Fund for fixing 'extremely dangerous' Calderdale roads praised
Millions of pounds set to be spent on repairing roads has been welcomed by a councillor who says his car tyres have been left damaged by potholes.Calderdale Council is set to spend £15m on repairing more than 500 roads over the next two years.Councillor Paul Bellenger said the funding news was "absolutely fantastic" and described some roads in the region as "extremely dangerous".Bellenger said he had been approached by residents about vehicles damaged by poor road conditions and had himself submitted a claim over damage to his vehicle.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the cash from the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) scheme will be spent on roads and other highway infrastructure.
About £12m of the funding is expected to be spent on carriageway resurfacing, road reconstruction and repairing walls and bridges.In April, an investment of nearly £125m to improve roads in the region was agreed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority.Speaking at a council meeting, the Liberal Democrat councillor said: "I have three roads that are extremely dangerous to the point where [I've] had to put in a claim for damage to my tyre."It's about safety – ensuring that our roads are safe for our constituents to drive on."He added he hoped the cash would be spent "fairly and widely" throughout the whole borough, not just "some" parts of it.

Three Leeds United players raced a Red Bull Formula One car after challenging the driver to a battle at Elland Road. The club are still riding the credit of a wave after securing promotion back to the Premier League after two years away, winning the Championship on goal difference ahead of Burnley. Daniel Farke 's side reached 100 points to secure a return to the top flight, and their celebrations continued in rather bizarre fashion - with three of the club's players racing one of the fastest cars on the planet. Willy Gnonto, Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt raced the car, driven by Formula Two driver Arvid Lindblad in a drag race from one penalty box to another. After a slow start from the car as it struggled to pick up grip, it eventually prevailed in a race that included the vehicle turning 180 degrees and winning by around 30 yards. It proved, if there was any doubt, that a racing car is indeed faster than some of the quickest players, but provided some light entertainment from the club and its minority owners. The only thing better would be getting in the car. 'I love Formula One. I went to the Monaco Grand Prix last week, which was a bucket list moment for me. I used to play Formula One games on the console when I was younger, so it was surreal to be next to a real car and race against it. 'Before the race I was scared, but I was confident too. I think we did great, but in the end the car was just too quick. 'I think one of the players involved in this idea was Dan James. Unfortunately, he's been injured, but I'd back my team-mate over that car any day. DJ would smoke this car.' Lindblad said: 'Ahead of the race I was a bit nervous. I'd never driven on grass and had no idea how it would go – only Red Bull would make something like this happen. 'The car has a ton of horsepower and there is not much grip on grass, so I wasn't sure if I could go full throttle and turn the car properly. It was great fun to challenge my skills and compete against footballers rather than other drivers.'

The budget electric car is expected to cost around £12,500. After launching in China, Nio sold 3,680 Firefly models last month, boosting the brand's overall sales by a whopping 13.1 per cent. Reports suggest that the Firefly will be available in UK showrooms imminently, according to Autocar. Qin Lihong, Nio's president, revealed that it would launch a right-hand-drive variant for the UK by October. The Chinese car brand is rapidly expanding across Europe, aiming to enter 16 new global markets this year. It comes after an ultra-ambitious car maker revealed a new budget E V that some claim could rival Tesla. Little-known Chinese manufacturer Nio is to release a sub-brand called Firefly - which will offer entry-level electric vehicles. Spy shots have revealed the brand testing a small city-style hatchback, which is tipped to be showcased to the world on December 21 for their so-called Nio Day in Guangzhou, China. Known for their advanced technology and innovative features, Nio is a relatively new EV startup - established in 2014 and adopting its current name in 2016. Their first mass-produced car was the ES8, an all-electric SUV, which began sales in June 2018. Nio also has a family-oriented brand called Onvo, with Onvo L60 the only model currently available for sale under that name. The new Firefly marque will sit at the bottom of their tier of brands and will focus on small and mid-size EVs. Automotive outlet CarScoops first revealed the motor back in March, and new photos they obtained revealed it will look like a typical hatchback in size with a short front and rear overhang - resembling the five-door Mini Cooper and BYD Dolphin. Photos of the Firefly's interior have also been published by IT Home and CarNewsChina. Judging by these, it appears it will feature a large central infotainment screen along with a digital instrument cluster - all despite its budget-orientated appeal. Little else is known about the new hatchback, and it will initially be launched in China before it comes to Europe - although tariff hikes will likely make it pricier than originally planned. The release of the Firefly could certainly give Tesla something to think about in the future.
