Jordan: JBA, Azeri ambassador explore economic cooperation
AMMAN: Chairman of Jordanian Businessmen Association Hamdi Tabbaa and Azerbaijani Ambassador Ildar Salimov on Tuesday discussed prospects for strengthening economic, investment and trade relations, highlighting the role of the private sector in driving mutual cooperation.
During the meeting, Tabbaa stressed the need to intensify business meetings between private sector representatives from both nations, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
He noted that the upcoming Arab Businessmen and Investors Conference with Central Asian Countries and Azerbaijan, set to take place in Abu Dhabi next week, will provide a platform to enhance economic ties and explore joint investment opportunities.
Tabbaa also highlighted the importance of expanding trade exchange and enhancing cooperation in key sectors such as energy, information technology and the green economy.
Salimov welcomed the association's participation in the conference, highlighting its role in attracting foreign investments and fostering economic partnerships.
The diplomat underscored the need to present promising investment opportunities and increase trade volume by enhancing cooperation between business communities in Jordan and Azerbaijan.
According to an official date, mutual trade exchange reached approximately $4 million in 2023, with Jordan's exports to Azerbaijan primarily consisting of pharmaceutical products, mineral and animal food preparations.

Jordan: ACI exports rise to $4bln in first five months of 2025
AMMAN — Amman exports rose to JD2.849 billion in the first five months of 2025, marking a 12.2 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2024, the Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI) said on Tuesday. The chamber's data indicated that most industrial sectors contributed to this increase, with the exception of the wood and furniture sector and the packaging, paper and office supplies sector, which declined by 14 per cent and 9.2 per cent, respectively, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Construction materials posted the "highest" sector in export growth, surging by 86.7 per cent year-on-year, while the engineering, electrical and ICT sector posted the "lowest" sectors in exports with 0.5 per cent. India, the US, Saudi Arabia and Iraq remained the "top" export destinations, collectively accounting for more than JD1.63 billion, over half of the chamber's total exports during the reporting period. Exports to India rose by 14.7 per cent to JD395 million, exports to Saudi Arabia increased by 7.2 per cent to JD352 million, while Iraq exports were up by 4.8 per cent to JD381 million, compared with the same period of 2024. Despite the US recorded a decline of 5.1 per cent during the January-May period of 2025, it remained the "leading" single-country destination for the ACI exports, registering JD507 million, down from JD534 million in the corresponding period of last year. ACI also reported an increase in exports to regional countries, where exports to Syria surged by over 300 per cent, reaching JD114 million, while exports to Palestine rose by 21 per cent to JD69 million. Arab countries topped the list of regional blocs receiving ACI's exports, with a total value of JD1.396 billion, while non-Arab Asian countries followed with JD566 million, and North America with JD528 million. The European Union accounted for JD148 million, African nations for JD82 million, non-EU European countries for JD79 million, South America for JD20 million and other countries for JD27 million. By sector, mining led with JD610 million in exports, followed by chemicals and cosmetics at JD532 million and engineering and electrical products at JD444 million. Exports of food, agricultural and livestock products reached JD417 million, medical and pharmaceutical products JD273 million, and garments and leather goods JD247 million. Other sectors included plastics and rubber with JD130 million, packaging and paper products with JD102 million, construction materials with JD87 million and wood and furniture with JD8 million. Founded in 1962, ACI currently represents around 8,600 industrial enterprises. Jordan: NEPCO reports 5.8% rise in purchased, sold electricity in 2024
AMMAN — The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) announced on Tuesday that it witnessed an increase of 5.8 per cent in terms of purchased and sold electricity between 2023 and 2024. The total volume of purchased electricity reached 22,723 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2024, marking an increase from 21,473GWh the previous year, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. This increase was driven by a 22.8 per cent surge in electricity from the Al Attarat oil shale project, a 7.5 per cent increase in renewable energy contributions, and a slight 0.2 per cent rise from conventional generation sources. Purchases from other sources, including the King Talal Dam and the Indo-Jordan Chemicals Company, decreased by 3.5 per cent, NEPCO said. Electricity sales climbed to 22,323GWh in 2024, an increase from 21,105GWh in 2023, with distribution companies accounting for a 5.5 per cent increase in sales. Sales to industrial consumers, including the extractive, transformative, and electric power sectors, rose by 7.2 per cent, while sales to other customers, such as the airport, state television, radio and others, grew by 2.8 per cent. NEPCO's report also noted a slight decrease of 0.9 per cent in electricity imports from Egypt, falling from 266.4 to 264.0 megawatt-hours. The figures also showed that exports surged by 32.6 per cent, reaching 265.8 megawatt-hours. Jordan: SunExpress launches direct Amman-Antalya flights
AMMAN — The Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) on Wednesday welcomed the arrival of SunExpress Airlines' inaugural flight, marking the launch of four weekly direct routes between Amman and Antalya. The flight was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute, attended by representatives from Airport International Group (AIG), the airline's general sales agent in Jordan (Alpha International), and ground handling partner Menzies, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The arrival of this low-cost carrier is part of AIG's strategy to expand and diversify the portfolio of airlines operating at QAIA, boosting the Kingdom's regional air connectivity.
