Researchers discover unusual factor influencing bird divorce rate: 'Complex, non-linear relationship'

Kissing in the rain is a well-worn romantic movie trope, but it seems bird couplings can be curtailed if the heavens open up.
A study published in the Journal of Animal Ecology — and summarized by Sydney's Macquarie University — has found that pair bonds among Seychelles warblers might be affected by environmental factors, with rainfall noted as one of the main reasons that mates "divorce."
The research, conducted by a team of international academics, focused on birds found on Cousin Island in the Seychelles. The findings detailed how shifting global weather conditions are altering reproductive activity and harming conservation efforts.
"We analyzed 16 years of data and found a complex, nonlinear relationship between rainfall patterns and divorce rates, with divorce being more likely during years of both low and high rainfall," the university's Frigg Speelman, who was involved in the research, said. "This relationship was notably influenced by an extreme climatic event — the 1997 El Niño-induced rainfall spike."
According to Speelman, the study provides evidence that environmental conditions can impact the "stability of socially monogamous species."
The Seychelles warbler is endemic to the Seychelles islands, and conservation efforts for the bird have already proved challenging. Increasingly unpredictable weather conditions could further impact the species' survival and reduce breeding activity.
"This research not only enhances our understanding of animal behavior in the face of climate variability, but it also provides valuable insights that could inform conservation efforts for species vulnerable to the effects of climate change," Speelman said.
Human-caused pollution is dramatically shifting global weather patterns. Heat-trapping gases cause temperatures to rise, and this increases the strength, length, and regularity of extreme weather events and also leads to large fluctuations in rainfall.
According to the U.N. Development Programme, climate projections for the Seychelles indicate further irregular rainfall patterns.

"Much of the precipitation is falling in sharp bursts, creating heavy flooding in the wet season, while imposing extended period of drought during the dry season," the organization said.
BirdLife International lists the Seychelles warbler as "near threatened," with habitat destruction and the presence of introduced predators among the major risks it faces. The warblers can now add rising divorce rates because of unusual rainfall to the list of complications impacting their future survival.

Cannabis Compound Could Protect Us From Deadly Fungal Disease

A dangerous fungal pathogen has proven no match for what may be one of the most useful plants in nature. Scientists studying the chemical properties of cannabis have found it kills one of the most dangerous fungal pathogens in the world – in a laboratory setting, at least. Cryptococcus neoformans, a species of fungus behind cryptococcosis and cryptococcal meningitis, appears to be vulnerable to topical treatment with cannabidiol and cannabidivarin, compounds found in the plant Cannabis sativa. "When Cryptococcus neoformans gets to your central nervous system, it causes life-threatening meningitis," explains biologist Hue Dinh of Macquarie University in Australia. "The mortality rate is very high, and it's really hard to treat." Fungal pathogens pose a pretty significant threat to human health, with around 300 species known to cause diseases in humans, with varying levels of severity. Because pathogens such as fungi and bacteria continually develop resistances to drugs, new treatment options are continually needed to keep them at bay. One strategy is to look at medications that have already been approved for human use for other ailments. Dinh and her colleagues turned their research to cannabis, isolating five compounds to test on C. neoformans and a range of other pathogens. They isolated the fungal species in a lab, and applied the compounds. Cannabidiol (CBD), which is non-psychoactive, and cannabidivarin (CBDV), which is psychoactive, both killed C. neoformans adroitly, acting even faster than current antifungal treatments. They were also effective at eradicating the fungal pathogens responsible for such conditions as jock itch and athlete's foot. "Proteomics analysis revealed that the antifungal activity of CBD and CBDV was linked to destabilization of the membrane, alterations in ergosterol biosynthesis, disruption of metabolic pathways, as well as selective involvement of mitochondrial-associated proteins," the researchers wrote in their paper. It's one thing to kill a fungus in a petri dish, but quite another to observe the treatment working in a living system. To test their findings further, the researchers turned to Galleria mellonella, the greater wax moth. The larvae of this moth possess an innate immune response that is similar to that of mammals. They are also inexpensive to obtain, have short lifespans, and require no special equipment to keep, making them an excellent model for large-scale studies of infectious pathogens and the treatments thereof. Moth larvae were given small burn wounds, and then divided into groups. One group was left alone with just the burn wounds as a control; the remainder were infected with C. neoformans, and treated with different medicaments. One group was treated with CBD dissolved in dimethyl sulfide. Another group was treated with dimethyl sulfide without the CBD. Finally, the last group was treated using Amphotericin B, a medication used to treat serious fungal infections in humans. The results were striking. The survival rate of the larvae treated with CBD was significantly higher than the survival rate of the larvae treated with the dimethyl sulfide alone, and also higher than the survival rate of the Amphotericin B group. In fact, it was nearly as high as the survival rate of the control group – the larvae that had not been infected with the fungus at all. Although the treatment of infections that reach the lungs and brain is a bit more complicated, the result suggests that, at the very least, the topical application of cannabidiol might be effective at treating a range of fungal skin infections. "If we can demonstrate that these ones work well for common infections," Dinh says, "you could actually just get some CBD oil and then rub it on your skin to treat it." NEW YORK – FOX Weather kicked off "Hurricane HQ Week" on Monday with a live Q&A session with Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross, who answered a range of questions about this year's hurricane season. Norcross, who coined the "superstorm" name himself, explained the complex meteorological scenario. "Sandy was a really unusual storm," he said. "It was late October, and it came from the South. It was a hurricane, but it started interacting with northern type systems as it got farther north." Norcross said the National Hurricane Center (NHC) had initially forecast Sandy to transition into a nor'easter. However, Sandy defied typical classifications. "The tropical system was still intact inside the nor'easter," Norcross noted, meaning it maintained tropical characteristics even as it moved into a colder environment. How To Watch Fox Weather Norcross famously decided against calling it a "post-tropical cyclone," explaining that term made it sound like it was over. "And there was nothing that was going to be over," he added. "The winds had not come down, and the storm surge was coming." Typically, we don't get a hurricane until August, according to Norcross. "Now we have had hurricanes in July," he added. "Last year, we had Beryl that formed in July, and that was a freaky storm because it formed so far south that it missed all the hostileness that was just to the north." While rare, Norcross said, hurricanes have happened in June as well. An El Niño generally tends to hold down the number of storms because the upper-level winds become more hostile, Norcross said. While La Niña generally boosts the number of storms, especially if it is a strong La Niña. Currently, the Pacific is in a "neutral phase." "We have plenty of neutral years that have been super busy hurricane seasons, and then we have some that have really been quite quiet," he said. "So the point is that this does not drive the hurricane season moving into a neutral year. So it's other factors that will affect how busy it is." According to Norcross, some hurricane names are permanently retired from rotation. This practice stems from respect for those impacted by devastating storms. "The idea is that you're in South Florida and you talk about Andrew, for a certain number of people, that brings up really bad feelings," Norcross explained, referencing the catastrophic Hurricane Andrew of 1992. "Having another Andrew would simply conjure those painful memories." The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) oversees this retirement process. NOAA releases 2025 hurricane forecast

