Alcaraz stops Shelton and returns to French Open quarter-finals
PARIS, June 1 (Reuters) - Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz etched his name deeper in clay by overcoming American Ben Shelton 7-6(8) 6-3 4-6 6-4 for his 100th tour-level win on the surface to reach the French Open quarter-finals for a fourth successive year on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Spaniard endured a shaky outing against Damir Dzumhur in his last match and was dragged into a dogfight by big-serving Shelton on Court Philippe Chatrier before he pulled away to book a meeting with another American in Tommy Paul.
"Today I fought against myself, in my mind," said Alcaraz.
"I tried to calm myself as I was mad, angry and talking not really good things. I'm really happy not to let those thoughts play against me. I tried to calm myself and keep going."
Alcaraz missed his only breakpoint opportunity in the first 12 games and clawed back from 1-4 down in the tiebreak before he saved three set points to clinch an entertaining opening stanza when Shelton sent a shot into the net.
The second seed's serve came under immense pressure in a 12-minute opening game of the second set, but he staved off Shelton six times to hold, and edged in front with forehand thunderbolts that forced his opponent into mistakes.
Shelton persevered and took a 3-1 lead in the third set but allowed Alcaraz back into the game, only to regain composure and pull a set back to give himself a chance to secure the biggest victory of his career.
It was not to be as Alcaraz wrested complete control in the fourth set and quelled the challenge of the 13th seed, finishing him off on serve with a booming forehand on his second matchpoint to let out a roar.
"We both have huge respect for each other," added Alcaraz.
"Every time we face each other, we bring a high level and play good tennis. He's a really powerful player and can make any shot ... he's an unbelievable player.
"We played complete tennis, big shots, coming to the net, big forehands ... We stayed there during the whole match. For me, it's great having him around, it's a great energy."

Four big decisions Sarina Wiegman must make this week
England's game against Spain on Tuesday is the last chance for players to state their case for a place on the plane to this summer's Women's European Championship. There are a number of key questions Sarina Wiegman must answer before she names her 23-player squad on Thursday. There are fitness concerns over certain members of the squad, while a lack of experience may count against other players battling for a place in the team. Telegraph Sport looks at the four big decisions Wiegman must make before she names the squad who will try to successfully defend England's European title in Switzerland next month. Lauren James gamble The biggest question mark hanging over the England squad is whether Lauren James will be fit. James is a unique player and undoubtedly a match-winner. On her day, she can be one of the best players in the world, but she has been hampered by injuries in the last couple of years. The Chelsea forward has not played since picking up a hamstring injury in the Lionesses' 5-0 victory over Belgium in April and previously spent three months out with a calf injury between October and January. Wiegman previously said she would be willing to take a risk on one player who may not be fully fit when she names her squad, but only one. She has indicated she is confident James will be ready. 'We're trying to get her fit,' Wiegman said. 'She's trying to get fit with all the support from Chelsea and us. She is doing really well. She needs to tick some boxes and progress. We need her to be fit and healthy and perform at her highest level.' Defensive cover England have struggled to play a settled back four throughout 2025 because of injuries and form. Millie Bright would ordinarily be one of the first names in the Euros squad, but the defender withdrew from this camp because of physical and mental fatigue. Wiegman was unable to give any assurances that Bright will be ready for the tournament, but it would be a big shock if her name was not one of the 23 on the squad list on Thursday. The likes of Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood and Jess Carter are all expected to be in the squad. The fact Esme Morgan started alongside Williamson against Portugal would indicate her place in the squad is probably assured, which leaves Maya Le Tissier, Niamh Charles and Lotte Wubben-Moy battling it out for the remaining places. Manchester United captain Le Tissier was one of the best performers in the Women's Super League but has struggled for game time with England because Wiegman sees her as a right-back, when she plays centre-back at club level. Asked about Le Tissier on Monday, Wiegman said: 'I think she can play both positions. With Manchester United she plays centre-back, for us she plays mainly as a right full-back. That is the position I see her, but I understand she can play centre-back, too.' Charles, meanwhile, was at one point considered the first-choice left-back, but seems to have