KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) commemorated a significant milestone as it celebrated its 23rd anniversary by welcoming the 130 millionth passenger on its KLIA Ekspres service, underscoring its continued commitment to delivering fast, reliable and comfortable airport rail services since 2002.
In a statement, ERL said the celebration was held at KL Sentral yesterday and the lucky passenger was Nagwa Kamal from Indonesia, who is currently in Kuala Lumpur for a holiday.
'The 130 millionth passenger was identified based on projected ridership data, and the winner won a special prize package sponsored by our esteemed partners,' the statement read.
The package included a one-night stay in the Executive Deluxe Room at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, a night tour for two on the Hop-On Hop-Off KL City of Lights, admission for two to the observation deck and buffet lunch at Orbit Restaurant in Menara Kuala Lumpur, a one-way KLIA Ekspres VIP Service for two, an exclusive KLIA Ekspres train model and other merchandise.
'I was genuinely surprised and never imagined I would be the 130 millionth passenger on the KLIA Ekspres. It's a special moment for me, especially as this is the first time I've brought my eldest son along. I can't help but feel he brought us a bit of luck today,' said Nagwa.
In conjunction with the celebration, ERL also presented its 13,000th KLIA Transit passenger of the day to Siti Azieyatul Elliya Azian, a student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Kampus Bandaraya Melaka.
She received prizes including four standard one-way KLIA Ekspres tickets, a one-night stay in Capri by Fraser at Bukit Bintang, Hop-On Hop-Off KL City of Lights night tour for two, admission for two to the observation deck and buffet lunch at Orbit Restaurant in Menara Kuala Lumpur, an exclusive KLIA Ekspres train model and other merchandise.
For Siti Azieyatul Elliya, she never thought today's commute would make her the 13,000th passenger of KLIA Transit.
'I usually take KLIA Transit when I'm back for semester break because it's convenient and comfortable. I would like to thank the management of ERL for this wonderful surprise,' she said.

China rolls out special Asean visa for 10 South-East Asian countries and also adds Timor Leste in list

SOUTH-EAST ASIA (Bernama): China has rolled out an Asean Visa for the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and Asean observer Timor-Leste, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The ministry's spokesperson, Lin Jian, said this new programme offers five-year multiple-entry visas to eligible applicants visiting China for business purposes and their spouses as well as children, granting a maximum stay of 180 days. "For anyone with more specific questions on visas to China, they are welcome to contact our diplomatic and consular missions in their countries,' he said in a statement today. He said the initiative was to further facilitate cross-border travels in the region, on top of the visa-free arrangement between China and countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and China's 'Lancang-Mekong visas' programme for Mekong countries. In recent years, he noted that China and Asean have advanced the building of a community with a shared future. "Visits between the people of China and Southeast Asian countries have been frequent. "There is a mutual hope to further ease travel between the two sides,' he pointed out. He also said that the growing 'visa-free list' shows China's firm resolve in expanding high-level opening up. "The various measures China has taken to ease cross-border travel are all part of China's concrete action to create an open global economy,' he explained. Adding to the proof, Lin said in the first quarter of this year, China received over nine million visits by foreigners, up by over 40 per cent year-on-year. "And in the first four months, more than 18,000 foreign-invested companies were established in China, up by 12.1 per cent year-on-year,' he said. He further said that China will continue to improve entry policies and add more countries to the visa-free list. "China is committed to greater openness and deeper cooperation for shared prosperity with the rest of the world,' he added. - Bernama

