UK holidaymakers face 'extreme risk' in two Spanish islands amid high temperatures

Daily Recorda day ago

Officials have issued a weather warning about the fire hazards in certain parts of Mallorca and Menorca after temperatures soared
Tourists heading to the beloved islands of Mallorca and Menorca are being advised to remain vigilant following an extreme weather warning. Temperatures are set to rise, increasing the likelihood of wildfires on these Spanish isles.
The the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) for the Balearic Islands broadcasted a cautionary message on June 13. On X, itv said: "EXTREME or VERY HIGH in areas west of Mallorca. VERY HIGH or HIGH in Menorca."

Additionally, AEMET has put out yellow alerts for intense heat in Mallorca from Friday through Sunday, during the hours of 12pm to 7pm, with the thermometer expected to peak at about 36C. Both islands are popular with British holidaymakers, drawing in roughly 2.5 million UK visitors each year.

Staying safe in extreme heat
As reported by the LiverpoolEcho, the NHS explains that more people than usual get 'seriously ill or die' during heatwaves. The main risks during hot weather are:
Not drinking enough water (dehydration)
Overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke
People who are most vulnerable to the heat include:
Older people – especially those over 75 and female
Those who live on their own or in a care home
People who have a serious or long-term illness including heart or lung conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson's disease or some mental health conditions
People who are on multiple medicines that may make them more likely to be badly affected by hot weather
Those who may find it hard to keep cool – babies and the very young, the bed bound, those with drug or alcohol addictions or with Alzheimer's disease
People who spend a lot of time outside or in hot places – those who live in a top-floor flat, the homeless or those whose jobs are outside

The health body issued advice on how to stay safe in the heat. It said: 'Keep out of the heat if you can. If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.
'Cool yourself down. Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.
'Keep your living space cool. Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down.

'Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees. Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.'
Symptoms of heat exhaustion
Signs of heat exhaustion include:
Tiredness
Dizziness
Headache
Feeling sick or being sick
Excessive sweating and skin becoming pale and clammy or getting a heat rash, but a change in skin colour can be harder to see on brown and black skin
Cramps in the arms, legs and stomach
Fast breathing or heartbeat
A high temperature
Being very thirsty
Weakness
If someone is displaying symptoms, you need to move them to a cool place, remove all unnecessary clothing like a jacket or socks, get them to drink a sports or rehydration drink, or cool water, and cool their skin – spray or sponge them with cool water and fan them.
If they don't call down within 30 minutes you need to call for emergency medical assistance as this could be heatstroke

There will be an incredible ceremony at the Horse Guard Parade and an airshow by the Red Arrows. King Charles and Queen Camilla will soon arrive and wave to the crowds from a carriage, as the monarch is still undergoing his weekly treatments for cancer. Following them will be the horse-riding trio Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince William. Kate Middleton and the kids - Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and naughty Prince Louis, six - are yet to arrive. This year will be Charles' third Trooping the Colour parade. The Coldstream Guards are on display for the world to see, dressed in full military regalia, alongside a huge number of supporting staff. Over 1,400 officers and soldiers, 400 musicians, 200 horses and 10 bands are taking part in the Trooping the Colour event. King Charles asked royals to wear black armbands in remembrance of those killed in the Air India plane tragedy. Those wearing the bands will be the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, the Princess Royal, Colonel Blues and Royals, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Colonel Scots Guards. A spokesperson said this is "a mark of respect for the lives lost, the families in mourning and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy". There will also be a minute's silence at the event following Thursday's devastating crash which killed at least 241 people. The parade today is almost five months before King Charles' actual birthday. Charles was born on November 14, though the reigning British monarch has two birthdays. The sovereign's birthday, which is celebrated through the Trooping the Colour, usually falls in the summer months. Notably, the King's youngest son and his family are not present. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not invited last year either. The late Queen used to invite the extended Royal Family onto the balcony, but this was later changed so that only working royals are allowed. Trooping the Colour dates back to the 17th Century, when it was first held by King Charles II. The ceremony takes its name from each regiment showing off their battle colours, which made them easier to identify when at war. Fans can either stream the event or attend live, though Central London is expected to be extremely busy. 8 Cheerful royal fans have gone all out in Union Jack clothing for the event Credit: Goff 8 Preparations are underway for Trooping The Colour 2025 Credit: George Cracknell Wright

