
The James Webb Telescope: Viewing the Universe from Lagrange Point L2
There are five sweet spots where a spacecraft can keep pace with Earth as both orbit the Sun. They are called the Lagrange points, after the brilliant French mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange who found special solutions to what is called the 'three-body problem'.
To locate the second Lagrange point, L2, draw a line 150 million km from Sun to Earth and extend it by about one per cent.
Normally an object orbiting the Sun farther out than Earth takes longer than a year to complete a cycle. But at L2 the gravitational forces of Sun and Earth combine to speed things up, so a
spacecraft
placed there moves in synchrony with the Earth, all three objects remaining in a straight line. Keeping the object close to Earth allows for faster communications and higher data volumes.
Space telescopes
The Hubble Space Telescope has been orbiting Earth for 35 years and continues to provide remarkable images of space. Hubble has led to major breakthroughs in astronomy. It has enabled us to determine the accelerating expansion rate of the universe and pin down its age to about 13.7 billion years. Hubble should continue to operate for at least another decade.

It orbits at about 550km above the Earth's surface and much of the sky is eclipsed by the planet as the telescope moves in and out of Earth shadow every 90 minutes. On Christmas Day, 2021, a successor to Hubble, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or Webb), was launched. Unlike Hubble, Webb orbits the Sun about 1.5 million km beyond Earth at L2, providing an unimpeded view of the sky.

Webb observes in the infrared spectrum and can detect objects 100 times fainter than Hubble. Its main objectives are to study how the first galaxies formed and evolved after the Big Bang, the birth of stars and planetary systems and the origins of life.
Its mirror, with 18 hexagonal gold-plated segments, has a 6.5-metre diameter, considerably larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope. The first image from Webb was revealed by US president

Location and orbit
An object placed exactly at the L2 Lagrange point would be permanently in the shadow of the Earth, cutting off the Sun as a source of power. So Webb has been placed in a halo orbit, following an elliptical path of width about 830,000km around the line from the Sun through L2, so that it avoids being eclipsed by either the Earth or Moon.
This ensures uninterrupted solar power and Earth communications on its sun-facing side. Its sun-shield is oriented so that the temperature of the spacecraft remains constant at a cool 50 Kelvin (minus 223 degrees), crucial for observation in the infrared spectrum.
Launching Webb to L2 was like cycling to the top of a hill by pedalling furiously at the beginning of the climb, generating enough speed to coast uphill and come to a halt near the top. Although an object placed at L2 is in equilibrium, the balance of forces is metastable and a small disturbance will cause it to gradually drift away into its own solar orbit and lose contact with Earth.
However, a spacecraft can be kept near L2 with minimal energy, remaining in line with Earth as it orbits the Sun. The telescope is not intended to be serviced in space but, with relatively little rocket thrust needed to keep it on station at L2, Webb should remain operational for 20 years or more.

