National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOC Kenya) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Joins African Energy Week (AEW) 2025 Ahead of Inaugural Oil and Gas Licensing Round
Leparan Gideon ole Morintat, CEO and Managing Director of the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOC Kenya), will speak at this year's edition of the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference – taking place September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town. During the event, Morintat will share insight into the company's growth strategy in the country, highlighting frontier oil and gas prospects and opportunities for global investors. Morintat will also participate in the event's first-ever National Oil Company (NOC) and International Oil Company (IOC) Forum, which brings together key public and private sector stakeholders into direct conversation to drive investment and deals in Africa. Morintat's participation comes ahead of the country's inaugural oil and gas licensing round, which is set to launch in September 2025. Offering ten exploration blocks to investors, the licensing round aligns with national objectives of unlocking the frontier potential of the country's oil and gas sector. The ten blocks were selected using geoscientific data to ensure a transparent allocation process. The government – through the NOC - provides comprehensive seismic surveys and geological reports, thereby supporting exploration and future discoveries. As the head of the country's NOC with a participating interest in all acreage, Morintat will detail opportunities available in the round at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025. AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit for more information about this exciting event. The upcoming oil and gas licensing round aims to drive investment in the country's Lamu and Anza basins. Known for their hydrocarbon potential, the basins offer significant opportunities for frontier explorers. NOC Kenya manages all of the data for the basins through the National Data center, including geoscientific data, seismic surveys and well-logs. The blocks are available via Production Sharing Contracts and offer tax incentives to entice participation. Currently, NOC Kenya is developing a Seismic Processing Center and Geochemical-Petrophysical Analyais Laboratory, aimed at supporting future oil and gas campaigns. To further entice investment, Kenya introduced a Petroleum Act in 2019, offering a comprehensive framework for the exploration, development and management of the country's petroleum resources. Key provisions in the act include a transparent revenue-sharing model; stringent environmental protection measures; and streamlined licensing processes. The act served to offer a much-needed boost to the country's oil and gas sector, which has long-faced project delays due to regulatory challenges. By providing a transparent framework, Kenya seeks to boost investment while facilitating greater collaboration between the NOC and global operators. At AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025, Morintat is expected to outline the impact the Petroleum Act has had on the sector. Through his participation in panels and the NOC-IOC Forum, he is also anticipated to share insight into the country's investment prospects. 'Kenya is putting all the right measures in place to attract investment and fuel oil and gas development. By assessing the challenges that have plagued the industry, implementing mechanisms to address them and aligning industry policies with global standards, the country is supporting greater investment by foreign operators. NOC Kenya plays an instrumental part in driving oil and gas development in the country and has emerged as a strong partner for global firms,' stated Tomás Gerbasio, VP Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber. Sonatrach Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to Spotlight Algeria's Energy Investment Boom at Africa Energy Week (AEW) 2025
Africa Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Invest in African Energies is proud to announce the participation of Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach, as a speaker during the high-level NOC-IOC Forum. Representing one of Africa's most strategic national oil companies and a key player in global energy markets, Hachichi will provide critical insights into Algeria's dynamic investment landscape, Sonatrach's ambitious growth strategy, and the company's evolving partnerships with global energy majors. Sonatrach is at the forefront of Algeria's push to expand its hydrocarbon output and attract foreign capital. The company has continued to secure high-value partnerships, most recently signing an $850-million hydrocarbon development and exploration contract with China's Sinopec, aimed at boosting production in the Zarzaitine oilfield. Additionally, Sonatrach has revived operations at the Alrar gas complex, a key development for meeting both domestic demand and export obligations. In 2024, Algeria made eight new hydrocarbon discoveries and has targeted daily production of 1.2 million barrels by 2025, driven by enhanced oil recovery and the launch of a new licensing round. Hachichi is expected to spotlight how Sonatrach is capitalizing on these developments to strengthen Algeria's position as Africa's leading LNG producer and a top-three gas supplier to Europe, while leveraging its geographical advantage and robust infrastructure. With a view toward sustainable energy, Sonatrach is also making inroads into green hydrogen development. The company recently hosted a delegation from Spanish energy firm Enagás to discuss collaborative projects aimed at supplying Europe's growing demand for clean hydrogen. As Algeria positions itself to provide 10% of Europe's green hydrogen by 2040, Sonatrach's participation at AEW 2025 will underscore the NOC's integral role in this emerging sector. Moreover, Sonatrach continues to drive energy diplomacy and regional partnerships, such as the recent long-term gas supply agreement with Slovenia's Geoplin, reinforcing Algeria's reliability as a supplier amidst global market shifts. 