Gary Neville's touching message to 'emotional' David Beckham after knighthood
Best pal Gary Neville has paid tribute to David Beckham after the football legend was awarded a knighthood early this week following years of speculation
Gary Neville has paid tribute to close pal Sir David Beckham after he finally received a knighthood in the king's birthday honours' list.
Emotional Beckham, 50, had been talked up as deserving of the gong for several years and found out last week that he was to be awarded.
And Neville, who became the best of friends with Beckham during their time at Manchester United and served as best man at the high-profile wedding to Posh Spice, said in a post on social media: "Wow, Sir David Beckham! Congratulations mate. You deserve it and I'm so happy for you. Take time to reflect on everything you've done in an incredible 50 years!"
Beckham spoke about the award before last night's FIFA Club World Cup opener between Inter Miami, the MLS team he co-owns, and Al Ahly.
And while the game was a scoreless stinker, Beckham was light-heartedly asked by broadcaster DAZN if he had a chance to update his passport to include his new title.
'No, definitely not, I haven't,' Beckham said. 'It's been an emotional week I must admit. For me and for my family. It's obviously very special. It's a huge honour, but one that has been shared with myself and my family and so, it's been emotional.'
The Club World Cup continues on Sunday with European champions Paris Saint-Germain facing Atletico Madrid in the pick of the fixtures.
Two Premier League teams will feature. Chelsea get their campaign underway on Monday evening against Los Angeles FC, who have Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris in their ranks, while Manchester City meet Morocco's most successful team, Wydad Casablanca, on Wednesday afternoon.
The competition runs to July 13 with the winners set to pocket almost £100m from a total prize fund worth £775m - a huge financial reward despite the tournament being heavily criticised by some players and many supporters.

‘I'm waiting to kill them' – Man City star Cherki fires chilling warning to Man Utd as ex-Lyon ace seeks vengeance
RAYAN CHERKI has arrived in Manchester with a score to settle – and says he wants to 'kill' United. The £30.4million City new boy was part of the Lyon team who were dramatically beaten at Old Trafford in the Europa League quarter finals. The French international, 21, was even snapped goading the home fans by rubbing his groin after scoring in extra time that night. So when the Prem fixtures for next season are released later this week, there is only one fixture he will be looking for. Cherki said: 'I didn't like it when Manchester United won the game against Lyon because I am a Lyon fan. 'Now I am waiting for the game to kill them. I just wanted to go to Manchester City.' Cherki was regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford during his early years – after making his Lyon debut at 16. But their stunning comeback in April – capped by Harry Maguire's 120th-minute winner – ended Cherki's hopes of signing off from his boyhood club with a trophy. Yet he hopes he can make up for that by winning the lot on the blue side of Manchester in the coming years. He was sold a vision by Pep Guardiola which convinced him he was making the right move. Cherki added: 'When I spoke with Pep and he wanted me - he was very, very clear. That the system, the club, the city is very good. 'I want to win and I think City wants to win it all. For me that's better.' Jack Grealish has gone from eye-catching showman and heartthrob to miserable bench warmer - and I know who's to blame

Man Utd target Bryan Mbeumo makes Thomas Frank claim amid Spurs transfer battle
Manchester United target Bryan Mbeumo is also wanted by Tottenham now that Thomas Frank is in charge and the Cameroon star feels his ex-Brentford boss will thrive at his new club Bryan Mbeumo has tipped Thomas Frank to be a huge hit at Tottenham during an impromptu interview at the Canadian Grand Prix - but he did not discuss the battle for his signature between Spurs and Manchester United. The Cameroon star, 25, is wanted by both clubs with a summer exit from Brentford now likely. It's understood that United is Mbeumo's preferred destination with the Red Devils in desperate need of reinforcements after enduring their worst ever Premier League campaign. They have so far failed to meet Brentford's valuation of the player and the situation has been complicated by Frank's move to Spurs. Mirror Football revealed prior to the weekend that they have launched a £70million bid to try and make Mbeumo their marquee summer signing by gazumping their rivals. And while Mbeumo did not discuss interest from the two clubs in Montreal, he did endorse Frank to do a stellar job at his new club. "He's done so much for me," Mbeumo told Sky Sports when he was asked how influential Frank has been during his career. "He literally trusted me from the start [at Brentford] and he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player so much as well. I can only wish him all the best and I'm sure he's going to do well." He added: "He knows everything; he's really smart and knows what he wants to bring the team, how he wants them to play. He's been fantastic for Brentford." Mbeumo is hot property after breaking the 20-goal barrier in the Premier League for the first time last season, helping Brentford to a 10th place finish. Crucially, the Bees are not expected to prevent their star man after his stellar campaign, though it remains unclear where he will end up with the summer transfer window set to reopen on Monday. The versatile forward feels he is currently at the peak of his powers, adding: "I think it's been my best season so far in the Premier League. Even collectively, I think we played very good and were unlucky [to not get] a European spot." