🚨 River Plate secure critical Copa Libertadores win at Barcelona SC
Argentine giants River Plate were made to work on their travels tonight but still were capable of coming away with a hard-fought 3-2 win at Barcelona SC.Scorers: Rivero 15', Quarta 49' (OG); Driussi 7', Colidio 26', Mastantuono 48'
Marcelo Gallardo's Los Millonarios outfit got off to the perfect start on the night when Sebastián Driussi opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a calm finish inside the area.
Barcelona drew level on the scoresheet eight minutes later through an inch-perfect glancing header from 16 yards out by veteran Uruguayan forward Octavio Rivero.
Former Argentina youth international Facundo Colidio would restore order in the 26th minute, however, with a finish that mirrored Driussi's earlier strike to put River back into the lead.
The night would go from bad to worse for Toreros, who would be forced into an early substitution, replacing first-choice shot-stopper José Contreras with Ignacio de Arruabarrena due to injury.
River would extend their lead by a two-goal margin through Argentine starlet Franco Mastantuono who only needed to apply a simple tap-in from inside six yards after a fine ball across the face of an open goal from substitute Miguel Borja.
But the home side would pull a goal back instantly in near-identical fashion, with the close-range finish being credited as an own goal by Lucas Martínez Quarta.
Despite 40 minutes remaining on the match clock, River hung on to their one-goal lead to take a commanding lead in Group B, with a chance to seal progression next time out when they lock horns with Independiente del Valle.

Vaessen on Suriname duty: 'Nice to get away from the Netherlands for a while'
Vaessen on Suriname duty: 'Nice to get away from the Netherlands for a while' Etienne Vaessen is away at the Gold Cup with the Suriname national team, and has found his international involvement a happy escape from recent controversy in the Netherlands. The FC Groningen goalkeeper was in the news last month after he was seen fighting at the end of his side's clash with Ajax. After the match, a brawl broke out and Vaessen lashed out at Felipe Sanchez Mateos, then assistant coach of the Amsterdammers. 'It's nice to be away from the Netherlands for a while and that I can leave this behind me. At a certain point, it was all about that and not about the good season I had,' Vaessen reflected in an interview with De Telegraaf. Advertisement 'Of course I'm upset about how things turned out, but I accepted the punishment and drew a line under it for myself now,' said Vaessen. Natio will play its opening match against Costa Rica on June 16. Suriname will later face Mexico and the Dominican Republic in the group stage. GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

An Argentine named Usari, not Messi, shines for Inter Miami and earns MVP in first CWC game
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — An Argentine not named Messi was the MVP for Inter Miami in the Club World Cup on Saturday night. The hero in the tournament opener was goaltender Oscar Ustari. Ustari made eight saves, including a penalty and goal-line intervention, as Miami played Egypt's Al Ahly to a scoreless draw in the Group A tournament opener. Ustari's save of a header in the 33rd minute was second only to stopping Trezeguet's penalty just before halftime and making sure danger was averted when the ball bounced back to Al Ahly's forward. The 38-year-old Ustari returned to a World Cup stage in this new Club World Cup format for the first time since winning the U-20 World Cup in 2005 — with none other than Messi, Inter Miami's captain. Before joining Inter Miami, Ustari was captain of C.F. Pachuca, also in the tournament, but faced controversy because Grupo Pachuca also owns Club León, which was removed by FIFA and had its appeal rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Ustari made 124 appearances with the 'Tuzos' before playing briefly for Audax Italiano in the first division of Chile. He was signed as a free agent in September 2024 by Inter Miami. He has played 22 games, including eight in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. What Ustari said 'I don't like to talk about myself. The team did a great job defensively and that is what I most care about.' 'I remember being retired and knew that my return would come on a field, so I'm very happy about it (being back).' 'I thought we were superior, that's what I think. The game left me with good feelings, but our next rival is very different.' What Suarez said 'We didn't think their keeper would make so many saves, he was the key player in the game along with Oscar in the first half, but that shows that goalkeepers can earn you points as well.' — Luis Suarez, Inter Miami forward. ___ AP soccer:

Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo escapes injury after scary on-court accident
The post Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo escapes injury after scary on-court accident appeared first on ClutchPoints. Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo almost suffered an injury during his trip to South America. Advertisement Antetokounmpo traveled to Brazil this month, as a viral video showed him in the country on Monday. He was present in Rio de Janeiro to dedicate a basketball court in his name in the city. In front of the crowd that gathered at the court to see him, Antetokounmpo decided to inaugurate the court with a dunk. Unfortunately for him, he slipped on the court as he was going up for the jam and took a pretty hard spill. On the bright side, he seems to not have injured himself when he fell, giving the Bucks and their fans plenty of relief to not see him hurt. What's next for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Giannis Antetokounmpo has a lot of recognition as an international star in the NBA, whether it's in Greece, Brazil, or other parts of the world. His presence in Brazil is proof that he is one of the highly recognizable faces of the league. Advertisement This past season saw him continue his individual dominance with the Bucks. After 67 regular-season games, he averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game. In the postseason, he produced 33 points, 15.4 rebounds, 6.6 assists, a steal, and a block per contest. However, the Bucks have been unable to replicate their championship success in 2021. They have lost in the first round since 2023, the last two postseasons ending against the Indiana Pacers. Antetokounmpo wants to continue competing at a high level, but his future with the Bucks is now in a difficult spot. His co-star Damian Lillard will be out for most of next season due to a torn Achilles, meaning the team's floor and ceiling won't be as high. Milwaukee also doesn't have enough cap space to significantly bolster the roster, meaning they would have to make trades to land players who can fit alongside Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo wants to remain loyal to the team that drafted him and he won a championship with. However, if things don't take a turn for the better, he will look elsewhere as his future with the Bucks is on the line moving forward.
