Baseball: Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani set for pitching return Monday

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani will return as a pitcher Tuesday by starting against the San Diego Padres, the Major League Baseball club said.
The Dodgers posted the news on their X account Sunday, meaning Ohtani will pitch in an MLB game for the first time since August 2023. Right elbow surgery in the following month has kept him off the mound since.
Ohtani last Tuesday had his third live batting practice since the surgery, striking out six while throwing three simulated innings in a promising 44-pitch outing.
His was initially expected to return as a pitcher after the All-Star break, but a string of injuries to the Dodgers' bullpen is set to see the date brought forward significantly.
Ohtani is expected to pitch short innings against the Padres at Dodger Stadium.
He had a strong outing as a batter on Sunday, going 3-for-3 all with singles and scoring two runs in a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants.
Prior to the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani was "getting very eager, getting very excited" about his pitching return.
"I think that there's a point where, in hearing from Shohei, that the effort that it takes to throw lives and things like that, (rather) than to play a game, then let's use those bullets in a game," he said according to MLB.com.
The skipper, meanwhile, said there is no time frame for a return of rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement in mid-May.
Sasaki resumed playing catch in late May but Roberts said his shoulder seemingly remains some way off peak condition.
"Whatever we get from him, and expecting him to be back, obviously, and contributing," he said. "But I think the mindset should be we got to plan on life without him, as far as this year."
Yusei Kikuchi (2-6) fanned 10 but was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits over 5-2/3 innings in the Los Angeles Angels' 11-2 defeat against the Baltimore Orioles.

Football: Veteran Urawa keeper says defense key against River Plate

KYODO NEWS - 22 minutes ago - 17:54 | Sports, All Japan's Urawa Reds will be ready to soak up defensive pressure against Argentine heavyweights River Plate in their first match of the Club World Cup, veteran goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa said Sunday. The two teams are set to meet in the opening Group E encounter at Seattle's Lumen Field on Tuesday. "We're bracing to be kept on the back foot, but if we hold firm in defense, we'll definitely have a chance," Nishikawa said during an online interview. Urawa qualified for the revamped Club World Cup by winning the 2022-23 Asian Champions League, having reached the continental club competition via their 2021 Emperor's Cup triumph. "The story started four years ago. We got here thanks to various events falling into place," said Nishikawa, who turns 39 on Wednesday. Urawa face a tall task advancing from a group also featuring Italian giants Inter Milan and Mexico's Monterrey, but Nishikawa says they will head into the group opener with high aspirations. "I want to enjoy it to the fullest, with a sense of pride and responsibility," he said. Ohtani to return to pitching on Monday after elbow surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers say Ohtani Shohei will return to pitching in Major League baseball on Monday. The Japanese two-way player had to pause his pitching for nearly two years due to elbow surgery. The Dodgers announced on social media on Sunday that Ohtani will be the starting pitcher in a game against the San Diego Padres. It will be the first of a four-game series at the Dodgers' home stadium in Los Angeles. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says Ohtani will likely pitch in one inning and will also be on the batting lineup. This will be Ohtani's pitching debut for the Dodgers. The last time he played as a pitcher and batter was one year and 10 months ago, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels. The game on August 23, 2023, was against the Cincinnati Reds. Later that year, Ohtani had a second operation on his right elbow to repair a torn ligament. He has continued his pitching rehabilitation during the current season while playing as a designated hitter. Ohtani threw 44 pitches across three simulated innings in a rehabilitation session last Tuesday.

Ohtani likely to make mound return this week against Padres

Los Angeles Dodgers' pitcher Shohei Ohtani throws live batting practice as pitching coach Mark Prior, second from left, watches prior to a baseball game against the New York Yankees in Los Angeles on May 31. baseball By MIKE DiGIOVANNA Shohei Ohtani is likely to return to a major league mound this week for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Diego Padres, 21 months after the two-way star had elbow surgery, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts made the announcement after Sunday night's 5-4 win over San Francisco. 'I don't know which day he's going to open for us, but there's a high probability he's going to open for us in the coming days,' Roberts was quoted as saying by the Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles hosts San Diego in a four-game series starting Monday. Asked whether Ohtani would pitch against the Padres, Roberts said, 'most likely,' the Times reported. Ohtani has not pitched in a game since Aug 23, 2023, when he got hurt during a start for the Los Angeles Angels against Cincinnati. He had Tommy John surgery on Oct 1, 2018, and is recovering from right elbow surgery on Sept 19, 2023. In the second season of a $700 million, 10-year contract, he paused his pitching work after a mound session on Feb 25 to prepare for opening day as a hitter, then started bullpen sessions on March 29 and batting practice on March 25. A three-time MVP, Ohtani is hitting .297 with an NL-leading 1.035 OPS, 25 homers and 41 RBIs. (through June 15). A batter only last year in his first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani hit .290 with 54 homers, 130 RBIs and 59 stolen bases. On Sunday, Roberts said rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki appears likely to be sidelined for a lengthy stretch. With Sasaki (right shoulder impingement), Blake Snell (left shoulder inflammation) and Tyler Glasnow (right shoulder inflammation) on the injured list, the Dodgers have resorted to bullpen games. Sasaki has not pitched in a game since May 9 and is not part of the team's long-term pitching plans this season. 'I think that's what the mindset should be,' Roberts said before the game. "Being thrust into this environment certainly was a big undertaking for him, and now you layer in the health part and the fact he's a starting pitcher, knowing what the build-up (required to return) entails … I think that's the prudent way to go about it.' Sasaki, 23, went 1-1 with a 4.72 ERA in eight starts after joining the Dodgers from the Pacific League's Chiba Lotte Marines, ,averaging less than 4 1/3 innings per start. His walked 22 and struck out 24 in 34 1/3 innings and his fastball averaged 95.7 mph, down 3-4 mph from his average in Japan. Roberts said Sasaki was pain-free when he resumed throwing in early June, but the pitcher was shut down after feeling discomfort this past week. Sasaki recently received a cortisone injection in the shoulder; Roberts said no further scans are planned. 'I don't think it's pain,' Roberts said. 'I don't know if it's discomfort, if it's tightness, if he's just not feeling strong, whatever the adjective you want to use. That's more of a question for Roki, as far as the sensation he's feeling. 'He's just not feeling like he can ramp it up, and we're not going to push him to do something he doesn't feel good about right now.' © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
