Wee: Don't rush SST expansion without public input
Wee stresses the need for a comprehensive assessment to determine whether people can sustain the expanded SST rates, which will take effect next month. — Bernama photo KUCHING (June 15): The government should engage in dialogue sessions with people from all sectors rather than implementing the reviewed and expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST) rates hastily, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. He stressed the need for a comprehensive assessment to determine whether people can sustain the expanded SST rates, which will take effect next month. 'Our economy is still well on its road to recovery, with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) remain struggling. Now that SST rates are to be reviewed and expanded, consumers and people at large will be suffering,' he told his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee pointed out that when the government increases SST rates, the increasing costs are eventually borne by consumers, particularly affecting those in lower-income brackets who will have to spend more to maintain their livelihoods. He urged the government to strike a balance between broadening its tax-based system and ensuring that people do not struggle to make ends meet. He cautioned that any tax reviews that could lead to 'spiral effects to the economy' must be done 'prudently and with the people's well-being at heart'. 'Is it timely to implement reviewed and expanded SST rates at this stage? Are our people prepared to face another spate of rising costs of living? Wee questioned, adding: 'You can take a stroll in the local wet markets where petty traders unanimously state that their businesses are not doing well.' According to the Mayor, while businesses with strong cash flow might manage the new SST rates, many MSMEs especially less established ones, 'may face risk of closure', potentially leading to unemployment. Wee advised the government against solely focusing on revenue-generating, urging them to consider the financial difficulties people are currently facing. 'If more and more MSMEs close down, we will be seeing more jobless persons, and unemployment can be a nasty issue. 'No doubt that we are not economists but we have been on the ground, well aware of what traders and people are being put through,' he said. As such, the Mayor expressed hope that the government will reconsider its decision to implement the reviewed and expanded SST rates next month. expanded lead reviewed Sales and Services Tax wee hong seng

RM30 million to boost media digital shift
Published on: Sunday, June 15, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 15, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: 'With this funding, along with training and exposure, especially for young journalists, we will ensure the media industry keeps pace with advancements in artificial intelligence, while maintaining a balance between AI and journalistic ethics,' Anwar said in his speech. Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an allocation of RM30 million to support media organisations in digital transformation initiatives and the adoption of new technologies for content production. The Prime Minister said the allocation aligns with efforts to strengthen the country's media ecosystem and ensure its sustainability. Advertisement 'To my recollection, this is the largest allocation ever provided by the Government for journalists since independence. 'With this funding, along with training and exposure, especially for young journalists, we will ensure the media industry keeps pace with advancements in artificial intelligence, while maintaining a balance between AI and journalistic ethics,' he said in his speech. The prestigious event brought together approximately 1,000 media practitioners from both local and international media outlets. Anwar said the initiative will be supported by targeted training and exposure, particularly for young journalists, to help them adapt and remain competitive in the evolving technological landscape. 'As an initial step, this fund will be rolled out through the Project Sigma. I truly value the quality and capabilities of our journalists. I have discussed this with the Communications Minister, and we have agreed to establish a substantial fund to ensure local media continues to stay relevant,' he said. The original Project Sigma involved only six local media organisations: Astro Awani, Malaysiakini, Sinar Daily, New Straits Times, The Star and Sin Chew Daily. Under the expanded Project Sigma 2.0, a collaboration with search engine giant Google and the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR), training and courses will be offered focusing on innovative approaches to news delivery and content creation. The initiative aims to develop fresher and more effective formats for digital content. The Project Sigma 2.0 will enable agencies under the Ministry of Communications, such as the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), the Broadcasting Department (RTM), the Information Department (JaPen) and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), along with media organisations, to gain deeper insights into information consumption patterns, as well as the needs and behaviours of Generation Z (Gen Z) audiences. Hawana 2025 is organised by the Ministry of Communications, with Bernama as the implementing agency, and supported by various media organisations and strategic industry partners. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', the prestigious event brought together 1,000 media practitioners from both local and international outlets. In a related development, Anwar also stressed the importance of ethics in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), stressing that the technology must not compromise the integrity of journalism or erode human values in society. He said technological advancements such as AI should not be viewed solely through a technical or economic lens, but must be balanced with cultural values and human principles. 'This is why the issue of balancing AI and ethics must be integrated into our broader discussions on economic empowerment and sustainability,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