Long-term study links coffee to healthier ageing
Most people who drink coffee appreciate the quick jolt of energy it provides. But in a new study, presented recently at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, scientists have found that coffee may offer a much longer-term health benefit. The study has not been peer-reviewed or published, but it was rigorous and included a large number of women who were followed for many years. It also adds to a large body of evidence linking coffee to longer lives and various health advantages, including lower risks of certain chronic diseases – though all of these studies had limitations, including that they were observational and could not prove cause and effect. Still, the results linking coffee to healthier ageing were not surprising, said Fang Fang Zhang, a professor of nutritional epidemiology who was not involved with the study. 'The data is quite consistent that coffee consumption is actually beneficial,' she said. In the study, researchers followed more than 47,000 female nurses for several decades beginning in the 1970s. Every few years, the women answered detailed questions about their diets, including how much coffee, tea and cola (such as Coca-Cola or Pepsi ) they typically drank. Then the scientists looked at how many of the women were still alive and met their definition of 'healthy ageing' in 2016. READ MORE Just over 3,700 women met that definition: They were 70 or older, reported good physical and mental health, with no cognitive impairment or memory problems. Additionally, they were free of 11 chronic diseases including cancer, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. The researchers found a correlation between how much caffeine the women typically drank (which was mostly from coffee) when they were between 45 and 60 years old and their likelihood of healthy ageing. After adjusting for other factors that could affect ageing, such as their overall diet, how much they exercised and whether they smoked, those who consumed the most caffeine (equivalent to nearly seven 237ml cups of coffee per day) had odds of healthy ageing that were 13 per cent higher than those who consumed the least caffeine (equivalent to less than one cup per day). Studies have found links between regular (not decaffeinated) coffee and a reduced risk of Parkinson's disease Drinking tea or decaffeinated coffee was not associated with healthy ageing, the researchers found. That may be because the study participants generally consumed less tea and decaffeinated coffee overall, so perhaps there were fewer chances for the researchers to find benefits linked to them, said Sara Mahdavi, an adjunct professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto who led the study. Tea and decaf coffee also have less caffeine, and tea has different plant compounds from regular coffee, so that may explain the results, too, she added. Drinking cola, another potential source of caffeine, was associated with significantly decreased odds of healthy ageing. Dr Mahdavi cautioned that while drinking up to seven small cups of coffee per day was associated with healthy ageing in her study, that doesn't necessarily mean that drinking that much will benefit everyone, or that it is healthy to do so. Research in other groups of people suggests that the health benefits of coffee may plateau or even dip when they drink more than three to four cups per day. Many other studies have linked drinking coffee regularly to a lower risk of early death. In a study of more than 46,000 adults published in May, Dr Zhang and her colleagues found that those who consumed one to three cups of coffee per day were about 15 per cent less likely to die within the next nine to 11 years than those who didn't drink coffee. That benefit disappeared, though, for people who said they typically added more than about a half-teaspoon of sugar to their coffee and for people who added more than 1 gram of saturated fat (equivalent to about one tablespoon of half-and-half or 3.5 tablespoons of whole milk) per cup of coffee. Research has also suggested that people who drink coffee regularly have lower risks of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, osteoporosis and some types of cancer. These kinds of studies can't prove cause and effect, said Aladdin Shadyab, an associate professor of public health and medicine. But because the benefits associated with coffee have been so consistent, it's unlikely that they are entirely explained by other aspects of a person's life, Dr Zhang said. If anything, drinking coffee is often associated with unhealthy habits, such as smoking and less exercise. The fact that you see benefits after accounting for these differences means that coffee is probably helping, Dr Zhang said. Researchers aren't entirely sure why coffee may be beneficial. 'It's a bit of a mystery,' said Marilyn Cornelis, an associate professor of preventive medicine. Studies of mice have found that caffeine may improve memory and protect brain cells from damage. And human studies have found links between regular (not decaffeinated) coffee and a reduced risk of Parkinson's disease. Both regular and decaf coffee contain hundreds of chemical compounds, including many that may lower inflammation and prevent cell damage, Dr Mahdavi said. Coffee Opens in new window ] While the new study didn't find a benefit associated with decaf coffee, other research has linked it, along with regular coffee, to lower rates of Type 2 diabetes and other conditions, Dr Cornelis said. Tea also contains many beneficial compounds and drinking it has been associated with better heart health and a longer life. If you drink coffee regularly, consider the new findings and others like it as good news that it may benefit your health – as long as you don't add too much cream or sugar, Dr Zhang said. But if you don't enjoy coffee, Dr Mahdavi added, there's no need to start drinking it. It can interfere with sleep and make some people feel anxious or jittery. The "strange" motion was detected following analysis of archival infrared data gathered by Cassini probe. "The behavior of Titan's atmospheric tilt is very strange," Dr. Lucy Wright, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, said at the time. "Titan's atmosphere appears to be acting like a gyroscope, stabilising itself in space. "We think some event in the past may have knocked the atmosphere off its spin axis, causing it to wobble. The rotorcraft will be carried by Titan's fast-moving winds as it descends through the atmosphere. Winds on Titan's upper atmosphere can be tempestuous, with speeds reaching up to 270mph (430kmph). Near the surface, however, the winds are much weaker. The tilt of the planet affects how Dragonfly's payload - a suite of scientific instruments designed to search for alien life - will be carried through the air. Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid: An imperfect addition to the lesbians-in-space genre

