Mumbai Customs plans to cut international passenger clearance time from 10 minutes to 5

In a move that is likely to ease congestion, Mumbai Customs is working on a plan to reduce clearance time for international passengers from 10 minutes to 5 minutes by introducing automation and AI-based systems. 'We are developing a new system called CAPIT, in which we are trying to use AI and ML rather than rely on random checks or manual profiling. Earlier, we would mark bags with chalk or pen. Now, the system flags baggage electronically and connects it with the passenger profile internally,' Joseph Gouda, joint director, Indian Revenue Services (IRS), said. He was speaking at a panel discussion on 'Airport passenger infrastructure through innovation' held on Thursday here, ahead of the Inter Passenger Terminal Show (IPTS) 2025. The panel included members from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Mumbai Customs, terminal operations heads from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports, among others. India currently has over 2,200 aircraft on order and air traffic is projected to double over the next two decades. 'India's aviation growth presents a dual challenge—securing borders while easing the journey for millions of law-abiding passengers. In Mumbai alone, we clear 22,000–25,000 international travellers daily, averaging 10-minute Customs clearance. Our aim is to cut this to five minutes,' Gouda added. At Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), expected to begin operations soon, planning has focused on real-time digital tools and data-based terminal management. Vikram Falodiya, head of terminal operations, NMIA, said, 'At NMIA, we have the best use technology to manage passenger flow and airside operations, including rapid exit taxiway simulations for faster aircraft movement. Passenger experience is a priority. With surging passenger traffic, cities like Mumbai may need new airports by 2040. Despite the volume, our operational teams perform impressively, and Mumbai ranks high globally for efficiency.' The roundtable was a precursor to the upcoming IPTS 2025, which will be held on June 11-12 in Mumbai drawing over 3,000 participants from the aviation, infrastructure and regulatory sectors.

No more visa fee waivers: Kuwait imposes standard KD150 charge across all sectors

Photo: Pexels In a significant overhaul of its labour market framework, Kuwait has officially ended fee exemptions for work visa transfers, introducing a standard KD150 charge for each work permit issued across a wide range of sectors. The policy change was enacted under Ministerial Resolution No. 4 of 2025, announced on Thursday, June 6, by First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Fahd Al Youssef. The move marks a major shift in Kuwait's approach to labour regulation, aimed at tightening oversight and eliminating preferential treatment for specific industries. Key repeals and new requirements At the core of the change is the repeal of Article 2 of the 2024 resolution, which had previously allowed exemptions from work permit fees for certain sectors, depending on manpower requirements approved by the Public Authority for Manpower. With the exemption lifted, all work permits issued under previously exempted categories will now incur the KD150 fee, assessed on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, Article 5 of the 2024 resolution has been abolished, removing the requirement for the Public Authority for Manpower's Board of Directors to conduct a one-year impact assessment before implementing the fee structure. This eliminates the need for any further formal review or recommendation process. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo These adjustments also modify earlier provisions under Ministerial Resolution No. 3 of 2024, further streamlining the issuance and transfer of work permits and standardising related fees. Sectors now affected by the KD150 fee The newly standardised fee applies to a broad spectrum of public and private sector organisations, including: Government-owned companies Hospitals, clinics, and medical centres licensed by the Ministry of Health Private universities, colleges, and schools Foreign investors accredited by the Investment Promotion Authority Sports clubs and federations Public benefit associations, charities, endowments, labour unions, and cooperative societies Licensed agricultural operations, including hunting, livestock pens, sheep and camel grazing Commercial and investment properties Industrial facilities and small-scale industries Previously, these sectors were exempted from paying additional fees, contingent on staffing needs evaluated by the Public Authority for Manpower. A broader push for labour market standardisation The new fee structure is part of Kuwait's wider effort to unify labour regulations and eliminate inconsistencies across sectors. The KD150 fee will now apply uniformly to each work permit issued or transferred, regardless of sector or employer classification. By scrapping exemptions once granted to entities like hospitals, schools, agricultural operations, and charitable organisations, the government aims to close regulatory loopholes and ensure equal treatment in how foreign labour is managed. The repeal of Article 5, previously mandating a one-year impact study, also signals a move toward faster implementation of reforms without further delay or discretionary reviews, reinforcing a shift to more centralised and uniform oversight.

G7 summit: Mark Carney asked why PM Modi was invited; here's how the Canadian PM responded

NEW DELHI: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday presented his reasoning behind extending invitation for G7 summit to PM Narendra Modi. Highlighting India's economic prowess, he said that it "made sense" to have the fifth largest economy at the table. "There are certain countries that should be at the table for those discussions and in my capacity as G7 chair consultation with others some others make those determinations. India is the fifth largest economy in the world, effectively the most populous country in the world central to a number of those supply chains at the heart of number of those supply chains so it makes sense. And in addition, bilaterally, we have now agreed importantly to continued law enforcement to law enforcement dialogue so there's been some progress on that recognizes issues of accountability. I extended the invitation to uh Prime Minister Modi for in in that context and he has accepted," he said. "Well, first off there is a legal process that is literally underway and quite advanced in Canada and it's never appropriate to make comments in any respect with respect to those legal processes," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo PM Modi accepted the G7 invite and assured that India and Canada would "work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit." "Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit," he said. India's relations with Canada soured during Justin Trudeau's tenure, largely due to issues such as the activities of Khalistani separatists in Canada. The upcoming G7 summit, hosted by Canada from June 15 to 17, will bring together the world's leading industrialized nations — including France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Japan, the US, and Canada — along with the EU and global organizations like the IMF, World Bank, and UN. Leaders are expected to address major global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in West Asia.
