Surry County teen mourns loss of brother from carbon monixide exposure: ‘He was my best friend'
SURRY COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — After spending time with friends for spring break on Wednesday morning, 16-year-old Marvin Lopez returned to his home off West Pine Street in Surry County to a stench in the air.
'I'm smelling the gas and everything all around my house. I hear my little sister screaming in pain,' Lopez said.
Lopez said he quickly opened the windows and then noticed that his little brother, 11-year-old Jose Rivera Mejia, was not moving.
'I flipped him over. I already knew he wasn't alive. I knew he was gone. I saw his body,' Lopez said
He passed away after firefighters said he was exposed to carbon monoxide.
He wasn't alone, though. Lopez's stepfather, mother and two sisters were found unconscious. They were all taken to the hospital.
Jose, a child who wanted to be a police officer when he grew up, was the only one who didn't survive.
'I really love my brother so much. He was my best friend … He's with God now. He's in a good place,' Lopez said.
According to the Surry County emergency services director, a generator was running in the basement of their home.
Lopez says this was how his family kept the lights on.
'It was a money problem. My stepdad and mom didn't have that much money,' Lopez said.
While Lopez mourned the loss of his little brother, he shared words of encouragement with the community.
'If y'all have a little brother or a little sister … spend a lot of time with them. Play with them. It doesn't matter if you're too old to play those games. Play with your brother. Have time with your brother before it's too late,' Lopez said.
Lopez says his stepfather, mother and two sisters are still in the hospital.

Downtown Las Vegas businesses brace for weekend protests
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Marco Lopez, co-owner of Juice Stars, told 8 News Now his business was vandalized earlier this week during the Las Vegas protest downtown. Anti-ICE expletives were spray-painted on his storefront, and he spent nearly two hours cleaning it up. 'At first I was like 'ugh really,' but I came in, grabbed a razor blade, spray bottle, and just had to sit there and scrape slowly,' Lopez said. He is now preparing his business for the protests planned this weekend. Other employees working at downtown businesses, who wanted to remain anonymous, told 8 News Now they are taking precautions. Many did not want to be named out of fear of retribution. 'The company we partnered with next door had to lock up their doors just as a precaution and for extra safety as well,' a woman told 8 News Now. She explained although they hope things won't get out of hand over the weekend, they are prepared to close their doors if it does. 'To close up early would impact our sales obviously, but we just want to make sure everyone's safe out there, especially our employees,' she said. The downtown protest is expected to take place at the federal courthouse tomorrow from 5-7 p.m. According to a press release, it is meant to be 'peaceful protests against the Trump administration.' Lee's Summit community mourns loss of 14-year-old killed in bicycle crash
LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. — Heartbreak has ripped through the Lee's Summit community after 14-year-old Noah Lakey, an outgoing eighth grader at Summit Lakes Middle School, was killed while riding his bike. According to police, Lakey was riding along the sidewalk near SW Jefferson Road and SW Scherer Road when he entered the westbound lane and collided with a vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. GoFundMe for Pierre teen killed in crash raises 5 times goal
Pierre and the surrounding community continue to mourn the loss of a young life.16-year-old Aiden Van Balen was killed in a car crash on June 4th. Aiden had just completed his sophomore year at TF Riggs High School. He loved playing sports and was known for tooling around town on his moped. 'You know he was a buddy to everybody and such a goofball, some of the stories that his buddies talked about you know just, he was just a remarkable young man,' said family friend Brie Korkow. Soon after his death, Korkow started a GoFundMe campaign to ease the financial burdan an unexpected death like Aiden's can leave behind. 'We blew past that, so I'm like I'll up it to ten, blew past that, and now we are well over 25 thousand dollars, so it's just incredible how people come together, and it's such a great platform to be able to support this family,' said Korkow Korkow saiys Aiden's parents have told her they plan to use some of the money to start a scholarship fund in his name.
