Air India crash triggers delays as airspace closures, Dreamliner checks disrupt global flight schedules

Time of India4 hours ago

The fallout from the
Air India crash
in Ahmedabad is disrupting flight operations across continents, with widespread delays, cancellations and mounting passenger frustration. A storm of airspace closures, regulatory inspections, and air traffic congestion is paralysing routes between India, the Middle East, and Europe.
With Iranian airspace closed, Jordanian airspace has also been shut to commercial flights, forcing airlines to reroute and adding nearly an hour to westbound journeys. Air India, already grappling with operational strain, is now facing a double blow: extended flying hours and mandatory checks on its fleet of
Boeing
787 Dreamliners.

"AI is in the process of completing the one-time safety checks directed by DGCA. These are being carried out on the Boeing 787 fleet as they return to India, before being cleared for their next operations... Some of these checks could lead to higher turnaround time and potential delays," the airline said. As of Sunday evening, inspections had been completed on 22 of its 33 Dreamliners.
These enhanced checks, ordered by India's aviation regulator, come as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) heightens oversight following the crash. The impact on operations is already visible, Sunday's Delhi-Paris flight was cancelled, and the Sydney service was unable to take off. Both routes depend on the
Dreamliner
fleet.

But the delays aren't limited to Air India. Dubai's air traffic control is facing unprecedented congestion as it takes on rerouted traffic from closed air corridors, similar to the pressure typically handled by Mumbai's ATC. Flights between India and the UAE have suffered over the weekend, with those from northern India experiencing more severe disruptions than southern routes.

'We have to board passengers on time so we do not miss our departure slot at Dubai. Then there's often a long wait to get take-off clearance, which is not a comfortable experience for passengers on board aircraft on a very hot tarmac at this time of the year. The home airline (Emirates) understandably gets preferential treatment at its hub,' an airline source said, reported TOI.
SpiceJet
acknowledged on Sunday that it was "experiencing massive air traffic control congestion at Dubai." Other regional carriers, including Sharjah-based Air Arabia, have also been impacted, as passenger complaints flood social media.
Dubai Airports issued a public advisory to manage expectations: "Some flights at Dubai International (DXB) and DWC (Al Maktoum, Dubai's second airport) are cancelled or delayed due to airspace closures over parts of the region. Please check with your airline for the latest updates..."
What began as a tragedy in Ahmedabad has now spiralled into a full-blown operational crisis. With critical air corridors sealed and fleets grounded for checks, airlines are struggling to maintain schedules, leaving flyers stranded, fuming, and unsure of what lies ahead.

UK Man Who Skipped Ill-Fated Air India Flight Talks About Seat 11A And "Weird Coincidence"

This is nothing short of a miracle. A man in the UK, who was meant to be onboard the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad, is alive today because his plan changed at the last moment. Owen Jackson, from Saffron Walden in Essex, is not just thanking his stars, he is "shocked" and "grateful" for the life-saving decision. The plane crashed into a college hostel seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, killing hundreds, including passengers, crew members and medical students in the hostel. Out of 242 on board the Air India flight, one passenger - Vishwas Kumar Ramesh - miraculously survived. He was sitting on seat number 11A. Speaking to UK-based The Sun, Jackson claimed he was also scheduled to board the same flight, but his plan changed due to unfinished work, forcing him to book Saturday tickets on what would have been the same aircraft if the accident hadn't taken place. In a "weird coincidence", he further claimed that the seat allotted to him for Saturday's flight was 11A - now being touted as the safest. "My main emotion on the whole thing is I'm quite grateful for the fact that I made that decision when I did," Jackson told The Sun. "It's a shock. I'm more grateful than anything else - it is such a weird coincidence," the 31-year-old further said, adding that his wife was not aware of his change of plans. This is 31 year old Owen Jackson from Saffron Walden. He'd been working in India and had been booked to come home on the Air India flight that crashed on Thursday. But work over ran so he changed his flight to Saturday & came home safely. In seat 11A. — Gyll King Post Skip Diplomacy (@GyllKing) June 16, 2025 His wife, Phillipa, was left worried after the news broke as she was not aware if Jackson had boarded the flight or not. Calling the tragedy "awful", she said, "The way we felt is nothing compared to how the victims and their families are actually feeling." How Vishwash Kumar Ramesh's life was saved When the plane crashed on Thursday, it broke apart with impact, causing a massive fire aided by highly inflammable jet fuel. The 40-year-old told the media that when he opened his eyes, everything was burning, but he managed to squeeze through the broken hatch. He sustained injuries and received treatment in the hospital. Some families of victims are still waiting to take possession of their loved ones' remains after DNA profiling and other identification of bodies.

"We must now deliver on promises of development and ensure Delhi gets what it rightfully deserves": Union Minister Hardeep Puri

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday hailed the 11 years of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and called for action on the development and growth of Delhi . He further stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , India's Gross Domestic Product had increased from two trillion dollars to four trillion dollars. "With PM Modi's 11 years of governance and the support of local bodies, we have no excuses left. We must now deliver on the promises of development and ensure Delhi gets what it rightfully deserves. When PM Modi took charge in 2014, India's GDP was 2 trillion dollars. Today, it has reached 4 trillion dollars," Puri said, speaking to the media. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Chuck Norris: If You're Over 60, Avoid These 3 Foods Like The Plague Roundhouse Provisions Learn More He further stated that the results of the triple-engine government could be seen at the Centre, Delhi and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi . Puri also stated that he was a witness to Delhi's evolution after partition, further stating that after successive waves of migration, the population in the city had finally crossed two crores. Live Events "I've seen Delhi evolve since just after partition, when the city's population was around 11-12 lakh. After successive waves of migration, the population has now crossed over 2 crore. You can see the results of the triple-engine government we now have--at the Centre, in Delhi, and in the MCD ," he added. Earlier on June 14, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said that India is firmly on track to become the world's third-largest economy by 2029, crediting 11 years of Narendra Modi's "decisive and corruption-free governance" for triggering what he described as an "unstoppable surge" in national development. Addressing a press conference in Dibrugadh to mark the NDA government's 11th anniversary, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister said that India has emerged from an era of "policy paralysis and dynastic politics" and is now driven by welfare-led growth, youth-powered innovation, and massive infrastructure expansion. "In just one decade, over 25 crore Indians have risen above poverty. That's more than the population of most European countries," Sonowal said. "This is the Modi guarantee -- delivery with speed, scale and honesty." Highlighting the economic strides under the Modi government, Sarbananda Sonowal said India's rise to the fourth-largest global economy is just the beginning. "By 2029, India will be the third-largest economy. We're building the foundation for a Viksit Bharat -- a developed, self-reliant India." Sonowal cited the rise of India's startup ecosystem -- from 30,000 in 2014 to over 1 lakh today -- as evidence of the country's changing mindset. "This is a new India, led by young dreamers and doers. Over 1.7 crore youth are now part of this vibrant startup movement."
