US strikes set Iran's nuclear program back 'many years,' Israeli assessment finds

An Israeli assessment determined that the U.S. strikes on Iran set the country's nuclear program back "many years."
The Israel Atomic Energy Commission said that the U.S. destroyed "critical infrastructure" at the Fordow nuclear facility and rendered it "inoperable."
"The devastating U.S. strike on Fordow destroyed the site's critical infrastructure and rendered the enrichment facility inoperable. We assess that the American strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, combined with Israeli strikes on other elements of Iran's military nuclear program, have set back Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons by many years," the Israel Atomic Energy Commission said in a statement. "The achievement can continue indefinitely if Iran does not get access to nuclear material."

The Israeli assessment seemingly aligns with the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei's statement on the status of the site. According to The Associated Press, Baghaei said that the country's "nuclear installations have been badly damaged, that's for sure."
In the early hours of June 22 local time, Iran's Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities were hit. U.S. B-2 stealth bombers used 30,000-pound bunker busters on Fordow, which was Iran's main underground enrichment site.

Israel hit the site again on Monday as the country carried out strikes on roads leading to the underground facility.
The latest strike on Fordow comes as the Israel Defense Forces said Israel also launched a series of strikes targeting the notorious Evin prison and several Iranian military command centers in an "ongoing effort to degrade the Iranian regime's military capabilities."

Iran's nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, said on Tuesday that the country was assessing the damage and preparing to restore the facilities, according to Reuters. He added that Iran's "plan is to prevent interruptions in the process of production and services."
Both President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to respond if Iran rebuilds its nuclear program.

The three major indexes ended the day mixed as the Iran-Israel ceasefire held steady. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 107 points to close at 42,982. The S&P 500 stayed roughly flat, and the Nasdaq gained 61 points. US oil prices climbed slightly higher today. Even as the Israel Iran ceasefire appears fragile, analysts said as long as both countries refrain from attacking energy export infrastructure or disrupting shipping, oil prices could likely remain muted. Meanwhile, Jerome Powell returned for his second day of congressional testimony. President Trump said he's reviewing new candidates to replace the Federal Reserve Chairman once Powell's term ends in 2026. In individual companies trading today, after new car registrations for Tesla fell across the European Union signaling a steep sales decline, shares of the electric car company dropped 3.8%. Shares of FedEx dropped 3.3% after the shipping company said it expected to lose $170 million this quarter as a result of President Trump's tariffs. The administration's change in rules led to a much lower demand for packages shipped from China to the US. Rival UPS shares also fell 1.2%. And after posting better than expected quarterly results, shares of BlackBerry, the cybersecurity company, shot up 12.5%. After Donald Trump again attacked CNN and singled out correspondent Natasha Bertrand for her reporting on an early intel assessment of the Iran bombings, the network has responded by saying it stands '100% behind' her and her work. CNN was the first outlet to report on a Defense Intelligence Agency assessment that the U.S. bombing strikes on Iran Saturday likely set the country's nuclear program back only by months. The network made it clear in the story that it was a preliminary assessment. Other outlets, including The New York Times, the AP, Reuters and NBC News, followed up with similar reports. 'We stand 100% behind Natasha Bertrand's journalism and specifically her and her colleagues' reporting of the early intelligence assessment of the U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear facilities,' the news network said in a statement. 'CNN's reporting made clear that this was an initial finding that could change with additional intelligence. We have extensively covered President Trump's own deep skepticism about it. 'However, we do not believe it is reasonable to criticize CNN reporters for accurately reporting on the existence of the assessment and accurately characterizing its findings, which are in the public interest.' Trump press secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared to confirm the existence of the intelligence assessment in a statement she released on Tuesday, while taking issue with its findings. But Trump and his allies seem to be attacking CNN for merely reporting on the assessment, even claiming that such reports are demeaning the members of the military who carried out the strikes. Earlier on Wednesday, Trump wrote on Truth Social, 'Natasha Bertrand should be FIRED from CNN! I watched her for three days doing Fake News. She should be IMMEDIATELY reprimanded, and then thrown out 'like a dog.' She lied on the Laptop from Hell Story, and now she lied on the Nuclear Sites Story, attempting to destroy our Patriot Pilots by making them look bad when, in fact, they did a GREAT job and hit 'pay dirt' — TOTAL OBLITERATION! At a press conference at the NATO summit on Wednesday, Trump called on CNN's Kaitlin Collins, telling her 'you really should say how great our soliders and our warriors are.' 'I think everyone appreciates our soldiers and our warriors,' Collins said, before asking him two questions. Trump said that they have 'collected additional intelligence. We've also spoken to people who have seen the site, and the site it obliterated. And we think everything nuclear is down there. They didn't take it out.' Operation Midnight Hammer demonstrated the U.S. military's awesome power and dealt Iran's nuclear ambitions a severe setback. It also ignited a debate at home. Was the assault on Iran's nuclear facilities a betrayal or a furtherance of President Donald Trump's 'America first' agenda? Neo-isolationists argued Mr. Trump abandoned his MAGA base and predicted the immediate outbreak of a great Middle Eastern war. They were wrong on both counts. No ground war has erupted. Nor is one remotely likely. And there's clear evidence that Mr. Trump acted in accord with his domestic coalition, which seems in reality interventionist-minded.
