Capitals coach Spencer Carbery claims Jack Adams Award
June 7 - Spencer Carbery of the Washington Capitals was named the winner of the 2024-25 Jack Adams Award on Saturday.
The honor is presented to the NHL coach who is judged to have made the biggest contribution to a team's success.
While attending what he thought was a season-ending interview, the 43-year-old Carbery was presented with the award by his wife, Casey, and their children, Hudson and Vivian.
.
"Wow, I had no idea," a clearly stunned and choked-up Carbery said.
If that weren't emotional enough for Carbery, extended family members from throughout the U.S. and Canada also were there to share in the moment.
Carbery led the Capitals to a 51-22-9 (111 points) record this season as the team finished first in the Eastern Conference in his second season as Washington's coach. He becomes the fourth coach in franchise history to win the award, joining Bryan Murray (1983-84), Bruce Boudreau (2007-08) and Barry Trotz (2015-16).
He is also the first person recognized as coach of the year in the ECHL, AHL and NHL.
The members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association select the Jack Adams winner.
Carbery received 81 first-place votes on the 103 ballots cast and finished with 464 points. Scott Arniel of the Winnipeg Jets had 249 points, followed by Martin St. Louis of the Montreal Canadiens with 66.
The Capitals lost in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes in five games.

Mural honoring MLB legends Jackie Robinson and Minnie Minoso vandalized with sickening racist message
Murals honoring beloved baseball trailblazers Jackie Robinson and Minnie Miñoso were defaced with swastikas and hateful racist slurs in Miami this week. Local police say the incident was reported Monday in at Dorsey Park in Overtown, a predominantly black area northwest of Downtown Miami. The Athletic has reported that the vandalism is being investigated as a hate crime. Swastikas were painted over the murals' faces, with a racist slur written across Robinson's. The murals were originally painted by artist Kyle Holbrook in 2011 as part of Martin Luther King project in the city. 'This was an act of hate, but it will not define us,' Holbrook told the Miami Herald. 'This mural was born from a community's pride, history, and power. We will restore it -- stronger, bolder, and with even more purpose. Black history is American history. And no spray paint can erase that truth.' Born in Cuba in 1924, Miñoso was a breakout star with the Negro leagues' New York Cubans before becoming the first Afro-Latino player in Major League Baseball history. He'd go on to earn nine All-Star appearances, three gold gloves in left field, and have his No. 9 retired by the Chicago White Sox. He died in 2015 – seven years before his posthumous induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Robinson arrived in the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers a year before Miñoso in 1947 to breaking baseball's color barrier and helping to reinvigorate America's civil rights movement. Remembered as an icon of integration, Robinson's exploits as a player are often overshadowed by his other contributions to society. But in addition to being an extraordinary running back at UCLA, Robinson would win the 1947 Rookie of the year in Brooklyn before taking MVP honors and the National League batting title two years later. His No. 42 is retired throughout baseball, outside of Jackie Robinson day when it's worn by both the American and National Leagues. Robinson was inducted into Cooperstown in 1962. US congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (Democrat, Florida) has called the vandalism a 'vile act of hatred' in a statement Wednesday. 'We must treat this for what it is: a hate crime meant to instill fear and division,' she said. 'But we will not be intimidated. We will respond with unity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and the preservation of our history.' A similar incident took place in Wichita, Kansas in 2024 when a Robinson statue was stolen, burned and destroyed. In 2024, 45-year-old Ricky Alderete was arrested for the crime. Police say he intended to sell the metal for scrap. Ultimately Alderete got 18 months for theft in August of 2024.

Aaron Rodgers signs with Pittsburgh Steelers to end free agency odyssey
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers' ended his long-running free agency saga as the polarizing four-times NFL MVP launched a new chapter of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday. The team posted on social media a photo of Rodgers wearing a Steelers hat with a pen in his hand and a smile on his face two days after reports of the first broke. 'Done deal,' the photo caption said. The one-year contract is for $13.65m, which includes $10m guaranteed and has a maximum value of $19.5m, ESPN reported on Saturday, citing sources. The deal is pending a physical, the team said. Rodgers will hold a press conference on Tuesday after minicamp practice. Months of speculation gave way to frustrated impatience from fans seeking any clue to his future following Rodgers' acrimonious split from the New York Jets almost four months ago. The 41-year-old left the team after a turbulent two-year-tenure that began with a torn achilles tendon and ended with a clumsily concealed behind-the-scenes spat with owner Woody Johnson. Analysts laid out a few possible destinations for the twice NFL passing touchdown leader but as teams recruited talent in free agency and at April's Draft, the odds Rodgers would play again appeared to dwindle with each passing day. NFL experts and insiders indicated last week that the Steelers were no closer to sealing the deal. 'We've heard Art Rooney, the Steelers owner, say they expect that Rodgers will eventually sign. But here we are, June 4, nothing but silence,' ESPN's Adam Schefter said. But Rodgers, once criticised for misleading fans and reporters about his Covid-19 vaccination status, again confounded expectations on Thursday, as news broke he would join the Steelers on a one-year deal. Rodgers produced a solid 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns across 17 games last season, but some experts are skeptical. 'It's a joke. What are you going to do? Bring him in just for a year? He should stay [at home] in California,' four-times Super Bowl winner-turned-broadcaster Terry Bradshaw said on his 'Morning Mayhem' radio show last week. Once the face of Green Bay during his 18 seasons with the Packers, Rodgers hoisted the Lombardi Trophy with the team in 2011 and will come face-to-face with them again – playing for the team they beat in the Super Bowl – in Week 8. He will open the season against the Jets.

Seiya Suzuki hits 2 HRs as Cubs power past Tigers
June 7 - Seiya Suzuki led a five-homer barrage with a pair of solo shots as the visiting Chicago Cubs powered past the Detroit Tigers 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. Suzuki smacked his 15th and 16th homers in support of Jameson Taillon (6-3), who posted his fourth consecutive victory and fifth straight quality start. Taillon allowed one run and three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in seven innings. Taillon has allowed just five runs during his winning streak in a span of 26 2/3 innings. Michael Busch hit a two-run homer, while Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw added solo blasts. All but two of Chicago's hits were home runs after the Cubs were held to one run in the series opener. Zach McKinstry had a triple and scored the lone run for Detroit. Keider Montero gave up four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Suzuki's two-out homer to left in the first off Tyler Holton (2-3), who was used as an opener, gave the Cubs an early advantage. Nico Hoerner led off the fifth inning for the Cubs with an infield single and Busch smashed his two-run shot, estimated at 414 feet, over the right-field wall for his 10th homer. Detroit got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. McKinstry pulled a triple down the right-field line and scored on Jake Rogers' fielder's choice grounder. Chicago lengthened its lead in the seventh when Crow-Armstrong lofted an 0-1 curveball from Montero over the right field wall for his 17th homer. Three batters later, Shaw smoked a 2-1 Montero slider over the left field fence to make it 5-1. Suzuki's second homer of the day came off Chase Lee in the eighth inning. Detroit had two baserunners on in the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't push another run across. --Field Level Media
