anal cancers & 63% of penile cancers are associated with HPV

Former MP tests Covid-positive in Nashik, quarantined

Nashik: Amid rising Covid cases in the state, the city has also reported its first patient. Former MP Hemant Godse tested positive and has been quarantined at his home. He had returned from Mumbai just two days ago. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Godse told TOI that he tested Covid-positive and is quarantined at his home. Nashik Municipal Corporation's (NMC) health department confirmed the same. Godse is staying at his other residence in Deolali Camp outside city limits, and the district health department has been informed in this connection. Meanwhile, NMC has set up a special ward with 10 beds each at two civic hospitals — New Bytco and Zakir Hussain — to treat patients if Covid cases rise in the city. "We have taken precautionary measures. Besides the special wards at two hospitals, we also have adequate stocks of medicines at both facilities for such cases," said a civic official. A senior health officer of NMC told TOI, "We have urged the state health department to provide at least 1,000 antigen kits for rapid Covid tests at the earliest." The NMC health department is also procuring 10,000 antigen kits on its own. A proposal has been submitted to NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri for approval. "Once we get the civic chief's nod, the proposal will be tabled at the meeting of the general body of NMC for its nod," said another civic official. NMC limits host 30 urban primary health centres (PHCs) across areas. Instructions have been given to the medical staff at these centres to conduct antigen tests of suspected Covid patients and also create awareness among people coming to outpatient departments (OPDs) about precautions to take. NMC has appealed to people to wear masks if they are going to crowded places.
