‘Bay Saver' conservation technology to potentially be installed along West Beach Drive

Yahoo11-03-2025

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – Panama City officials are introducing new technology to improve their environmental conservation efforts.
The vortex hydrodynamic separators, or what officials are calling Bay Savers, should help clean our waterways. After the stormwater is filtered through the funnel, the Bay Saver's 'teeth' are what trap and prevent the sediment, debris and pollutants from entering the bay.
'It's over 80% effective. So, there's still some sediment that makes it through, but the majority of the sediment is captured. Obviously, the more rain you get, the more active these are and the more often they have to be cleaned out,' Panama City Director of Public Works Clint Murphy said.
Harrison Streetscape Project construction to be accelerated
A vac truck will periodically clean the tanks when they're full. There are already 35 of these located throughout Panama City, and this initiative would install 17 more along West Beach Drive.
However, the project will only proceed if the beach drive multi-use pathway is approved.
'We're not just doing a sidewalk project or a multi-use project. This is greater than that; we're doing many more improvements to the environment than what you'd see on the surface. Actually, when it's installed, it is installed upright. So, you have a 12-foot facility underground. The only thing you'll see of this is a manhole in a drainage inlet. So, we're not just doing the bay saver installations, we're doing a turn-down curve, which will help with erosion and prevent future environmental problems there,' Panama City Assistant City Manager Jared Jones said.
The pathway is on the April 22nd ballot as a non-binding referendum, meaning the commissioners will have the final say.
Officials say the Bay Savers project is nearly ready to go out for bid, pending approval from commissioners.
The $8 million bay saver initiative will be funded with state grant money. If you'd like to see what it looks like in person, there's a display in the city hall rotunda.