First, the Australian animated film Lesbian Space Princess made its world premiere at the 2025 Berlinale. Now, Taylor Jenkins Reid's ninth novel depicts a – literally – cosmic disaster steered by lesbian astronauts. Set in the early 1980s, Atmosphere follows Joan Goodwin and Vanessa Ford, two fictional women joining Nasa not long after the first American woman on the moon, Sally Ride. As Joan fulfils her dream of training at Houston's Johnson Space Centre, a wave of gay realisation hits her hard and fast. Just as her early infatuation begins to raise questions about how to live with a same-sex partner in a viciously homophobic world – 'You do realise bringing a woman as your date will make you look like a … you know …" – a 1984 mission threatens to take an apocalyptic turn. There's much talk these days about the screenplayification of novels, the claim that writers are replacing interiority with action and dialogue in a bid to get lucratively optioned. Less discussed is the increasingly default presence of cinematically non-linear narratives. What was once an experiment has become the done thing: 1. opening teaser as close to the end as possible, 2. cut to much earlier in the story, 3. interweave the pursuit of both threads until they join definitively at the end. Atmosphere follows this formula. READ MORE I doubt it would bother the author to have this pointed out. In her recent cover interview with Time, Jenkins Reid shot back at critics who assumed she'd ever been trying to write literary fiction: '[M]aybe I love being Candy Land [Jonathan] Franzen.' The novel's feminism operates at a similar emotional temperature: friendly, with a tendency to flatter the 21st-century reader's existing sensibilities She's not a stylist, and that's fine. Franzen can write Franzen's books. Jenkins Reid's job is to write her own. Her sentences convey character, setting and plot without drawing attention to themselves. Unhindered by the road bump of experimental prose, a casual reader might breeze past the insight often packed into short strings of words. But dialogue like this will seep into you if you let it: 'Have you ever been in love?' 'No, I don't think so.' 'Well, it's like a bad cold: it's miserable and then, one day, it's gone.' The humour is gentle rather than uproarious. Only once did I laugh aloud: '… Hank was the recipient of a very large trust fund. It was a fact that Hank wore with complexity." But there are moments that will elicit a soft smile, as when none of Joan's male colleagues make Nasa's final selection: 'No men from our group, huh?' 'No […] I am afraid they were not up to snuff." Convenient truths don't exist' Opens in new window ] The novel's feminism operates at a similar emotional temperature: friendly, with a tendency to flatter the 21st-century reader's existing sensibilities, rather than to prompt any startling self-interrogation. 'Don't thank me for doing the bare minimum,' a male astronaut tells Joan. 'It does a disservice to us both.' I don't disagree. Does anyone reading this? One could reasonably rejoin that Jenkins Reid had never been trying to prompt any ideological awakening. The greater issue is how present-day online the phrase is. 'The bare minimum' has been kicking around the English language for ages, of course, but its application to men being called feminist pioneers for acts of ordinary decency is distractingly contemporary. 'Thank you for your excellent notes on how I can be scared in a less vulnerable way,' Joan says. 'Did she fumble?' she wonders. She's several decades too early for 'vulnerable' to readily signify performatively confessional femininity, and back in the innocent 1980s the verb 'to fumble' still needed an object. The scattering of these moments is too uneven for it to read as an intentional gesture to modern readers. When the language does embody the context, it's thrilling. Here's a liaison with ground control: 'We are go.' 'Guidance?' 'Go.' 'FIDO?', and on for another 20 lines. I had only the vaguest clue what was happening and I loved it; the texture and energy mattered more than the exact meaning. 'At that very moment, people all over the country were convinced that Aids was a punishment for moral failing,' muses the narrator in autumn 1983. Two paragraphs later, Joan has returned to wishing she could get married. There is little sense of a broader queer community for the astronauts. Their romance takes place in an intergalactic vacuum – or a near-vacuum, to deploy the scientific precision that Joan would want – while gay people at home die en masse. Some will hate this. Others will respond that we already have enough books on the trauma of those years. Even readers who find the intimacy myopic will, I think, be moved by it at the same time: 'Joan had had no idea how quickly you could learn another's body. How swiftly their legs become your legs, their arms your arms.' May the lesbian space genre continue to boom. This book is an imperfect addition, but one that floats.