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. INSIDE SPORT: Food and drink prices at Club World Cup revealed after Inter Miami's tournament opener - as event chiefs get a glimpse of Donald Trump's immigration crackdown
A nice touch at the European Clubs Association executive committee meeting in Miami on Friday. Outgoing Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain brought along his replacement, Hugo Viana and introduced the Portuguese to those present. FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom delivered a presentation to the group, which included a video message from City's Erling Haaland along the lines of how much he was looking forward to taking part in the Club World Cup. The presentation also highlighted the sponsorship deals FIFA has secured with big-hitters including Bank of America and Michelob for the event, although insiders disclosed that there was no mention of ticket sales, which appeared to be the elephant in the room at the oceanside Grand Beach Hotel. Jason Gannon, Chelsea president and chief operating officer, also attended. FIFA officials were given a first-hand glimpse of Donald Trump 's immigration crackdown when a boat trip hosted by Telemundo to mark a year to go to the World Cup was the subject of a US Coast Guard raid. The mayor of Miam-Dade Daniella Levine Cava and a host of special guests of the American Spanish-language broadcaster, in smart dresses and suits, were on a luxury catamaran when it was unceremoniously stopped in the middle of the waters off Biscayne Bay while Coast Guard officers came onboard to check papers and carry put a search. Reports claim the inspection lasted for an hour, leading Telemundo to cancel the event and return to shore. There was no expense spared when FOX hosted their own year-to-go party on South Beach. FIFA chief Gianni Infantino joined VIPs for a show which included a performance from 'Tipsy' rapper Shaboozey and a spectacular drone show, with the devices lining up to spell out the names of Club World Cup sponsors. While the tickets may have ended up heavily reduced, as FIFA successfully scrambled to fill the stands at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium for the tournament opener, the same could not be said of the food and drink. A can of Heineken at the Inter Miami versus Al Ahly stalemate cost no less than $14 (£10.32) while a chicken bowl came in at $22.50 (£16.59). A goalless draw may not have been on FIFA's menu, but officials may well have breathed a sigh of relief at the attendance for the first match. The official figure of 60,927 appeared generous, but fears of half empty stands were averted on a balmy night in South Florida. Organisers will also be pleased that there was no repeat of the chaotic scenes a year ago at the same stadium when ticketless fans tried to storm their way into the Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia. A ring of steel consisting of police checkpoints ensured that only those with tickets were allowed anywhere near the venue. Ref cam was a positive addition, with those watching on TV given an up close view of what Aussie whistleblower Alireza Faghani saw when he gave a first-half penalty. The Football Supporters' Association has thrown its weight behind the National League's '3UP' campaign. The scandalous situation, which sees only two clubs promoted into League Two, continues, and it is to be hoped that backing from the fans can heap pressure on the EFL. This season, York City finished 13 points clear of third place with 96 points but were thrashed 3-0 at home by Oldham Athletic, who went on to win the play-off final, and missed out on promotion. Change is needed, urgently. British Olympic Association chiefs were amongst the first to get an audience with new IOC president Kirsty Coventry in Lausanne last week. With Coventry set to take the reins from current IOC president Thomas Bach, the delegation met with both the ongoing and incoming president to discuss the future of the Olympic movement. It was also BOA chairperson Katherine Grainger's first formal engagement with the IOC, as both her, chief executive Andy Anson and chief operating officer Shahab Uddin took an early opportunity to solidify relations between the UK and the IOC. Signatures are now being sought to reach the requisite 180 for an MCC special general meeting to try to establish 'Lord's plc.' A group of members want the 238-year-old club to become a public limited company, with each subsequently becoming the proud owner of a share those involve estimate would be worth £50-100,000. Should the magic 180 figure be reached, a two-thirds majority would then be needed to change the rules.
