Joplin's birthday celebration highlights history and Irish heritage

JOPLIN, Mo. — We caught up with Joplin's CVB director this evening, as city leaders took time to recognize Joplin's upcoming birthday.
Joplin will turn 152 years old on March 23rd, but the city's celebration commission took time during tonight's council meeting to recognize the milestone.
PREVIOUS: 152 years of Joplin history to be celebrated
A presentation was made specifically on St. Patrick's Day to recognize Joplin's roots and its founding fathers' Irish heritage.
Presenters feel marking the city's birthday is important every year, to remember its roots and where it came from.
'Joplin's always been a city of resilience. You go back to the mining days and the struggling of mining. You know, when they first started there were 20 prospectors here. And, one year later, when they discovered lead, there were 500. And it got as big as 8,000 before the mining was done. So, it's been a mega area for all kinds of development through the years. So, remembering that birthday is important to all of us,' said Patrick Tuttle, Joplin CVB director/ Joplin Celebrations Commission member.
The commission also recognized the fact city hall has been in the historic Newman building for 20 years.

Tourism is up in Joplin, how does it impact the local economy?

JOPLIN, Mo. — Business is booming when it comes to tourism in the Joplin area. 'This is our first stop, so we're really looking forward to seeing some of the street painting,' said Sararae Womack, St. Louis Tourist. Just one of the many points of interest tied to Route 66 that Sararae Womack is visiting during her stop in Joplin. 'We passed a few of the beautiful murals on our way in here. We're looking forward to exploring everything Joplin has to offer,' said Womack. Sararae is just one of many, many travelers highlighted in a new report detailing the impact of tourism on the Joplin metro area. There are big numbers, including more than 1.1 million visitors to the metro region in the 12 months leading up to March. It cites 27 hundred jobs connected to tourism spending. 'Jobs that support tourism, from the hotels to the restaurants to the attractions, and that generated another $408 million that were impacted across the board, of salaries, supplies, all kinds of activities,' said Patrick Tuttle, Joplin CVB Dir. Joplin's CVB director points to a five-year comparison, which includes a couple of devastating COVID years. Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce searching for new president Joplin named one of the best places to live in Missouri, according to report Joplin firefighters tackle 11th-floor fire alarm at Messenger Towers Missouri prepares for sports betting rollout 2024-2025 Golden Lion Award winners honored at MSSU 'We took quite a dive during the COVID years, and a lot of communities are getting back this year, being the fifth year after we got back on our feet two years ago. So we recovered pretty quickly,' said Tuttle. He says there are a variety of reasons tourists come to the area, but adds the Mother Road is one of the biggest factors, and specifically how travelers are choosing to enjoy that blast from the past. 'Pre-COVID. I would say the international traveler would see all of Missouri Route 66 in probably two days. And you and I would probably do it one day. Now we're seeing three to five days. People are slowing down. They're taking their time,' said Tuttle. A state-by-state breakdown shows that the biggest number of travelers comes from other parts of Missouri and Kansas… while there are also significant totals from Texas, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Including Charlie Weddle, who's in town for a few days. He's been here before and says he'll be back again. 'It's a really great town. I love it here,' said Charlie Weddle, Wichita Traveler. One of New York's Most Acclaimed Restaurant Groups Nabs Longtime Soho Bistro

The fast-growing restaurant group, renamed for the late Jamal James Kent, has signed a lease in what had been SoHo's Bistro Les Amis for 28 years. The Substack newsletter Feed Me first reported the news on Jun 10. A source confirms to Eater that the project at 180 Spring Street, at Thompson Street, comes from Kent Hospitality's bar director, Harrison Ginsberg. It will steer toward a casual, neighborhood spot with a focus on drinks, a pivot from the corner bistro's French legacy. The group hasn't yet revealed a name. Bistro Les Amis, run by Roy Ibrahim, which closed at the end of May after nearly three decades in business, was a SoHo mainstay. It was known for its French onion soup, unfussy elegance, and late-night service. It opened in 1998, before the neighborhood was saturated with flagships and influencer-friendly cafes, and maintained a local following even as the surrounding retail landscape shifted. Over a decade after it opened, Time Out pointed to the 'worn cherry bar' as a perch for Spring Street locals in a place that was 'not exactly groundbreaking, but we'd happily linger on Les Amis' turf, however familiar.' Since Kent's death last year, the restaurants from Kent Hospitality group have shifted to reflect emerging leaders, with Michelin-starred Crown Shy overseen by Jassimran Singh, two-star Saga overseen by Charlie Mitchell, and World's 50 Best bar with a spectacular view, Overstory from Ginsberg. The group has continued to grow with Time and Tide in the Flatiron, with Top Chef winner Danny Garcia running the kitchen. The team's largest undertaking yet has been overseeing the operations for several hospitality projects inside the Financial District's glossy new department store, Printemps, including Maison Passerelle and Salon Vert — both overseen by James Beard winner Gregory Gourdet. They're also behind the newly opened Birdee, the Brooklyn bakery in the Domino development from Renata Ameni. Earlier this year, the Times reported that Billy Durney, of Hometown Bar-B-Que and Red Hook Tavern acclaim, has taken on investment from Kent Hospitality, and will open a restaurant with the group at 9 West 57th Street. It was formerly Cucina 8 ½ until it closed in January. Over in Soho, the as-yet-named project will lean on Ginsberg's professional cred, which gained momentum at Fidi's Irish-leaning cocktail destination, the Dead Rabbit. Before that, he helped open Crown Shy in 2019 and signed on to oversee cocktails for the restaurant group. He's now steering the Spring Street build-out, giving new life to one of SoHo's most enduring spaces. See More: Coming Attractions NYC Restaurant Openings