M&S hooded parka gets ‘so many compliments everytime I wear it'

The UK summertime weather can be pretty unpredictable, but we've found a lightweight wind and water-repellent parka jacket from Marks & Spencer that is perfect for rain and sun With the unpredictable UK weather that has beaming sun one minute and then a downpour the next, dressing can be a bit difficult. And we're still in that awkward phase of needing to wear a rain-proof jacket most days. We think we've found the perfect summer layer that is ideal for the British summertime and spontaneous rain, but still looks stylish. The Cotton Rich Canvas Stormwear™ Hooded Parka retails for £65, and features a funnel neck, a flattering elasticated waist, an adjustable hood, plus water-repellent Stormwear™ technology to protect you from wind and light showers. The fit toes the line between relaxed and structured, which results in a stylish-looking parka jacket slightly different from other parkas on the high street right now. With tens of glowing reviews, shoppers have been leaving their praises for this handy spring jacket. A standout for many was the chic dark brown colour that makes a welcome change from the usual beige and khaki raincoats about. One shopper wrote: "Lovely jacket, great colour - change from the ubiquitous beige. And it has a zipped inside pocket - a game changer!" While a second added: "Just what I needed for this time of year - wind and shower-resistant and roomy enough to wear with a jumper but not too bulky or heavy. Love the dark brown colour as well - goes with pretty much everything." Multiple shoppers, however, criticised the length of the arms. Many complained that they were far longer than they would have liked, which is something to bear in mind when shopping. If you're in the market for a thinner, more lightweight jacket, our senior shopping writer Faith tested out Columbia's Women's Paracutie™ Cropped Cargo Windbreaker that folds away into your bag. Faith couldn't praise the jacket enough, saying: "The oversized fit is what really sold me on the winbreaker. I took my usual size and it has a relaxed, casual fit that can easily be layered over a thick jumper. The on-trend butter yellow shade was also a major plus, but it does also come in pale pink, black and light khaki."

Cause of death revealed for mum who died on 'dream holiday' to Turkey before 'heart removed'

Beth Martin, 28, became delirious on arrival to Turkey and sadly died the following day. Her family claim her heart was removed after death. A shocking report has revealed the alleged cause of death for a British mum who died unexpectedly on a family holiday in Turkey - with her devastated family claiming that her heart was removed without their consent. Beth Martin, 28, from Portsmouth, had flew to Turkey on April 27 with her husband Luke and their two young children, aged eight and five. However, within a day of what should have been an idyllic break, Beth began acting erratically and was rushed to hospital, reports the Mirror. ‌ Despite being transferred to intensive care, she tragically died the following day on April 28. ‌ Weeks on, a forensic report has emerged claiming to shed light on the sudden circumstances of her death. The report, issued by Turkey's Forensic Medicine Institution and cited by local news source Sozcu, states that Beth died from food poisoning and resultant complications and noted "no evidence" of any traumatic injury. The document by the Forensic Medicine Institution states: "It has been concluded that Martin's death occurred as a result of food poisoning and its complications." It detailed that comprehensive evaluations of Beth's heart have been performed and samples of her cardiac tissue are being transferred to UK officials today. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! In a shock twist, he later faced allegations of poisoning from Turking police and was interrogated, before being cleared of any wrongdoing. Luke shared the devastating task he faced on social media: "To top it off, I had to break the news to my babies that their mum isn't coming home. It broke me," he penned. "Two weeks ago, me, my wife and two kids set out for a family holiday to Turkey. Only three of us made it back. I lost my wife, my children lost their mum, we lost the biggest piece of the puzzle that was our family." ‌ A GoFundMe page set up by family members claims the Martins were kept in the dark about how critical Beth's condition was and that they were left to carry her body through the hospital in a bag. After facing more than two weeks of delays trying to bring Beth home, Luke claims he had to spend thousands of pounds flying her remains back to the UK with him. It has been reported that Turkish doctors has raised concerns about Beth's heart before her tragic death, yet her family asserts they were not informed. Relatives allege that a subsequent UK postmortem revealed her heart had been removed in Turkey without consent. Recounting his harrowing experience, Luke labelled it as "the worst and most traumatic week of [his] entire life", noting that losing his wife has shattered his family beyond expression.
