
Mysterious Radio Signal Rising From Antarctica's Ice Baffles Scientists

Mysterious radio signals detected emanating from Antarctica's ice have left particle physicists baffled.
The pulses were detected by the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA)—an array of radio instruments flown high above the southernmost continent via air balloon.
ANTIA was designed to detect the radio waves generated when neutrinos from space hit the Antarctic ice, with the aim of learning more about distant cosmic phenomena.
In contrast, these strange new signals appear to be coming from below the horizon, a source direction that cannot be reconciled with our current understanding of particle physics.
To reach the detector, the team explained, the signal must have traveled through thousands of miles of rock first, which should have attenuated it down to nothing.
"The radio waves that we detected were at really steep angles, like 30 degrees below the surface of the ice," said paper author and physicist Stephanie Wissel.
"It's an interesting problem because we still don't actually have an explanation for what those anomalies are, but what we do know is that they're most likely not representing neutrinos."

Perhaps the most ironic aspect of this discovery is that ANITA was launched over Antarctica in part because this remote location should limit the risk of interference from other signals.
The team's analysis of the strange new signals ruled out the possibility that they were caused by neutrinos, regular cosmic rays, or other known particle-based signals.
"My guess is that some interesting radio propagation effect occurs near ice and also near the horizon that I don't fully understand," said Wissel.
"But we certainly explored several of those—and we haven't been able to find any of those yet either. So, right now it's one of those long-standing mysteries."
The researchers are currently developing the next big ultra-high energy particle detector, the Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations, or "PUEO" for short.
When PUEO launches, Wissel added, "we should pick up more anomalies, and maybe we'll actually understand what they are. We also might detect neutrinos, which would in some ways be a lot more exciting."
Neutrinos are electrically neutral elementary particles that are abundant in the universe, being emitted from high-energy sources such as stars, supernovas, and even the Big Bang.
Despite the presence of neutrino signals throughout the cosmos, they are notoriously difficult to detect. This is because these particles typically pass straight through regular matter, as they interact weakly with it via gravity and the weak nuclear force.
"You have a billion neutrinos passing through your thumbnail at any moment, but neutrinos don't really interact," Wissel explained.
"So, this is the double-edged sword problem. If we detect them, it means they have traveled all this way without interacting with anything else. We could be detecting a neutrino coming from the edge of the observable universe."
Because of this, the detection of even one neutrino offers a veritable trove of information, the researchers explained.
"We use radio detectors to try to build really, really large neutrino telescopes so that we can go after a pretty low expected event rate," said Wissel.
In the case of ANITA, the researchers are hunting for signs of a flavor of neutrino—the tau neutrino—which can interact with ice to form a "tau lepton." When tau leptons decay, they break down and produce emissions known as showers. By projecting backward from these signals, physicists are able to determine the nature of the neutrinos that triggered them.
Unfortunately, the same does not apply to the new, strange signals, however, as their angle of flight is outside that predicted by existing models.

There have been only 11 unprovoked blacktip shark bites on humans since 1959. "Blacktip sharks are very curious," Orlandini said. "They'll swim around people, but I rarely see them do anything." These sharks usually leave quickly, and her friends know they're typically safe, but Orlandini still warned them. The glare on the water can make it hard to spot these sharks. The drone footage showed her friends calmly responding to Orlandini's signal about the shark nearby. Govantes kept Kiki close to her side, placing herself in between the dog and the shark. Viewers flooded the comment section with praise for the dog owner protecting her fur baby, and as of Tuesday, the Instagram video reached over 1.1 million views and 25,800 likes "Props to the girl, she was ready to fight that shark for her dog," said one user. Another added: "She protected her dog. What a woman." While using her drone is a fun side hobby for Orlandini, she stressed how they can be ... "Drones can be our friends and can help us," she said, suggesting the integration of a warning system from those flying drones to people in the water or to lifeguards. Orlandini said lifeguards are great at warning those in the water about dangers; however, some people are out when they are not on duty. Swimmers going at their own risk are often unable to see what a drone captures. But she believes a communication system between those flying the drones and those in the water can minimize the risk. Scientists Reveal Healthiest Way of Drinking Coffee

This is the conclusion of a new study out of Tufts University, which found that this apparent benefit of coffee vanishes as cream, milk and sugar are added. "Coffee is among the most-consumed beverages in the world," said paper author and epidemiologist Fang Fang Zhang in a statement. "With nearly half of American adults reporting drinking at least one cup per day, it is important for us to know what it might mean for health." "The health benefits of coffee might be attributable to its bioactive compounds, but our results suggest that the addition of sugar and saturated fat may reduce the mortality benefits." Getty Images In their study, Zhang and colleagues analyzed health and diet data on a nationally-representative sample of 46,000 adults collected between 1999 and 2018. They linked this dataset to mortality data from the National Death Index to explore how different ways of taking one's coffee might affect one's risk of an early death. Specifically, the team categorized coffee consumption based on whether the drink was caffeinated or decaffeinated; taken with or without various forms of sugar; and whether it was drunk with or without milk, cream or half-and-half. The researchers also looked at how much sugar or saturated fats, respectively, were added to the subjects' coffee—with low added sugar (whether as granulated sugar, honey or syrup) and saturated fats being each classified as under 5 percent of the Daily Value. So, for example, this would be less than half a teaspoon of sugar and either give tablespoons of 2 percent milk or one tablespoon of either cream or half-and-half. The analyses indicated that consumption of at least one cup of caffeinated coffee per day was associated with a 16 percent lower risk of all-cause mortality—a figure that rose to 17 percent when 2–3 cups were consumed daily. Drinking more beyond this was not linked to further increases—in fact, drinking more than three cups a day appeared to weaken the benefit as concerned death from cardiovascular disease in particular. Moreover, the team found that the apparent health benefits of coffee were diminished when things were added to coffee. All-in-all, drinking black coffee and coffee with low levels of added sugar and saturated fat was associated with a 14 percent reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality, as compared to those people who didn't drink coffee. But that same link was not observed for coffee with high amounts of either added sugar or saturated fat. Paper author and nutrition epidemiologist Bingjie Zhou added: "Our results align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend limiting added sugar and saturated fat." Although the findings are likely to delight regular coffee drinkers, the study has some limitations—including how the data was based on people self-reporting how much coffee they drank, as well as how they took it. The team also noted that they did not find an association between the drinking of decaffeinated coffee and the risk of an early death—but cautioned that such might just be an artefact of how few of the subjects drank decaf. 'Razor Throat': Nimbus COVID Symptoms To Watch For As New Variant Rises
