In a landmark moment, the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune saw its first cohort of 17 women cadets graduate on Friday, alongside more than 300 male cadets. This marks the successful completion of the NDA's inaugural co-educational batch.
The cadets passed through the symbolic 'Antim Pag' at the Khetrpal Parade Ground, a key ceremonial tradition at the tri-service training academy, often referred to as the cradle of military leadership.
These women cadets were admitted to the NDA's 148th course in 2022 after a Supreme Court directive in 2021 led the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to open applications to female candidates.

Adityanath urges BJP leaders to amplify Modi govt's 11-year achievements
Themed '11 Years of Service, Good Governance and Poor Welfare ('seva, sushashan aur gareeb kalyan ke 11 varsh)', the event began with floral tributes to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, the UP government said in a statement. Addressing a state-level workshop organised in Lucknow on the completion of 11 years of the Modi government, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that it is the good fortune of the nation to have the impactful leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Amrit Kaal of independence. Lucknow, Jun 3 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday urged BJP workers to take the achievements of the central government to every citizen. Urging party workers to focus on grassroots engagement, the chief minister said it is everyone's responsibility to communicate the government's 11 years of achievements at the booth level. He called for connecting all sections and organisations with the campaign and highlighting success stories of beneficiaries. Adityanath said that the 11 years of Modi government's performance form the foundation for realizing the vision of a developed India. 'Workers must play an active role in disseminating these achievements at the state, district, mandal, and Shakti Kendra levels,' he said. He encouraged workers not to limit the campaign to the party cadre, but to engage with the general public, professional groups, and direct beneficiaries. Citing recent by-elections, he said that coordinated meetings of party departments and cells had proved effective. BJP's six morchas and 22-23 cells represent every segment of society, including lawyers, doctors, teachers, students, and beneficiaries. Organising meetings with these groups and selecting speakers from among them would ensure effective outreach, he said. Highlighting the success of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, Adityanath said that where once illness became a crisis for families, today over 50 crore people in India, including 10 crore in Uttar Pradesh, are covered under the scheme. Through the Ayushman Bharat Vay Vandana Yojana, senior citizens above the age of 70 receive free health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh, without any discrimination. Speaking on progress in healthcare, he said that prior to 2014, India had only one AIIMS. While Atal Bihari Vajpayee established six AIIMS, the Modi government has added 22 more, including two in Uttar Pradesh. The 'One District, One Medical College' vision has made institutions a reality in remote districts such as Maharajganj, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Mirzapur, providing both healthcare access and employment. He urged workers to proudly promote these achievements and counter misinformation from the opposition. He said that PM Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister to restore Ayodhya's glory. He urged workers to actively participate in programmes like the Tiranga Yatra, Ahilyabai Holkar anniversary, and International Yoga Day. He also called on BJP workers to participate in the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign and River Rejuvenation Programme on World Environment Day (June 5). Adityanath concluded by stating that Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of the double-engine government, is reaching new heights of development. CAQM directs Delhi-NCR govts to assess landfill fire risk
New Delhi The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Tuesday directed the Delhi-NCR state governments to carry out a fire-risk assessment of sanitary landfills and dump sites, following proper identification, categorisation, and demarcation of waste. It directed them to adopt preventive measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras and methane gas detectors, to prevent future landfill fires, as it could lead to a spike in particulate matter and release harmful gases such as NO2, SO2, CO, dioxins and furans. The pollution body also asked agencies to carry out extensive biomining or bioremediation at landfills to liquidate the legacy waste, as per the targeted timelines already submitted to the Supreme Court. 'Ensure adequate storage of sand or chemical fire extinguishing means for immediate action, whenever initiation of fire is sensed, besides dedicated fire tenders and other fire safety measures, specifically during the summer season, which is more prone to SLF and dump site fires,' said CAQM, adding periodic mock drills were needed to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The CAQM said municipal solid waste needed to be collected, segregated and processed in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and directed states to adopt zero tolerance towards open waste burning. Co-firing of paddy straw pellets beyond NCR: CAQM In a specific directive to districts outside NCR, the CAQM asked brick kilns to co-fire paddy straw-based pellets, setting a deadline of co-firing 50% of such pellets by November 1, 2028. The deadline is 20% co-firing of paddy straw-based pellets by November 1, 2025, and 30% by November 1, 2026, it said. The initiative aims to power such facilities, rather than relying on thermal plants. 'The state Governments of Punjab and Haryana have been instructed to issue requisite directions in this context mandating the above stipulation for use of paddy straw-based bio-mass pellets or briquettes in brick kilns located in non-NCR areas,' CAQM said in a statement, adding action taken in compliance with these directions will be apprised to the commission every month.

Supreme Court seeks Telangana's response to petition on local quota in MBBS admissions
Hyderabad: The Supreme Court has directed the Telangana govt to file its response to a petition regarding the local quota in MBBS admissions in the state. The court issued these directions on Monday while hearing petitions filed by a few aspirants who urged to be accommodated in the counselling under the local quota. The matter was posted for further hearing in four weeks. The aspirants were challenging the state govt's orders amending the local quota provisions. A bench of Justices Prashanth Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih, while directing all parties to file their responses by the next date of hearing, also allowed the aspirants to mention their case during the partial court work during the vacation in case of any urgency. The bench provided this relaxation when the aspirants claimed that counselling for MBBS admissions would start immediately after the results are declared on June 14. During the hearing, the aspirants claimed that they were born in Telangana and that their parents were also born in the state. The petition challenges the Telangana Medical and Dental Colleges Admission (Admission into MBBS & BDS Courses) Rules, 2017, as amended in 2024. According to the amended rule, students seeking admission to Telangana medical colleges must have studied in the state for four consecutive years before taking their qualifying exam. The petitioners claimed that despite being born in Telangana and having completed most of their education in the state, the applicants became ineligible because they studied classes 11 and 12, or Intermediate, outside the state. They also claimed that the govt passed the amendment after the academic year had started, at a time when they had already been admitted to courses outside the state. When the Supreme Court advised applicants to approach the high court for redress, they argued that the high court could not rule on the matter as their case was now before the Supreme Court.