fallen down the pecking order after Wiegman started Carter in that position against Portugal. Wubben-Moy missed a lot of the domestic season with Arsenal because of injuries and was a late call-up to the squad after Bright's withdrawal. She has, however, been to the last two major tournaments and would bring a positive influence to the dressing room. Goalkeeping experience The retirement of Mary Earps has left the Lionesses with a lack of experience in the goalkeeping department. Hannah Hampton is now the undisputed No 1 but the two goalkeepers behind her, Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse, are both uncapped. Wiegman was asked last week about the possibility of recalling Ellie Roebuck, who was part of the Euro 2022 and 2023 World Cup squads, but the goalkeeper has had limited game time after recovering from a stroke. The England manager seemed to indicate she was satisfied with both Moorhouse and Keating's experience of high-level club games, while Bronze added on Monday: 'We have fantastic goalkeepers here and Mary has left such a great legacy that means they're all in a great position, that they're all prepared because they had such a great mentor in the past number of years to learn from.' Is there room for a wild card? Squads are capped at 23 players, so it will be hard for some of the new faces to force their way into the squad. Michelle Agyemang, who scored 41 seconds into her debut in April, is the obvious candidate should Wiegman opt for a 'wild card'. Agyemang would bring the element of surprise, given opposition teams would know less about her because of her lack of senior-level experience, and going to a major tournament at a young age would also be beneficial for her development. The forward, who spent last season on loan at Brighton from Arsenal, was an unused substitute against Portugal and so will be desperate for even a couple of minutes against Spain to state her case. Both she and the more experienced Nikita Parris could be possible standby options if they miss out on the squad. Agyemang is also eligible to play in the Under-19s Euros this summer, but Uefa rules state she cannot play in that tournament as well as the senior competition. OPENING UP Before quitting Celebs Go Dating The Sun revealed that Christine was open to dating 'both men and women' CHRISTINE McGuinness has revealed how she has dated girls since she was a teenager. Christine, 37, who was married to TV presenter Paddy McGuinness for 11 years, also stated that her "sexuality is not a secret". 5 The busy mum-of-three, who split from Paddy in 2022, has opened up about previous relationships she has had with women. She also revealed how her family and her ex-husband have always been aware of her sexuality. Speaking on the How To Fail podcast, Christine said: "It shouldn't matter somebody's gender. It never mattered to me, which was why once me and my ex-husband were separated and I met people, I didn't properly date 'It was more like blurred the lines of friendships for me, that was normal. "It felt comfortable because I'd done that as a teenager and I, as a teenager, I dated both men and women. "My ex-husband knew. My family knew. It was never a secret for me.' When asked if she has a label for her sexuality, Christine said considers herself a "free spirit'. Explaining more to the podcast host Elizabeth Day, she said: "I've thought about it. A lot of people always ask me, are you a lesbian? Are you bisexual? Are you what? Is this a phase? "I've always been quite a free spirit. I think that's the only word I would put on it. "When I was a teenager, I'd dated boys and girls. 14/15 was probably when I had my first kisses with, with both, and I never felt it was anything different or a big deal. Asked about her past relationships with women, Christine revealed: "My longest was two years before I met my ex-husband and then I've had really, really lovely long situation shifts where we purposely haven't put a label on anything', she added. "But my experiences with women have been lovely and It's not like women are better or worse. "It's simply that the connection for me is different. I need a connection now. The star had jetted off to Ibiza, and had already started filming with fellow celebrities like Kerry Katona, when she walked away. In a statement, Christine said: ' I joined Celebs Go Dating with great intentions but have realised that dating on a public platform and the attention that brings is just too soon for me. 'They've said the door is always open for me, which I'm so grateful for, but for now I'm returning home to my family.' A Celebs Go Dating spokesperson added: 'We have loved having Christine on the show and completely respect her feelings and decision to return home and have told her that the door is always open for her in the future at the agency.' Celebs Go Dating's resident sexpert Dr Tara Suwinyattichaiporn spoke to The Sun after Christine's exit. She told us: 'Her situation outside of the show is very complex so we will focus on helping her gain clarity about what she wants to do moving forward and build confidence in dating again.
