Cape Town cop accused of kidnapping, murder to await bail application outcome

Eyewitness News2 days ago

CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town law enforcement officer accused of kidnapping and murder will have to wait until next week to find out if he'll be released on bail or not.
Thandile Khesa made a brief appearance at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Thursday, alongside four of his co-accused.
The group is accused of kidnapping a man in Kraaifontein on 16 May 2025, when he responded to an online advert for a car on sale but ended up dead.
The prosecution's case suggests that 43-year-old Khesa met with the deceased in Bellville, kidnapped him, and drove in a State-branded car to an open field near Khayelitsha.
It's further alleged that Khesa, together with Mogamat Samuels, Thokozani Kamnjunga, Existing Mudivari and Yaseen Jele, then demanded a ransom of R100,000 from the victim's family for his release.
When the family couldn't come up with the ransom money, the amount was reduced to R5,000, which was paid into a bank account provided by the accused.
Detectives were able to trace Samuels, Kamnjunga, Mudivari, and Jele to addresses in Philippi and Kleinvlei a day after the alleged kidnapping took place.
One of the accused led detectives to the crime scene between Monwabisi Beach and Macassar, where he pointed out a shallow grave where the victim was buried.
The law enforcement officer's bail application has been postponed until next week on Tuesday, while his co-accused will apply for bail later on Thursday.

Image: File Three men are set to go for a pre-trial conference at the Durban High Court for allegedly killing a competitor in their liquor business. After this, they allegedly went to kill an uMkhonto weSizwe Party member, fearing that he might avenge the killing of their competitor. The three men, Siphamandla Vulindlela Hlongwane, 41, from Ziyendane area in Mandeni, Ngcebo Treasure Luthuli, 33, from Mayville, and Thokozani Emmanuel Luthuli, 26, from Bhamshela, face 15 charges which include three counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstance, unlawful possession of firearms, and unlawful possession of ammunition. The State is alleging that on February 29, 2024, Hlongwane shot and killed his competitor, Titus Khethana Sosibo, in the morning. After shooting Sosibo, Hlongwane is alleged to have collected the spent cartridge from the crime scene and left with his accomplice. Fearing that Mxolisi Peaceman Zungu, who was an active member of the MK Party, might avenge his friend's murder, Hlongwane sent Thokozani to kill Zungu in June last year. Zungu was shot on the morning of June 5 while walking with his partner after they had dropped their child at a daycare centre in Mayville. Additionally, the State alleges that Hlongwane and Ngcebo killed Khanyisani Ndlovu, who had come to buy liquor from Hlongwane. Image: Nomonde Zondi The advocate had come to Durban on behalf of SARS for the tax inquiry concerning the tax affairs of Andile Mpisane and 13 others. Mpisane is the son of Durban's controversial businesswoman Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize. The pair was arrested in December last year in Cape Town, and they are currently in custody after the Durban Magistrate's Court denied them bail. During their bail application, the investigating Warrant Officer Praved Maharaj said the attempted murder of Naudé was carried out brazenly, and the men used no form of disguise. He said the duo had no consideration for the public. 'There was a security guard present when the shooting occurred, and he had to flee for his life,' Maharaj said. According to the police officer, the State has a prima facie case against the duo. Maharaj said that in 2016, Mbulwana was convicted of assault and is currently facing charges of unlawful firearm possession. Additionally, Runeyi is said to have a warrant of arrest for two cases, one for theft of a motor vehicle and one for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Beware of fake videos of Ramaphosa, Motsepe in investment scams: FSCA

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has warned the public about investment platforms falsely claiming association with prominent figures such as Patrice Motsepe, Leanne Manas, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile. These platforms have been using sophisticated deepfake videos to promote unrealistic investment schemes and deceive potential investors. The platforms reportedly offer unrealistic daily returns which raises immediate red flags about their legitimacy. 'The FSCA has learnt the platforms may be providing financial services to the public without authorisation. Investors are offered unrealistic returns of between R13,000 and R17,000 per day on an investment of R4,500.' The platforms use fake images and deepfake videos featuring popular public figures. 'In one of the deepfake videos Motsepe is seen promoting the investments offered via the investment platform and Mashatile is seen confirming the platform is authorised and investors will receive returns,' said the FSCA. 'In another video Ramaphosa is seen promoting investments and guaranteed returns. The individuals behind the platforms are not authorised in terms of any financial sector law to provide financial services to the public.'
