Del Toro takes it easy during 18th stage of Giro as Denz wins with solo breakaway
CESANO MADERNO, Italy (AP) — Overall leader Isaac Del Toro had a chance to take it relatively easy during the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Thursday, which was won by German rider Nico Denz with a solo breakaway.
Del Toro, the first Mexican rider to wear the pink jersey, finished safely in the main pack following the 144-kilometer (89-mile) route from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno, which featured three minor climbs early on before a relatively flat finale.
It will likely be much tougher for the 21-year-old Del Toro the next two days, with grueling back-to-back mountain stages before
the mostly ceremonial finish in Rome
on Sunday.
For now, Del Toro maintained his advantage of 41 seconds ahead of 2019 champion Richard Carapaz and 51 seconds ahead of British rider Simon Yates.
Juan Ayuso, Del Toro's UAE Emirates teammate, abandoned the race early on in the stage after struggling for days. Considered a pre-race favorite, Ayuso stood 26th, nearly 50 minutes behind Del Toro, and was battling through knee pain and a bee sting.
'Obviously this is not how I wanted my Giro to end but some things are out of my control,' Ayuso said in a team statement. 'I wish the guys all the best and hope Isaac can keep pink all the way to Rome.'
It was the third victory at the Giro in Denz's career, having also won two stages in 2023.
The next two stages are both rated with five stars for maximum difficulty.
Stage 19 on Friday is a 166-kilometer (103-mile) leg from Biella to Champoluc that features five climbs before a short descent into the finish.
Then Saturday's penultimate stage is a 205-kilometer (127-mile) leg from Verres to Sestriere that features the beyond-category climb on a gravel road to Colle delle Finestre — where
Chris Froome's audacious attack in 2018 earned him the title

Not so Coco Gauff, who is just fine with competing at any time of day. Indeed, the 2023 U.S. Open champion prefers a morning match time to what she referred to as 'the graveyard shift' — and at Grand Slam tournaments, there often are contests that stretch past midnight. So at the French Open, Gauff probably didn't mind when she saw she was scheduled to face Australian Open champ Madison Keys at 11 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET) in an all-American quarterfinal Wednesday. 'I'm one of those players that doesn't care,' said Gauff, a 21-year-old from Florida who is the No. 2 seed in Paris. 'I can get up early. I'm not slow to wake up. Once I get some food in me, I'm pretty much good.' Tennis is an all-day sport at Grand Slam tournaments like the French Open Tennis is an all-day sport, especially at its Grand Slam tournaments, where ticket sales and TV contracts bring in millions and drive decision-making by organizers. The French Open, U.S. Open and Australian Open all have night sessions that can stretch to 2 or 3 a.m.; Wimbledon has an 11 p.m. curfew. 'You know when you're going to go on. There's no chaos. You go to bed at a totally normal time. I feel like I've lived my night-owl life, and I would really love to be that first-on slot for the rest of time.' Other than the initial matches on each court in the morning and at night, it is impossible to know when to warm up and ramp up. Tennis isn't a timed sport, so it's anyone's guess when, say, a day's third or fourth match in a given arena will begin — and as the temperature and weather shifts across the hours, the clay at the French Open can shift, too. Daily schedules often are released in the late afternoon or evening prior, and while players can make requests, those aren't always accepted. Waking up at 6 a.m. can be a struggle for tennis players 'That's one thing that's not good about tennis: We don't know when we play until the day before,' said Holger Rune, who was the No. 10 men's seed at the French Open and reached the fourth round. In team sports, he continued, 'They know already in December when they're going to play in May. You can prepare much easier. We tennis players also (deal with) the change of conditions, the change of countries, surface, whatever." When he was a teen participating in junior tournaments, Rune recalled, there were 9 a.m. matches. 'You have to wake up at 6,' the Dane said. 'It's a struggle.' Emma Navarro, an American who reached last year's U.S. Open semifinals, is not fond of competing late. 'I'm super particular, I guess would be the word, about my sleep. I got to get my sleep in. I try to get 10 hours a night. If it's dark outside, I'm probably sleeping,' Navarro said. 'I'd prefer, probably, to play first-on than late-night. Around 8 or 9 p.m., I start shutting down.' Goalie Flekken leaves Brentford for Bayer Leverkusen in pursuit of Champions League glory
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen completed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford on Tuesday. The Netherlands international signed a three-year deal until June 30, 2028, for an undisclosed fee. 'Mark Flekken possesses a wide range of skills that a goalkeeper in modern top-flight football needs," Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said. "He has strong reflexes, good control of the penalty area, and, thanks to his height of 1.95 meters, has tremendous reach. "Mark exudes an impressive physical presence; from a footballing perspective, he has certainly been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the past two years.' The 31-year-old Flekken spent two years at Brentford, making 77 appearances for the Premier League club. 'We were expecting Mark to be our goalkeeper for many more years, however when Bayer Leverkusen made it known that they wanted to do this transfer, and Mark made it clear that he was interested in moving closer to home and with a possibility of Champions League football, we turned our attention towards how all parties could make this happen," Brentford director of football Phil Giles said. Flekken previously played in Germany with Duisburg and Freiburg, but has the chance to compete for the biggest titles with the 2024 Bundesliga champion, which has just hired former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as its new coach. Sara Errani to play padel event in Rome following French Open tennis
ROME (AP) — Former French Open finalist Sara Errani is going to trade in her tennis racket for a padel immediately after Roland-Garros. Errani was granted a wild card on Tuesday to play in Premier Padel's Italy Major at the Foro Italico next week. The 38-year-old Errani will pair with 20-year-old Giulia Dal Pozzo. Errani has advanced to the semifinals in both women's doubles (with Jasmine Paolini) and mixed doubles (with Andrea Vavasssori) in Paris. She and Paolini also won gold in doubles at the Paris Olympics and have won two consecutive titles at the Italian Open, which is also contested at the Foro Italico. Errani has said she plans to move full time into padel when her tennis career is finished. When she lost in qualifying at the French Open, she said that was her final singles match in tennis. But she plans to continue playing doubles with Paolini. Errani lost the 2012 French Open singles final to Maria Sharapova. ___
