HSBC banker Peter Wong Tung-shun bought a luxury unit in Hong Kong's Southern district for HK$125 million (US$15.9 million), as sentiment in the city's property market improves gradually.
Two connected units with a total area of 4,616 sq ft were sold for HK$27,080 per square foot to Lion Rock (HK), according to Land Registry records. The property was handed over on Tuesday.
The sole director of Lion Rock, Jeremy Wong Ka-chun, is also one of the three directors of Energy World; the other two are Peter Wong Tung-shun and his wife Camay Wong Ng Kam-mie, according to another Land Registry record.
Peter Wong, 73, is the chairman of HSBC Asia-Pacific. HSBC declined to comment.
The transaction came as Hong Kong's property market was showing signs of recovery, with lived-in home prices recording a small gain for the second straight month in May, according to official data.
In the first five months of the year, second-hand home prices declined 0.9 per cent. They are down 28 per cent from a peak reached in September 2021.

Hong Kong exports up 15.5% in May as firms race to beat China-US tariff deadline

Hong Kong's exports surged 15.5 per cent in May from a year ago, with economists attributing the increase to the front-loading of shipments by businesses racing to beat the July deadline of a tariff truce between China and the United States. The value of total exports reached HK$434.1 billion (US$55.3 billion) in May, the Census and Statistics Department said on Thursday. The strong performance, which followed a 14.7 per cent increase in April, comes during a 90-day grace period on tariffs running from April 9 to July 8. Billy Mak Sui-choi, an associate professor in the department of accountancy, economics and finance at Baptist University, said that firms were rushing to ship goods during the '90-day window'. Looking ahead, Mak said June's export figures should remain strong, but the outlook for July was highly uncertain. 'I am cautiously optimistic for next month, but I estimate there will be uncertain factors in July,' Mak said. The key question is what the US will do after the grace period ends, as it could potentially raise tariffs on Southeast Asian nations as well, challenging the 'China plus one' diversification strategy, he added.

Premier Li Qiang says China's economy a ‘source of certainty' amid global risks

China will continue to be a land of opportunities and an engine of global growth and stability, even as the world faces rising geopolitical challenges and uncertainties, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's (AIIB) Annual Meeting in Beijing. 'China remains the country that contributes the greatest impetus to global economic growth, and the most significant source of certainty for world peace and development,' he said on Thursday. Li's remarks came a day after he told the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin that China's growth would remain 'at a relatively fast speed' and that the country would 'do its utmost' to address challenges facing the global economy. Despite mounting external challenges, China has shown resilience, Li said, citing its solid performance in the first two quarters of this year. He pointed to the 5.4 per cent year-on-year GDP growth in the first quarter, which he called a hard-won achievement. Beijing has set an annual GDP target of about 5 per cent this year. 'China's economy will remain a hotbed of opportunity for the global economy in the years to come,' he added.

Shanghai Gold Exchange launches first offshore vault in Hong Kong

The Shanghai Gold Exchange opened its first offshore warehouse in Hong Kong on Thursday, a move that is likely to bolster the international trading of its contracts. The vault witnessed several transactions of spot gold contracts after it became operational, according to a statement from Bank of China (Hong Kong), which runs the warehouse. Analysts said the launch of the vault and two yuan-denominated gold products represented a step forward for Beijing and Hong Kong in their effort to promote commodities and futures contracts around the world. 'Gold, as a basic precious metal, is, in essence, a commodity, a reserve asset and an investment product,' Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Hong Kong's secretary for financial services and the treasury , said at the opening ceremony for the vault. 'It is also a hedging tool amid uncertain geopolitical and economic outlooks.' He added that the vault and gold contracts would help Hong Kong solidify itself as an international financial centre. The vault was designed to serve international clients as they conducted trading of yuan-denominated bullion and managed their storage. The Shanghai exchange was established by the People's Bank of China in 2002; it has two warehouses in Shanghai and another in Shenzhen.
