Liverpool legend Gerrard has seemingly dropped out of the race after rejecting an approach to make a sensational return to his former club.
Ancelotti and Martin are understood to be the leading contenders as things stand.
However, SunSport understands another manager has now joined the race, with former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli the latest gaffer to hold discussions with the Light Blues board.
The 36-year-old is currently a free agent after he resigned from the Eredivisie giants following their dramatic title collapse which saw PSV Eindhoven clinch the title on the final day.
Ajax threw away a nine point lead in the final few games which allowed Malik Tillman and Co to make it two-in-a-row following a last day shootout against Sparta Rotterdam.
Emotional Farioli quit following the major disappointment and technical director Alex Kroes branded his departure "incredibly disappointing".
It's understood the Italian was one of the managers considered by Light Blues chiefs before they appointed Michael Beale.
The Ibrox club have been long-time admirers of the young manager and it's said they've made a fresh approach.
The former Nice and Alanyaspor gaffer has also been linked with Atalanta and Roma.
Farioli recently revealed what he expects from his next move after a difference of opinion with the Ajax board.

'There's a lot of speculation, a lot of rumours,' he said.
'But I do want to get back into coaching. Just like it was with Ajax, I don't care about the brand or the size of the club.
"What matters to me is how things are done, and last summer Ajax was exactly what I was looking for.
'It was the right step for my career, and now we'll see what comes next. We'll see if and when that opportunity arrives.
'I'm a very demanding person. Before I join a club, I lay all my strengths and weaknesses on the table. 'Demanding' is probably the best word to describe me.
"I want to find a club that's willing to fight alongside me.'

Rangers are facing a battle to hang on to one of their key players this summer after transfer interest from the English Premier League emerged over the weekend. Everton are believed to have 'identified' 23-year-old midfielder Mohamed Diomande for transfer after his impressive season at Ibrox, with to a new report from the Daily Express claiming the Toffees have 'serious intent to drive up the table' after ending last season strongly following the return of Scottish head coach David Moyes. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad With the club set to enter a new era in their new 52,000 seater stadium, Everton are targeting reinforcements in central midfield, with Abdoulaye Doucoure departing upon the expiration of his contract, while Orel Mangala is also returning to Lyon following his season-long loan spell with the Blues. This has led them to eye up a potential offer for Ivorian midfielder Diomande, with the Rangers star targeted after he provided 12 goal contributions in all competitions last season, while it is understood Everton are also attracted by the player's versatility in the centre of the park. The Merseyside outfit are thought to also be interested in strengthening their options at right-back and right-wing, with the club hoping to tie up deals as early as possible during the summer transfer window, potential leaving ex-Rangers academy product Nathan Patterson in limbo over his future. Rangers, who are set to enter a new era themselves following the recent take over from Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, will be reluctant to lose the Ivory Coast international who has been a key figure for the club since joining from Nordsjaelland in January 2024. Originally signing for the club on loan, Diomande joined the Light Blues permanently last summer in a deal worth a reported £4.3million. With major changes expected at the club this summer, Thelwell's first job will be to come to a conclusion on his preferred managerial candidate alongside new club chairman Cavenagh, with a decision likely to be made this week.

UEFA to make Champions League rule change that could impact Celtic and Rangers
European football's governing body are reportedly set to make a change to the format next season Celtic played their part in the revamped Champions League and are looking to return - with rivals Rangers hoping to join them. And if the Glasgow giants succeed in getting through their respective qualifying routes they could encounter yet another change. Just one year on from the new-look premier competition which saw 36 teams complete in a league phase, European football's governing body are reportedly set to tweak it. And it stems from a gripe Arsenal had last season where teams weren't rewarded for finishing higher in the league from the quarter finals onwards. Teams who finished in the top eight and qualified directly for the round of 16 were drawn against lower ranked teams at home in the second leg - but there was no reward in the last eight or semi-finals. That meant that despite finishing well above Real Madrid and PSG in the League Phase standings, Mikel Arteta's men still had to play both second legs of the quarter-final and semi-final away from home. Had UEFA reseeded per round or awarded home-leg advantage to the higher-ranked team, Arsenal would have hosted both return legs. But home advantage was decided by random draw due to UEFA's preference for an 'open draw'. Arsenal weren't the only club to fall foul of the 'open' draw system: Barcelona at home for the first leg of their quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund, despite finishing second in the league phase. But German publication Bild report that teams that secure a spot within the top eight league positions - and qualifying automatically for the knockout phase - will reap benefits not only in the round of 16 but also in the quarter-finals of the tournament. The UEFA Club Competitions Committee met and reportedly agreed on the proposed change before the Champions League final – and final approval is now 'considered a formality'. Other changes were also considered, including proceeding directly to penalty shoot-outs instead of extra time and preventing two clubs from the same nation from facing off until the competition's later stages. No consensus was reached on those ideas, though. Celtic will enter the Champions at the play-off round stage while rivals Rangers must negotiate three qualifiers if they are to dine at European football's top table.