'Sonatrach is not only advancing Algeria's position as an energy powerhouse, but also sending a clear message to global investors: Algeria is open for business. Their participation at AEW 2025 will be instrumental in showcasing the strategic partnerships, ambitious upstream developments and energy diversification efforts that are redefining investment opportunities across North Africa,' said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. With Algeria allocating $50 billion through 2027 – 71% of which is earmarked for exploration and production – Sonatrach is opening up new avenues for international investment, backed by a series of regulatory reforms offering more attractive terms for foreign partners. As international energy companies intensify their presence in Algeria, AEW 2025 will host discussions on how Sonatrach is forging a path toward greater energy security, investment diversification and sustainable growth. AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. 'A Mission, Not a Job!' - African Development Bank President reflects on a decade of leadership
Speaking Monday at a breakfast meeting with journalists, the President of the African Development Bank Group ( Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, described his ten-year presidency as a consuming yet profoundly fulfilling mission. The press briefing is the first official event of the Bank's 2025 Annual Meetings, taking place in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire from 26 to 30 May 2025 – during which a new president of the Bank will be elected. 'This is not a job. If anyone is looking for a job, please don't take it. This is not a job. This is a mission,' he said. 'As my wife Grace and staff would tell you, for ten years I have had no life. Completely zero. I worked every single day. Every single step.' Adesina expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the institution. 'Serving as President of the African Development Bank Group has been the greatest honor of my life,' he said. 'It has been a decade of relentless purpose, of enduring passion, and of tireless service.' The event was attended by journalists covering the Annual Meetings, which are expected to draw a record 6,000 delegates from 91 countries, including policymakers, private sector leaders, academics, civil society, development partners, and media. '[This] is one of my favorite moments of every Annual Meeting. It gives me the opportunity to speak frankly, reflect deeply, and thank you sincerely,' Adesina told the journalists , adding that the 2025 Meetings are 'the final chapter of a remarkable decade of transformation.' Delivering his remarks in English and French, Adesina reeled out the Bank's biggest achievements, including the largest capital increase in its history, from $93 billion in 2015 to $318 billion; the record replenishment of the African Development Fund, raising $8.9 billion; and the half a billion Africans who have benefited from the Bank's investments under his leadership. Adesina's presidency began in 2015 with the launch of the 'High 5s' development priorities: Light Up and Power Africa, Feed Africa, Industrialize Africa, Integrate Africa, and Improve the Quality of Life for the People of Africa. Ten years on, those priorities have made a profound impact. 'The High 5s have impacted on the lives of over 565 million people across Africa,' Adesina said. 'These are not just figures. They are futures. They are hopes realized.' He expressed his gratitude to the media for their support over the past decade, and for their presence at the last annual meetings under his headship. 'Your role is more important than ever,' he said. 'You are not just observers. You are amplifiers of Africa's voice. You shape the narrative. You challenge us. You inform the world.' Echoing his keynote remarks from the All-Africa Media Leaders' Summit in May 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, Adesina called for the emergence of African media platforms that will credibly amplify positive continental narratives on a global scale. Looking ahead, Adesina expressed pride in the transformation of the Bank during his tenure, and its enhanced global stature. 'The African Development Bank you have today is not the African Development Bank you used to have. This is a global institution now.' he said. Asked what advice he would offer his successor, Adesina responded, 'The responsibility of that leader is to build on the past, to look far into the future, and to find within themselves what courage it takes to stand up for Africa's interests. To make sure that Africa's voice is never silenced on issues that matter globally and where it matters globally.' Reflecting on the forthcoming transition, and the institution he will hand over on September 1, 2025, Adesina declared, 'Leadership may change, but the mission remains. The Bank's direction is clear, its resolve strong, and its commitment to Africa's development unshakable.' Distributed by APO Group on behalf of African Development Bank Group (AfDB).
