Indian Railways to now prepare reservation charts 8 hours before train departure
New Delhi: In a major move to enhance passenger convenience, Indian Railways on Sunday announced that it has decided to prepare the reservation chart 8 hours before the train's departure, instead of the current practice of 4 hours.
This change is aimed at reducing the uncertainty faced by passengers, especially those with waitlisted tickets.
The decision was taken after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the progress of reforms in the ticket booking system.
He stressed that the entire ticketing experience should be smart, transparent, and efficient, keeping passenger convenience at the centre.
As per the new plan, for trains that depart before 2 p.m., the reservation chart will be prepared the night before at 9 p.m.
This change will be implemented in a phased manner to ensure a smooth transition without any disruption.
The move will especially benefit passengers coming from remote areas or the suburbs of big cities, as they will now get more time to check their ticket status and make alternative travel arrangements if needed.
Passengers with waitlist tickets will get early updates on their ticket confirmation status, making their travel plans more predictable.
Along with this, Indian Railways is also working on upgrading its Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which is expected to be completed by December 2025.
The new PRS is being developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and will be capable of handling ten times the current load.
Once implemented, it will allow booking of over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute and handle more than 40 lakh ticket enquiries per minute.
The upgraded PRS will offer a user-friendly and multilingual interface, with new features such as fare calendars, seat preference options, and integrated support for Divyangjan, students, and patients.
Additionally, starting from July 1, only authenticated users will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and mobile app.
By the end of July, Tatkal bookings will require OTP-based authentication using Aadhaar or any other verified government ID linked to the user's DigiLocker.

"We Do Not Fear Terrorists": Amarnath Pilgrims Opt For Pahalgam Route
Jammu: Defying apprehensions of the horrific April 22 terror Pahalgam attack casting a shadow on the Amarnath Yatra this year, hundreds of pilgrims from various parts of the country lined up at the registration centre here on the first day. "Bullets and bombs cannot stop us from having Baba Barfani's darshan," said Mumbai resident Devakar Kadam, who will embark on his 11th pilgrimage to the cave shrine this time. The Saraswati Dham registration centre, near the Jammu railway station, saw an unusual rush on the first day of the registration, and many present there described the increasing footfall as a befitting reply to Pakistan-backed terrorists who shot dead 26 people, mostly tourists, in Pahalgam after religious profiling. As pilgrims waited to get tokens amid chants of "Bam Bam Bole" and "Jai Baba Barfani", several of them said they were undertaking the pilgrimage to Amarnath from the Pahalgam route as a homage to those who lost their lives in the April 22 terror attack. "We are very enthusiastic. Our group of 26 members is extremely happy, and we want to be part of the first batch to have the darshan of Amarnath ji. We have no fear. "No matter what happens, the enthusiasm of people across the country for the Amarnath Yatra cannot be diminished. Everyone will come and have darshan," said Kadam. The 38-day pilgrimage to the cave shrine of Amarnath located at an altitude of 3,880 metres in the South Kashmir Himalayas will commence on July 3 via the twin tracks- the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district that is shorter but steeper. Authorities have made elaborate security arrangements for the Yatra. The first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from the Jammu-based Bhagwati Nagar base camp on July 2. Another group member, Mumta Deshmukh, said they arrived late last night and had been standing in the queue since early morning to get tokens for on-the-spot registration. "This time, it is not only a pilgrimage for Baba Barfani's darshan but also to pay tribute to those killed in Pahalgam by terrorists. "By undertaking the yatra from Pahalgam, we are sending a message to terrorists - that we do not fear them," she said. Kadam said it was their 11th pilgrimage. "We will never stop or bow down to such attacks. Even if bullets are fired or bombs explode, we will surely have Baba's darshan. We do not fear them. We pledge that we will continue to be in the first batch of every future yatra as well." Sarita Ghosh of Kolkata, who is on the pilgrimage along with a group of 95 people, said that compared to previous years, the enthusiasm among devotees is greater. "This clearly shows that people are giving a befitting reply to those trying to spread fear. I believe that compared to last year, twice the number of people will come this time - and fear will be defeated," she said. Ghosh said that all of them had decided to take the Pahalgam route, especially in the wake of the terror attack. "It will be our tribute to those who died there - this will be our pledge against terrorism," she said. Nirohotum Kumar from Assam said the terror attack cannot deter them from undertaking the pilgrimage. "What happened in Pahalgam was tragic, but it cannot scare us. We are going to Baba with full faith. This is our yearly commitment. No one can instill fear of death in us." He said people should come in large numbers. "This will also boost the morale of our soldiers," he said. Bighirath Sharma of Surat, part of a 30-member group including 25 from Kashi, said, "Do you see any fear among the people here? At least 30,000 people are standing here today just to collect tokens - and this is only the first day." "Such a huge crowd from all over the country is proof that no one is scared. In fact, this is a strong reply to terrorists - that we will not be afraid, we will not back down," Sharma said. A large number of pilgrims hoping to undertake the Yatra had to return disappointed from Saraswati Dham after failing to get tokens for on-the-spot registration to travel in the first batch for darshan of the ice lingam of Lord Shiva. Joginder Singh of Uttar Pradesh, who waited in line for four hours along with his group of eight, said, "We felt deeply hurt at not getting tokens today. We wanted to start our Yatra from day one and have Baba's darshan." He criticised the limited quota of 2,000 tokens fixed for the day. "We waited in line for four hours but still didn't receive a token. A large number of people came today, and only 2,000 tokens were issued." He said the government should issue tokens for the next day as well, so people don't have to wait in lines repeatedly. Some of those who waited for hours only to be told that the daily quota had ended raised slogans and were involved in scuffles with the police personnel deployed there. Surendra Singh from Punjab said that it was unfair that even after waiting for five hours, they didn't receive a token for registration. "The government should issue quotas for the second and third day to those already standing in line so that people don't have to return," he said Three registration centres - Vaishnavi Dham, Panchayat Bhawan and Mahajan Hall - will start functioning in Jammu for offline registration from Tuesday. Only pilgrims having tokens issued by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board will be entertained at the registration centres, said Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manu Hansa.

