Pastor who robbed and choked female congregant sentenced to 15 years
A North West pastor has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in jail for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Petrus Phuthego Gasengake was sentenced in the Molopo Regional Court on Tuesday.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Gasengake, a pastor at a local church, was convicted in connection with a violent incident that took place on April 4, 2021, at the home of a female congregant in Ramosadi Village near Mmabatho in the North West.
NPA regional spokesperson, Sivenathi Gunya, said Gasengake entered the complainant's home, bypassed two individuals present, and proceeded to her bedroom.
"An argument broke out during which he choked the complainant and threatened her with a knife," said Gunya. He then stole R4,000 in cash, bank cards, and car keys before fleeing the scene in the victim's vehicle.
Following the robbery, Gasengake drove to his home in Lichtenburg, where he stabbed his wife without provocation.

Kirsten Kluyts murder: Bafana Mahungela to face trial despite attempts to have charges withdrawn

Image: Facebook The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that it will proceed with the prosecution of Bafana Mahungela, the 22-year-old student accused of the brutal murder of Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts, despite attempts by his defence to have the charges withdrawn. NPA Regional Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has decided not to withdraw the charges against Mahungela, following a detailed review of defence submissions challenging the strength of the State's case. Mahungela is facing multiple charges including kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, and attempted rape. He was arrested in November 2023 at a student residence in Parkmore after the body of Kluyts, a teacher at Delta Park High School, was found dumped on a jogging lane in George Lea Park in Sandton on October 29, 2023. Kluyts had been participating in a local athletic event on the day she was killed and was pregnant at the time of her death. According to the investigation, surveillance footage captured Mahungela wearing a black T-shirt and pants before the murder. He was later seen leaving the vicinity of the crime scene at 8:49 am wearing a blue T-shirt, identified by investigators as the same one worn by Kluyts earlier that morning. He was also seen holding a black item in his left hand. Mahungela has admitted to undressing Kluyts and leaving her naked in the bushes, claiming he only did so to eliminate fingerprints after attempting to 'help' her. Next Stay Close ✕ Post-mortem results revealed that Kluyts died from blunt-force head trauma and strangulation. The State alleges it took approximately eight minutes to inflict the fatal injuries. The defence had filed representations arguing that the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence to link Mahungela to the crime. The State, represented by Advocates Siyabonga Futshana and Leisha Surendra, maintained that it is fully prepared to proceed. 'In response, Advocates Siyabonga Futshana and Leisha Surendra presented the State's position in court, confirming that the prosecution is ready to proceed to trial,' Mjonondwane said. Bail granted to 10 of 11 accused in Sassa fraud and theft case
The Lenasia magistrate's court on Thursday granted bail to 10 of the 11 accused in the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) R4m fraud and theft case. 'Bail amounts range between R10,000 and R30,000,' said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane. 'The fourth accused, Ethiopian national Abenezer Tilahyn, was denied bail after the court ruled he posed a flight risk.' The case postponed to September 2 for further investigation. 'As part of the bail conditions, the accused are required to surrender their travel documents and are prohibited from interfering with the ongoing investigation or any state witnesses.' Shumani Khwerana and his 10 co-accused face multiple charges, including cybercrime, fraud and theft. 'It is alleged that they orchestrated a sophisticated scheme involving the creation of fake Sassa profiles, through which over R4m was fraudulently deposited and withdrawn at various Sassa pay points.'