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted 'above-normal' hurricane activity this summer in its annual outlook for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. A news release from the organization published last week forecasts a range of 13 to 19 total named storms with winds of 39 mph or higher. NOAA estimated a 30% chance of a near-normal season, a 60% chance of an above-normal season and a 10% chance of a below-normal season. Of the number of storms predicted, six to 10 are forecast to become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher. Three to five of those may become major category 3, 4 or 5 hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or stated in the release it has 70% confidence in these ranges. 'NOAA and the National Weather Service are using the most advanced weather models and cutting-edge hurricane tracking systems to provide Americans with real-time storm forecasts and warnings,' said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in the release. 'With these models and forecasting tools, we have never been more prepared for hurricane season.'This year's hurricane season is expected to be above normal because of warmer than average ocean temperatures, forecasts for weak wind shear and potential for higher activity from the West African monsoon, NOAA stated. ENSO-neutral conditions, otherwise referred to as El Niño and La Niña, are also optimal this year for producing storms. More on the El Niño Southern Oscillation cycle can be read here. In short, the more heat there is settling in the Atlantic Basin, the more energy there is to fuel potential storms. NOAA stated that a reduction in trade winds also allows these storms to develop without disruption. 'As we witnessed last year with significant inland flooding from hurricanes Helene and Debby, the impacts of hurricanes can reach far beyond coastal communities,' said Acting NOAA Administrator Laura Grimm, in the release. 'NOAA is critical for the delivery of early and accurate forecasts and warnings, and provides the scientific expertise needed to save lives and property.' The release stated that 2025's hurricane season also has potential for the West African monsoon to produce tropical waves feeding into some of the 'strongest and most long-lived Atlantic storms' 'In my 30 years at the National Weather Service, we've never had more advanced models and warning systems in place to monitor the weather,' said Ken Graham, NOAA's national weather service director, in the release. 'This outlook is a call to action: be prepared. Take proactive steps now to make a plan and gather supplies to ensure you're ready before a storm threatens.'The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was particularly impactful for the transportation industry. Hurricane Helene destroyed key infrastructure in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, cutting off interstate access along I-40 for months. The interstate connection reopened in February of this year, but heavy rainfall through April and May have contributed to high water levels and additional flood damage along smaller roads in the Carolina mountains. Asheville and other smaller towns still are fighting to rebuild infrastructure that was destroyed in the storm and to secure additional funding resources for that rebuild. Carriers and logistics companies should look to SONAR critical events for tools to help plan decisions during storms this hurricane season.
