Using the hashtag 'People's Liberation Army hardcore songs', state media has launched at least three of the songs since April 20, all with video showing Beijing's military muscle – from submarines and aircraft to tanks – on Chinese social media platforms.
But not everyone is happy with the military makeover.

While the popular songs keep their original lyrics about children at play – such as rowing a boat, observing a bird returning from the south or riding to market – the accompanying folk or pop tunes have been set to rock music by unknown social media users using AI arranging applications.
The videos have gone viral on the social media accounts of state news agency Xinhua, People's Daily and China News Service, drawing more than 2 million views in a month for Xinhua's Weibo account alone.
The well-known lyrics, catchy melodies and promotion of patriotism are popular with Chinese who are seeing their country in an intensifying rivalry with the United States.
'I've listened to this song for half of my life. It's the first time it sounds so powerful. I feel so thrilled that China now has become a formidable power,' a user on social media Douyin commented following Xinhua's release of Let's Paddle Together.
The original song, from a 1955 movie, refers to children playing in rowing boats after school. However, in the new lyrics the wooden oars have been replaced by PLA Navy's destroyers and submarines cleaving ocean waves.

Ex-girlfriend who blackmailed K-pop idol with sex video gets suspended sentence
The former girlfriend of a 26-year-old South Korean pop star has been given a one-year suspended sentence for threatening to release a sex video of them together in a bid to end his career. The Seoul Eastern District Court sentenced the woman to one year in prison, suspended for two years, for her threats to the K-pop singer, who is still active in the scene. She was sentenced under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (coercion using video recordings) and for property damage, according to legal platform LawTalk News on Wednesday. The woman was also ordered to complete 40 hours of sexual violence counselling and barred from working at institutions involving children, teenagers and people with disabilities for four years. The woman had escalated threats to the singer and also damaged his phone during an argument. As the relationship started deteriorating, the woman began blackmailing her boyfriend with sex videos filmed during their time together. The 'Ita bag' hashtag went viral on Weibo – China's answer to X – in summer 2024 when Quan Hongchan, who won two golds in diving at the 2024 Paris Olympics, showed off gifts given to her by fans, from badges to cute toys, inside her transparent PVC bag. Advertisement An ita bag, which means 'painful bag' in Japanese, humorously denotes the great pain – and expense and effort – the wearer has put into lavishly decorating their bag. The bag is usually made of canvas or nylon with a clear see-through front. The trend stems from Japan's otaku subculture, which is defined by obsessive fans of interests such as video games, anime and manga. So invested were otaku in their interests that they would go through great lengths to seek out merchandise from their favourite titles or franchises and carry them inside a personalised bag.
