Mboko advances to second round of French Open qualifying tournament

PARIS — Rising tennis star Victoria Mboko moved a step closer to qualifying for her first career Grand Slam main draw with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Austria's Sinja Kraus on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old from Toronto fired five aces on the clay courts of Roland Garros while winning 79 per cent of first-serve points to advance to the second round of the three-round qualifying tournament.
Mboko finished the match with a break — her fifth in seven chances. She had a break-point chance in six of her nine return games.
She will next face Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenstein on Thursday. Von Deichmann advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 win over seventh seed Rebecca Marino of Vancouver.
Mboko improved her record this season to 38-5, with most of her wins coming on the lower-tier ITF World Tennis Tour circuit.
She is coming off a runner-up performance at last week's WTA 125 Parma Ladies Open.
Mboko, who entered the tournament ranked No. 122 in the world, was the only Canadian to advance in qualifying Tuesday.
Romania's Patricia Tig downed Kayla Cross of London, Ont., 6-4, 6-2, in another women's first-round match. In men's qualifying, Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., fell 6-2, 6-2 to Austria's Flilp Misolic.
Mboko joins 17th seed Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., 24th seed Marina Stakusic, also of Mississauga, and Carson Branstine, a Californian who represents Canada internationally, in the second round of qualifying.
Andreescu faces Japan's Nao Hibino, Stakusic plays Tamara Korpatsch of Germany and Branstine meets 10th seed Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland on Wednesday.
Also Tuesday, top seeds Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand advanced to the semifinal of the Internationaux de Strasbourg with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 win over Spain's Cristina Bucsa and Xu Yifan. Dabrowski and Routliffe will next face Luisa Stefani of Brazil and Timea Babos of Hungary on Thursday.
Sixth-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal faced Germany's David Altmaier later Tuesday in the opening round of the Hamburg Open.

Want a piece of Bob Cole's hockey legacy? Some of it is up for auction in St. John's
Bob Cole's ability to set the stage and call some of hockey's greatest moments brought him fans from all over the world. Now, those fans can make a piece of his legacy their own. Some of Cole's hockey mementos are up for auction at Bartlett Auctions in St. John's until Tuesday. "Like any family that loses a loved one, they have to go through the process of going through all their loved ones' meaningful life collections. And, you know, it can be a big task if someone had a big life. And my dad had a really big life," Cole's daughter, Hilary, told CBC News Thursday. "We knew that there was people that would appreciate them, would want to have them. Would want to have a piece of hockey history." Cole was a legend, broadcasting sports across the airwaves for five decades. He died in April 2024 at the age of 90. His collection spans a wide range of significant sports items, including framed pictures from events Cole took part in or places he called games, Hilary Cole said, along with things like press passes, merchandise and more. It also includes memorabilia from athletes, like photos with Doug Gilmour, Vincent Damphousse, and a pair of game-worn gloves from Wayne Gretzky. "For me, these are things that were part of his home. And they had more meaning for me when they were in his home, and I was spending time with them," she said. "But I loved seeing him with his friends, cause that's what hockey meant to him, " she said. "There's lovely pictures of him with, you know, maybe Jean Béliveau. Or a picture of him with another player, and those are the things that I know meant a lot to him." "He's got all these mafia books cause he's fascinated by that. He grew up in the '30s and '40s, so some of it is like time and place. He grew up during the war, he had an older brother who went to war. We heard stories about that, and so he's got a lot of war books." Cole said her father might have felt weird about the interest in his memorabilia, but added the family is taking comfort in being able to share a part of him with others.

Canadian baller Andrew Nembhard was dominating seniors as a ninth-grader. Now he's a rising star for the NBA
Canada is in the spotlight at the NBA Finals with four Canadians, including the league MVP, playing a critical role in the series. Adrian Ghobrial explains. A Canadian quartet of star players is rising to the rim in the NBA Finals. Canadians Bennedict Mathurin and Andrew Nembhard of the Indiana Pacers, as well as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort of the Oklahoma Thunder, have each factored into the NBA's championship series. Gilgeous-Alexander, the current league MVP, has been crowned the best baller on the planet this season. Nembhard, another rising star, is making plenty of noise defending Gilgeous-Alexander for long stretches, while hitting clutch shots in these finals for the Pacers. His father Claude Nembhard spoke to CTV National News from Indianapolis, Indiana ahead of game three, sharing that his sons Andrew and Ryan (another NBA prospect), 'both grew up admiring the Toronto Raptors while they were in full force.' He added, 'Basketball Canada and the Ontario Basketball Association have done a great job. The pipeline of young players is still growing.' Raised in Aurora, Ont., the senior Nembhard said Andrew 'has always kept it even keel. That's his superpower. He never gets too high, never gets too low. Same with his brother Ryan too.' Canadian basketball players in the NBA Gus Gymnopoulos is the head basketball coach at Hodan Nalayeh Secondary School. Nembhard's basketball journey can be traced back to the public high school hardcourt at Hodan Nalayeh Secondary School (formerly Vaughan Secondary School). His basketball coach at the time, Gus Gymnopoulos, recalls those early years now etched in Canadian hoops history. Gymnopoulos recounted that he remembered Nembhard as a ninth grader, dominating players from the higher grades. Gymnopoulos' public school basketball program has also spawned the likes of NBA Champion Andrew Wiggins, as well as Nickeil Alexander-Walker and now Andrew Nembhard. When asked how he helps nurture this bevy of young blossoming superstars, Gymnopoulos humbly shared that, 'If you keep it fun and they're able to enjoy the experience of playing basketball, I think that's what propels them for a long career.' He added, 'If you prioritize the team and the kids before winning, then they're allowed to make mistakes and grow through the mistakes, which will eventually propel them to get to a higher level.' After playing two seasons under Gymnopoulos' watchful eye Nembhard transferred stateside, where as a senior he helped Montverde win the U.S. High School Basketball Nationals, and was awarded MVP. In true Canadian form, Nembhard possesses both kindness and grit. From a young age, he was always coachable, a good teammate and classmate. 'Off the court he was kind, always smiling, would hug you, but on the court he's tough as nails,' Gymnopoulos said. The highly regarded Canadian high school basketball coach pointed to Nembhard's family focused upbringing as a key to the 25 year old's ascension to the NBA finals. His parents, Mary and Claude Nembhard, have been taking in the finals - while at times in disbelief. 'Getting here is monumental. To get here in his third year is a big deal. I'm still pinching myself, just kind of soaking it in,' Nembhard's father shared. Moments before the interview, the proud father shared that he just got a call from Andrew, 'We usually have a call on game day; he was just going to have his nap. We're just a regular family.' A regular family, with exceptional talent. There may soon be another Nembhard bringing NBA fans to their feet, Andrew's younger brother Ryan is hoping to be selected in this year's NBA draft.