Operational readiness as millions arrive for Hajj

Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: An official spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Services - Hajj Season, Saleh Ibrahim Al-Zuwaid, said over 45,000 personnel have been deployed within the transport and logistics network to ensure smooth operations during the pilgrimage. - Bernama pic MAKKAH: Saudi Arabia has signalled its operational readiness for the Hajj pilgrimage season. The kingdom has rolled out an integrated set of logistical, technological, and digital initiatives aimed at improving safety, comfort, and efficiency for pilgrims arriving from around the world. An official spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Services - Hajj Season, Saleh Ibrahim Al-Zuwaid, said over 45,000 personnel have been deployed within the transport and logistics network to ensure smooth operations during the pilgrimage. 'Our teams continue to work round-the-clock to ensure pilgrims receive the highest quality of service,' said Al-Zuwaid at a press briefing Monday. 'We urge all pilgrims to comply with official guidelines and instructions issued by the authorities to ensure everyone's safety and wellbeing throughout the Hajj journey.' As part of efforts to ease congestion and streamline pilgrim movement, the Haramain High-Speed Railway has scheduled 4,700 trips throughout the Hajj season. The network is expected to accommodate up to two million passengers, an increase of 400,000 seats compared to the previous year. Additionally, the 'No-Baggage Hajj' initiative is now in place for pilgrims arriving via King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. Under this programme, pilgrims travel directly to Makkah by train while their luggage is transported separately to their accommodation via a coordinated logistics system. 'The separation of passenger and baggage movement allows for faster processing at arrival points and ensures that pilgrims can focus on their rituals with minimal disruption,' said the official. Saudi authorities have also confirmed the full implementation of the second phase of operational plans supported by specialised technical teams. These efforts are being intensified during the Eid al-Adha holiday, traditionally one of the busiest periods of the Hajj season. 'Our operational strategy has accompanied the arrival of pilgrims through multiple entry points and helped facilitate a seamless experience,' he said. Meanwhile, an official spokesperson for the Communications and Technology Ecosystem - Hajj Season, Saad Saleem Al-Shanbari, reported major improvements in digital infrastructure across the holy sites, with 4G and 5G coverage in Makkah, Madinah, and surrounding areas surpassing expectations. Internet speeds have reached 264 Mbps in Makkah and 336 Mbps in Madinah, allowing pilgrims to stay connected with ease. 'Digital infrastructure plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall experience, from navigation and communication to access to real-time information,' he said. As part of the digital push, the kingdom has trialled a range of technologies, including AI-powered crowd management systems, advanced surveillance cameras, and secure communication tools in collaboration with security agencies. The Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) said out of 29 new technologies introduced this year, 13 had already proven successful in previous seasons. These include tools designed to manage health-related services and monitor pilgrim movement. Responding to the challenge of combating extreme heat, Saudi authorities have activated road-cooling technologies along pedestrian routes that reduce surface temperatures and improve walking conditions for pilgrims. Preliminary results from temperature-monitoring sensors have shown a measurable decrease in heat levels on cooled pathways,' said the spokesperson. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? School holidays bring opportunities to local economy in Johor

JOHOR BAHRU: The school holidays since May 29, which brought joy to students and families, are a boon for hawkers, homestay operators and local communities around tourist hotspots in the state. A Bernama survey of several popular locations including the Johor Bahru City Square, Johor Zoo and the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) City Forest found that the presence of domestic tourists has increased sharply since the start of the holidays, thus providing a surge in income for street food vendors, souvenir vendors and homestay operators. Food vendor Halimah Abu Bakar, 48, said her sales during the school holiday season increased by 50 per cent following the increase in the number of customers at her stall. 'On weekdays, we receive around 100 customers, but during the holiday season, the number increases to 150 a day. Most of the customers are from other states and Singapore. 'Although we have to open our stall early and return late at night, the effort is worth it because the daily income increased almost three times compared to normal days,' she said when met by Bernama at her stall located around Hutan Bandar MBJB here today. Meanwhile, ice cream vendor Hasimi Md Isa, 41, said the school holiday season is like the 'harvest season' that he has been waiting for. 'During this school holiday, my ice cream sales can reach more than RM50 a day compared to RM30 a day. This school holiday is indeed a much-anticipated moment for local hawkers following the increase in the number of tourists coming to the state,' he said. The presence of tourists from outside Johor, such as Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Pahang, also contributes to the increase in local economic activities, especially homestay operators around the hotspots. Homestay operator Suraya Abd Majid, 38, said all units advertised on digital platforms had been booked a week before the holiday began, showing high demand for affordable accommodation outside the countryside. 'Many families also choose to stay in homestays because they can cook and save money. Homestays are also a choice because their facilities are more family-friendly. 'For this school holiday season alone, my homestay in Kempas has been fully booked until June 7. In fact, I have often received calls from people wanting to book a homestay within two to three days recently,' she said when contacted by Bernama. On May 29, the media reported that Johor Unity, Heritage and Culture Exco, K. Raven Kumar, announced that 80 per cent of hotel room reservations in tourist hotspots in Johor had been filled in conjunction with the first term school holidays. The school holidays are expected to end on June 10, and local traders, hawkers and homestay operators hope that this momentum can continue ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026.
