Penang food court ordered to close due to cockroach infestation

GEORGE TOWN : The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has ordered a food court in the Barat Daya district near here to close for 14 days from today after the kitchen and food preparation areas were found to be infested by cockroaches.
MBPP said an operation at the food court found that the cleanliness level of the premises was unsatisfactory and well below the set standards.
'The food court has been ordered to close immediately for 14 days in accordance with the by-laws under the council.
'In the operation, among the issues that MBPP paid attention to were the licensing conditions, such as the validity of the business licence, cleanliness of the premises, compliance of food operators and so on,' said a statement on its Facebook page tonight.
The council said it has always stressed the cleanliness of food eateries to ensure that the provision of food for customers is done in a hygienic manner.

The Selangor fire and rescue department said the victim was in his 60s and that efforts to extricate the deceased were ongoing. The department spokesman added that the man had fallen onto the tracks. FMT has reached out to police for further information on the incident. Separately, rail operator Rapid KL confirmed the incident at the station along the Sri Petaling LRT line and said services have been suspended at the Bandar Puteri, Taman Perindustrian Puchong, Pusat Bandar Puchong and IOI Puchong Jaya stations. Bus services have been activated as an alternative for passengers. Rapid KL also said trains coming from the Putra Heights station would turn back at the Puchong Perdana station. Meanwhile, trains arriving from the Sentul Timur station will turn back at the Kinrara BK5 station. In February, a blind elderly man died when he was struck by a train after losing balance and falling onto the tracks at the Titiwangsa LRT station. Prasarana Malaysia Bhd later said it planned to install platform sensors at LRT stations to enhance passenger safety, particularly for people with disabilities. Prasarana also said then that it would begin installing platform screen doors at LRT stations, similar to those used in MRT stations.

Crime in Kelantan rises 15% in 2024 with notable increases in rape, theft

(Bernama pic) KOTA BHARU : Kelantan recorded a 15.1% rise in its crime index last year, driven mainly by increases in violent crime and property-related offences, according to state police chief Yusoff Mamat. He said a total of 2,296 cases were reported between January and December last year, up from 1,994 cases in 2023. Violent crime rose by 8.5% from 390 to 423 cases, while property-related crime climbed 16.7% from 1,604 to 1,872 cases, he added. 'Among the most concerning trends is the spike in rape cases, which rose 20.7%, from 130 in 2023 to 157 cases last year,' said Yusoff during the 2025 state police chief town hall meeting held at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan today. Armed robbery without firearms also increased by 25.6% from 43 to 54 cases, while assault cases saw a 6.8% rise from 147 to 157 cases. At the same time, several types of violent crimes recorded significant drops. Murder cases fell by 55.6% from nine to four, and armed robbery involving firearms dropped 60% from five to two cases. In the property crime category, theft remained the most significant contributor with 732 cases in 2024, up 50.9% from 485 cases the previous year. House break-ins also rose sharply by 41.7% with 628 cases, while car theft cases increased by 23.3% from nine to 12. However, motorcycle thefts declined significantly by 46.9% from 128 cases in 2023 to 68 last year.

Kelantan man seriously injured after being gored by cow meant for Aidiladha sacrifice
KOTA BARU, June 3 — A 35-year-old man was seriously injured after being gored by a cow he was raising as livestock in Kampung Neman, near Jelawat, Bachok, last Friday. Kelantan Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the victim sustained serious abdominal injuries from a deep and wide wound caused by the animal's horns. 'The victim was first taken to Bachok Hospital for treatment, after his family rushed him there following the incident. However, he was later referred to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZ II) here, where he successfully underwent surgery,' he told Bernama today. He said the victim's condition was now stable, but the hospital would monitor the wound for possible infection. It is understood that the man was gored by the cow when it suddenly turned on him as it was being ushered into the pen at about 7pm. The cow was to be sold and handed over to a buyer in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration. — Bernama