Aadhaar-PAN Link, ATM Withdrawal Fees, More. Financial Changes From July 1
New Delhi: Changes to regulations governing filing of income tax returns; the use of and charges associated with credit cards; and last-minute, or Tatkal, train ticket bookings; as well as making an Aadhaar card mandatory for new PAN applications, are among those that will come into effect on July 1. These will impact individual taxpayers and customers of banks like HDFC, SBI, and ICICI. Aadhaar Needed For New PAN From Tuesday the Central Board of Direct Taxes has made Aadhaar verification mandatory for PAN card applications. Existing PAN holders must link their Aadhaar numbers by December 31. At present any valid government-issued ID, such as a driving license, and a birth certificate is enough for new PAN card applications. Non-compliance with this rule may lead to the existing PAN being deactivated. Tatkal Train TIcket Bookings Aadhaar verification will also be mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets. Also, starting July 15, two-factor authentication, which will include a one-time password that will be sent to the registered mobile phone, will be required for all ticketing, online or in-person. Meanwhile, the Railways is also expected to implement a minor increase in ticket prices. This hike may range from 1 paisa per km for non-AC coaches to two paise for AC coaches. ITR Filing Deadline Meanwhile, the CBDT has also extended the ITR, or Income Tax Returns, filing deadline from July 31 to September 15. This gives salaried individuals an additional 46 days to complete filings. However, those whose documentation is ready can stick to the older schedule and, therefore, avoid possible website glitches and errors that usually crop up as the deadline nears and people rush to complete ITR filing. Credit Card Changes SBI is discontinuing its air accident insurance offered when using select premium cards, such as SBI Elite, Miles Elite, and Miles Prime, to purchase air tickets. The public sector bank is also expected to introduce a new minimum amount due or MAD (for monthly bills) calculation. HDFC and ICICI Bank, meanwhile, will also revise charges on select transactions. For HDFC, a one per cent transaction fee - to be capped at Rs 4,999 per transaction - will be applied if you use your card to pay rent or spend over Rs 10,000 on online skill-based games. Utility payments - over Rs 50,000 monthly - using a HDFC card will also attract the abovementioned fee. The exception in this case is for insurance transactions. Finally, if you use the card to load over Rs 10,000 into a digital wallet in a single transaction, there will be a one per cent fee capped at Rs 4,999 per transaction. ICICI Bank 's changes will include revisions to service charges, including for ATM transactions. The first five at ICICI Bank ATMs remain free. After that you will be charged Rs 23 per transaction to withdraw cash. Non-financial transactions will continue to be free. If ICICI Bank customers use non-bank ATMs the number of free transactions is limited to three for Metro cities and five in smaller cities and towns. Beyond this you must pay Rs 23 and Rs 8.5 per transaction, respectively. For transactions on international ATMs, the bank will charge Rs 125 per cash withdrawal, Rs 25 for non-financial transactions, and a 3.5 percent currency conversion fee. Charges for online transfers, i.e., via IMPS, have been revised sharply, from Rs 2.5 to Rs 15 depending on the amount transferred. In addition, customers will get three free cash transactions per month at CRMs, or cash recycler machines, after which they must pay Rs 150 per transaction. Cash deposits over Rs 1 lakh a month will invite a fee of Rs 150, or Rs 3,50 per Rs 1,000 (whichever is higher). The limit for third-party cash deposits remains Rs 25,000 per transaction.
